Looks good.. Only thing I can think of to improve is to have that hose from the humidifier running all the way across the top of the tank and putting some small holes facing down every 6 inches or so.

that's a good idea. If my friend does that should he seal the end of the tube with silicone glue or just leave it open?

I don't think you need to run the holes with the tube, the transported air will disperse naturally with whatever goodness it carries. But if you constrain it to a tube with little small holes, that creates resistance and the pump won't pumpas much air. So I wouldn't run the tube along the top with the holes.

very nice!
and yes, you dont want any low points in that humidifier hose where water could collect and block the vapor.

I was just thinking of the air entrainment thing Mcman is always talking about. I have it kind of like that on my terrarium. (A 5 level shelf covered in plastic, there is a garden hose running across the top with holes underneath) it works very well.

Nice, big terrarium. If I got it right, it uses 3 means of humidification: perlite, vaporizer and the bubbler, and 2 means of airation: vaporizer and bubbler.
A little overkill if you ask me.
Perlite only and ocasional fanning should work well, or the vaporizer, or perlite and the bubbler.
Read what Shroomgod has to say on humidification:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Creek/3715/HumidifierTekv1.1.html
Take into account that when you have cakes in the terrarium, the temperature and humidity will go up a little, so it has no sense trying to trim the setup now to exactly the point it should have later.

My friend mainly wanted the bubbler for airation, because he heard that an ultrasonic humidifier doesn't offer the best gas exchange, and he constantly wanted air to be moving even when the humidifier was off. He figured he'd put it in some water to add to the humidity. He put the perlite on the bottom because he didn't wanna clean up any water that accumulated on the bottom and figured that with the perlite there it would just soak up and add to the humidity. What do you think hes should do? He wants to keep it as automated as he can. so he can leave it alone some of the time.

Would he have to fan with perlite and the bubbler? The tank was for an iguana I don't know if its water tight. When my friend washed it out it held the water pretty well, but he didn't have it in there for a long period of time. Would the perlite really work better than the humidifier? Are you telling me my friend wasted all that money?

yep you did. perlite and fanning twice a day will do as good/better than a humidifier. and with that pump running 24/7 youll probably only need to fan once a day or every 2 days. looks good except for the $60 you spent on that humidifier that you coulda sent me out of the kindness of your heart instead of wasting it on the humidifier.

My friend is having some trouble keeping the humidity up. He doesn't think his hygrometers are accurate and wanted to know what you thought the humidity looked like. The sides of his tank aren't "sweating" like the pictures he has seen of other tanks, so he doesn't think it is high enough. Is the sweating good or bad? The perlite has no wtater on it as of now. He's just using the humidifier and the bubbler. The digi hygrometer says 86%rh and as far as he can tell the analog one says approximatly the same.

That's more humid than I've ever seen a terrarium. I started with an ultrsonic humidifier and found that it produced too much humidity. It takes a very nice hygrometer to measure accurately at high humidity, I would guess that your friends set-up is close to 100% humidity, much too high. I definately agree that you should use perlite for humidification. I've got a friend who uses a bubbler for air exchange and has had no problems. To keep the air clean he made a hepa filter set-up for his air pump, a very good idea in my opinion. He has had the same cake throwing off shrooms for six weeks with no contamination. I would also advise your freind to come up with a better top, other than saran wrap. He will find that it will get very messy to work with. A sheet of glass would work better and is pretty cheep, he can order it to size and have the edges ground for smoothness.

I'm not retarded, I can read my friends hyrgrometer. It said 86%rh and I think it said 67 degrees. On his scale the rh come first. Whats wierd is that the humidifier was turned off last night at about 2 in the morning and he checked on it now 2:30 in the afternoon and it says 88%rh. whats that all about? After he tunred the humidifier off, the "fog" wasn't visible it just looked clear. Does that mean the humidity went out? he mist was gona real fast?

My friend set it up left the humidifier on for over an hour (he thnk he wasn't exactly timing just seeing if everythin was working) He actually just putmore perlite in the tank today. What should he do? Is that 88% 69degree good enough for cakes?

I dont have a lot of faith in perlite alone either. I have seem some terariums that tried perlite alone, only to be forced to add a bubbler later. It might have something to do with the size of the tanks. Perhaps the perlite alone would do the job if it was say 3 inches or more deep in such a large tank. (Say, what size is that aquraium anyway? Is it a 55 gallon long?)

I'm not sure how many gallons, but it's four feet long, 16 inches wide, and 16.5 inches tall.

My friend messed with his setup slightly. cut the tube form the humidifier and propped it up so it doesn't clog like STAL suggested. added more perlite. Then left the humidifier on for hours so that the perlite would stop soaking up the moisture from the air. All seems to be going well. He finally sees some condensation on the sides like he's seen in so many other pictures. He hasn't set the timer as he doesn't know what to set it to. He just checks on it ocasionally and turns the humidifier on when he thinks the humidity dropped. He takes notes so eventually he can get it set and fully automated. Here are some updated pictures.
If you want to see his jars and whatever shrooms he has so far look here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=456636&page=&view=&sb=&o=&fpart=all&vc=1 forty thanks for tellin me how to make my links clickable.
