Remember DOGE and their obsession with social security databases? Elon claiming that 150 year olds were getting social security checks? Well, we finally have a really good idea what that was about.

There is a database maintained by the SSA called the “Death Master File” that is used to keep track of every social security account that belongs to a person who has died. This database exists so dead people don’t get paid benefits, and more importantly so financial institutions know whether accounts are being opened or accessed in the name of someone who is dead. If this database says a person is dead, they cannot access the financial system. When an alive person get marked as dead in the database, their accounts are automatically frozen. If this happens to you, you have to present yourself at a social security office and prove your identity and that you are not dead. It can take weeks or months to regain access to your accounts.

When the SSA is notified or discovers a death, the date of death is entered and you become a former person in the eyes of the government. Because of the consequences of losing access to banking accounts are so severe, date death must be confirmed before being added to the database. (There are other ways to mark someone as dead if the death date is not known. Once a person reaches the age of 100 and is still receiving benefits, the SSA actively investigates whether that person is actually still alive. If they cannot find proof of life, their account is flagged as dead, but the important detail is that if their date of death is not known, they don’t go into the death master file. This is what Elon failed to understand and why he thought there were people who would be 150 years old receiving benefits.

Now, what was going on behind the scenes was a lot more sinister than just a know nothing like Elon posting misinformation. Managers were handed a list of 6000 accounts of suspected dead people and told to put them in the death master file using a made up death date. Some managers refused after seeking legal advice, but in the end, the 6000 suspect accounts were killed off. Hundreds of people lost access to their bank and credit cards, loans were foreclosed.

Weeks later, homeland security officials came to the SSA with list of 2.7 million accounts that needed the same treatment. Some folks noticed that most the names were Hispanic. They pushed back and were told these were illegals immigrants and terrorists with illegal Social security numbers. SSA was very skeptical of the accuracy of these accusation, and in the end was permitted to investigate a random sample. Almost all were citizens or legal immigrants, some were children. Remember that this is a file for keeping track of dead people, so using it for immigration purposes by entering fake information is not legal.

After a bunch of back and forth DHS officials admitted the plan was to force these people to come to SSA offices where ICE agents would be waiting for them, or make their lives in the US impossible so they would self deport.

In the end that scheme was scuttled, but holy shit people need to go to prison
