Blue Psilocybe ochraceocentrata Grow Log * 6
    #29544571 -

This is my first time working with spores; I received them as a part of a grow along. I was a bit late to start, so now I'm playing catch up. These ochras have a phenotype where the caps are blue, so we'll see if the spores want that to happen. I've had a huge want to grow these ever since I saw some pictures of this specific pheno. I got a raise at work, so I got an FFU (one that was recommended on the FFU forum here, thank you for that thread) after a while of using an SAB, which has myco work so much easier AND more enjoyable. It's a luxury for sure, but I'm not procrastinating on as much as I was before. I still have a lot to learn, and I'm using this project to help me learn more.

I've been spending a lot of time doing a lot of agar work before actually growing. I would get cultures, and practice transferring them. My biggest issue is how little energy I have, so a lot of my plates end up getting overcolonized. I'm trying to fight that, but it's not been successful so far

Anyways, here's the actual growing part:

Planning to run these in 20qt tubs with a 1:4 ratio if all goes well.

A lot of pictures are missing because I didn't think to log this until later on, oops. I'll try to go back and see if I took more pictures and add them later.

3/11
Swabbed 3 plates, dunked the swab in one plate.

3/23
2 plates germinated, one contaminated. I dunked the swab in while being careless, the spores themselves were super clean.

3/27
Took transfers from each plate from the first areas that germinated. I'll be running each of these cultures in different tubs, tracking which has phenos I like, and go from there.

3/28
Had a third plate start to germinate, planning to run this one anyways.

4/1
Had some spores germinate *through* bacteria on the one contaminated plate. Considering trying to do some transfers to isolate that growth. Made a transfer from the slower plate.
(Got over the culture being gross, going to keep photo here for the sake of it)

Some good looking growth on the transfers.

4/10/26
oops, thought I had some more time to wait before grain. Full plates. Will be making a transfer of each sample before putting each into grain.

More recent plate. Second guessing if I want to continue this specific culture, I'll be watching how growth goes over the next few days.

Great photos! :yesnod:

Indeed, agar plates can be "overgrown" quite easily since they are so small, but its great practice for doing transfers and working "clean" around spores and living mycelium. :cool2:

Decided to grab some more photos today

Prepped some grain, I've been using this no prep millet tek. I'm using 150ml water instead of 175ml, but I might return it to 175ml depending on how I keep improving clumping. I was having annoying clumping issues, but a trivet managed to fix it entirely. I've been testing if gypsum makes an impact on breaking it up, I haven't noticed anything yet. I'll be making transfers of all three cultures tomorrow.

Aaaand here's the gross culture. I decided to go ahead and upload the image I took of it when I first noticed mycelium overtaking bacteria. Now the mycelium is turning blue where it first germinated, and is now growing over the bacteria.

Thank you! I'm still digging around to try and find more pictures, I found a couple more.

It's really been great practice  Since I started this culture, I've swabbed some more spores onto plates. It's been fun working with spores, and it has been a much greater learning experience than working with cleaned up cultures.

Real life got in the way of plans, so I didn't do this as soon as I wanted. Gotta catch up on things tomorrow, just wanted to do a quick update.

Transfers made

Agar to grain. Partner opened the door without knocking in the middle of me working with sample two (door does not lock), so I'm not confident with that one. Only time will tell.

I never explicitly stated this, but my goals for this project are to consistently produce a blue-capped phenotype and to get people access to these genetics once that happens. I'm hoping that grabbing transfers from different germinated spores will increase my odds. The grows I've seen from this so far only have a small handful of blue caps in each flush. I've seen a lot of light brown and yellow caps, some green. They normally seem to be brown, then shift to blue while they're maturing.

Blue caps huh… are they blue like the albino penis envy from pin or do they change blue with age?

that wouldn’t surprise me all the agar plates. I have turned blue after about two weeks.

Change blue with age, like turn a veryyy dark blue. The pins start off as a light brown, become lighter as they grow, then shift blue before veils break and before spore drop. Though, some people seem to have them blue right after pinning. I've not seen many people isolate a stable phenotype, but they're super gorgeous. I've seen people get a small handful of blue caps while starting to spores, and that's about where my expectations are for the F1s. That's also why I'm planning to run three tubs at once to maximize chances. I still have a second spore swab if it ends up not working. I would reaaally love to spread the genetics around if I am able to get something stable.

Those plates look super cool, what are they?

Oh thats common…. Keep the spores off them and they all turn blue

The plates are ochraceocentrata as well as the photo below

Not my picture (will probably delete it since I don't have a proper way to credit), but this is what some people have been growing them to look like. This batch the person grew started bluing really early on. It's a very saturated color

And some other ones from another grower

I mainly have been interested in growing ochras, so this was just more motivation for me to work with them honestly. May or may not be worth it in the end  If it doesn't that just means I could just work on growing traditional ochras or black cap

Samples 1, 2 and 3. I should've put more agar in, I was a bit too conservative with it.

Shook the sample 3 jars on 4/20 (blaze it) because I definitely didn't put enough agar in there. Recovered pretty strongly in 24 hours.

When I can get a stable phenotype, ideally! If I get a really blue batch out of any of these, then I'll be trying to give away the genetics as soon as that. If it needs more work, it'll be some extra time.

Good news, jars are fully colonized. Bad news, didn't have time to take pics. I ran out of coir today so I'm waiting for more to arrive. Will spawn them when the coir arrives.

Whew I really haven't updated this in a while, sorry, everyone! Haven't given up, just haven't been working on anything new.

Quick summary just to get the ball rolling:
  • Spawned them all to bulk on 5/15
  • One set of the jars was super bacterial (sample 3), still ran it anyways
  • The two healthy tubs fully colonized by 5/30
  • Pins on 6/9 (nice) for sample 1, sample 2 overlaying like crazy, sample 3 attempting to colonize the surface

6/12
They're growin! One cap is showing a bit of blue thus far. Fuckers really wanted to grow towards my window

Figured out where my bacterial issues came from in the mean time. I was doing no prep millet, didn't wash it, so I needed to pressure cook it higher and/or longer (bacterial issues stopped after I did both of those things for new grain). Sample 2 is overlaying in the tub and on the plate, so I might not run that one anymore. Sample 1 didn't have aggressive overlay in comparison. I'll be running these again, but adding larger drill holes in the next tubs next time.

Lots of errors in the process, but I'm still learning as I go

We're getting more blue! They're still all growing a lot by the day. That big one could be a good clone candidate, but that other large one in the background is also blueing. More of the caps are showing blue. I've seen most people get more aggressive blue caps on the second flush, so I am happy to see them start out on first flush. Some of them are putting out toque-like mutations that I've seen a few other people get.

Some spores dropped during work. Some are more blue than others, some are still growing. A few clone contenders, but none I'm super sold on yet.

Clone contender 1. I like the blueing on the cap, but it's not a cluster. Pretty big fruit.

Clone contender 2. Can't get a great pic of this one, I'll try and grab a better one when I harvest it. It's a small cluster, but a bigger fruit that started blueing very early on. Not as much blue as the previous one.

Second flush might have better clone fodder. Some of these are looking like green caps, so I'm going to be targeting ones that blue the most and the quickest. With how much this flush is looking like green cap ochras, I may not even mess with any of these yet for clones.

Some other pics

Still hopeful. I do like this batch the most of the three so far. It's not overlaying aggressively like #2, and it's been the quickest.

oops, all spores!

Work drained me bad and didn't have energy for harvesting. Gonna clean em off and get some good pics.

My favorites of the bunch. Gonna grab a couple clones and then dehydrate them.

Clone 1:

Big fruit, earliest to start blueing

Clone 2:

Most intense blueing, started getting saturated early on.

Both clones blued significantly before spore drop

original SW plates have now pinned (maybe I'll get pics if I remember)

The home strain of ochres I've been growing for a bit now suddenly popped the blue cap mutation themselves! I've been working with the same genetics for a bit now, was super surprised to see dark blue caps on the older ones. It must be a "common" mutation if multiple people get it randomly yeah? I ran here to ask about it since I've never had a strain mutate in appearance before. Do the stems of yours have an unusual shape too? Mine get bulbous as it nears the cap and then gets thin again at the connection, with the cap also being wavy

I’m kind of wondering if your blue strain that you believe you have is just part of the ochra trate  ?
Probably 40% of what I have cultivated out of this run has been blue

The difference in color, I believe pertains to the difference in potency that I’ve noticed between mushrooms of the same culture
Sometimes 1 g is just an average trip and other times it’s about the most I’ve ever had

I’ve run several ochras and none of them have turned blue. Some lineages are more prone to it, just a phenotype expression. Hence why they have black cap, green cap, blue cap….just downselecting for the phenotype.

You probably knew this but sharing for others!
