Hydro-Pod newbie grow log

Here are two photos of newly birthed B+ PF style cakes sitting in a friend's Hydro-Pod unit. I will try to post updates to the thread as any negative or positive progress is made. Any suggestions or observations highly welcomed and will be relayed to her. I should start with a disclaimer that this is her first cultivating experience so the results of the first batch is probably highly subject to many newbie variables that the Hydro-Pod couldn't possibly compensate for. =) These jars were also very slow to fully colonize compared to a batch she currently has colonizing from a different vendor. So she may very well have a badly isolated strain or perhaps the substrate mixture wasn't quite balanced. These jars were birthed on 8/30/01. They were not dunked or cold shocked rather the vermiculate scraped off and the cakes placed immediately into the terrarium. She filled the Pod with bottled water (expensive!) because she wasn't sure if the traces of chlorine in tap water would be healthy or not especially considering the fact that it is being wicked up into the cakes as can be shown by the glossy geolite rocks. I gave her a digital Hygrometer that she had sitting inside the unit but the humidity was so high that the unit simply stopped producing a percentage reading and just said "hi". I'll have to check the owners manual and see what the readable range is on this sucker. Kinda pisses me off as I paid a nice chunk of money for it to just tell us, "oh it's pretty darn humid in there". But I digress.... More later.. thedm

Yes it is all true what McMan says regarding the spores.. Ralphster's spores are colonizing so quickly even in lower temperatures that she's afraid that the cakes will be ready before the 3rd flush has ended on the cakes in the POD. Thanks for the information regarding the Hygrometer!

I was wondering what you consider "slow" in colonizing those pint jars in the pod? From what i can see the growth on those cakes look pretty strong.
Tell me something good then I might agree with you..

It took just under a month (28 days) for the jars to colonize in a styro incubation chamber maintaining 82-86F temperature. That seemed a bit excessive based upon what I have read. The new cakes I have going now seem on track for complete colonization in about 15 days.

Thats about right and even fairly good for pint jars. Your looking at 15 days for this new batch? thats excellent. You using filter disks this time? What are you using for substrate?

Whada fuck is "tomentose" McMan? While you may be the Stephen Hawking of Shrooms Im Buckwheat...lol Seriously though "what are optimum conditions for pint jars?" I was told to allow at least 21days to a month and thats what it took about 1 month.

Well I didn't expect to be posting for another couple of days but amazingly enough there has been major changes just overnight. The cakes are starting to become very fuzzy and cotton-like at the tops. I almost missed it but was shocked to find a single pin on the side of one of the cakes. The cakes themselves are starting to become more bumpy in appearance with the fuzzy material having pronounced peaks and valleys in various areas. thedm

Hmmmmmmm food for thought... Considering the temps fluctuate between 75 and 100 in the summer here no freakin wonder it takes a month. I should figure a way to control the incubation environment if I wanna get optimum results huh? Thanks for taking the time McMan I appreciate it.

McMan, quote from your link: " If one were to inoculate seven jars of prepared substrate with the same spore syringe, the result would be seven completely different by-strains that will be independent of each other and will each show characteristics that vary from one jar to the next. " In fact one doesn?t get 7 strains but many more, since in every jar many strains are formed. That?s showed by the fast that you can have fertile and sterile fruits(in this case 2 distinct different strains) from the same cake.

The substrate used is just plain brown rice flour, vermiculite and bottled water ala PF tek. I have filter disks laying around somewhere but these jars are colonizing without them -- they just have the 4 holes poked in the top and seem to be doing really good.
