I have a confession.
Typically and I'm not sure why it is usually the case. The name that I prefer to call the plant is usually one of the least commonly referred to names for the plant. Which makes it a little more difficult to talk about them.
But I think the term crown pink is a better name than the scientific term that is used more commonly
Jupiter's beard sounds a lot better than red Valerian when it turns out that plant isn't related to Valerian at all.
Crimson Bergamont?
It's not Bergamont it's just crimson.
It turns out it's actually scarlet monarda.

In the nursery industry, we dont use commom names whenever possible.  Not only because theyre confusing, but also because they arent even consistent. They mean different things depending on where you are in the country.

We only use common names when the botanical name is too hard to pronounce. Fernbush rather than chamaebatiaria for example.

Monarda is the genus of bee balm.  No fucking clue why some old people call it bergamot.

A mum is a type of chrysanthemum but all chysanthemums get called daisys, except that the only real daisys arent even chrysanthemums, theyre leucanthemums.

Its fucking annoying bud.  The deeper you go, the more annoying it gets.

It's really confusing a lot of people that's for sure.
What's your favorite bad name for a plant?

Sage.

Waaaaay too many plants people will call sage.  Just the salvia nemorosa sub species aka meadow sages pise me off.  Some "master gardener" will look me in the eye and ask for "purple sage".

Bitch do you know how many fucking salvias have purple flowers?

Of course she means "may night" salvia nemorosa which is by far the most boring meadow sage.

Or "red hot poker".  What a dumb fucking name.  Especially when it has such a cool botanical name "kniphofia".

If anyone calls themselves a "master gardener" in my presence, i will challenge them immediately to a fight to the death with hori hori's.

Oh, so you mastered in a six week class what has continually humbled me for 30 years? Fuck you. I hate "master gardeners."

As someone with technically four different salvia's growing in my garden I understand this answer and was very happy with it.

Not a huge salvia nemorosa fan..  more of a salvia gregii or darcyii boi. When it goes down to it though, artemesia genus should be the only things we call Sages, but even then there's probably thousands of them.
