fish tank heater
    #445282 - 11/03/01 01:08 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I'm finally going to get a fish tank heater tommorow. I want one that I can use to heat a incubation box to 85-86 degrees. What should I look for? The extent of my knowldge so far goes that I should walk into the store, ask for a fish tank heater that is thermostatically controled (will stop heating when warm and start again when colder) and one that is submergable. Advice?

Im also thinking about getting a 100w HEater But how effictive is this In your incubator I dont see how it makes the whole thing warm because only the water Is at 85 no the surrounding :)

what is 85 F In Celsius (spelling)

85 is about 29+ or so.

The water gets hot. The hot water will give off warmth. I'm sure the water gets hotter than 85 degrees but its the surrounding air your worried about.

my 50w heater gets a couple gallons of water to 96 degrees F. If you're sitting your jars in the water, the heated water should distribute itself all around. If you're using tubing and a pump, the heat will be transfered through the tubing inside the incubator (heating the air and keeping it fairly warm inside)
I think 85F=30C.

It is VERY worth getting a quality heater, Ebo Jagger is the way to go..

make sure your heater is completely submersed and the water flow is sufficient..

How many watts should I get? I'm looking towards a 50 or 75 watt heater?

How many gallons?
50 should be enough.. 100 if its alot of water..
www.bigalsonline.com has great prices
you can also get a good water pump to distribute the water in your incubator, depending your design ( personally I think you need something more than what is shown in the previous link posted.. but its a middiling concern)

I think the main problem with heating sources like a blow dryer is that it is dry air. If anything, it will dry your substrate and work against your colonization times. Also, the point of a fish tank heater system is so that it is trouble free. You can leave it on for a couple days without having to poke at it every 20 minutes.

there are several different approaches you can take.. depending on how complex you choose to go..
the most simple is with two of the same size rubbermaid containers stacked (not all will work like this) and with the area between the two filled with water.. the heater fitted with the temp adjustment sticking out..
or a plastic container with the heater in it in the middle of your container..
or a heated reservoir with water pumped through a radiator (copper tube or simmilar).. at the bottom of your container..

No lid on the jug? It looks like i'll be going with a 50 watt submergable heater in a glass pickle jar in the middle of my cooler. Any ideas on setting up the apporiate heat?

By the way, I received the filter disc on tuesday. They look very good. I havent put them to use yet. If I always notice my tape gets wet when PCing even with foil over the top will this effect the use of filter discs?

I plan to crank it up without any jars near. Measure the tempurature at different areas and then turn it down 1/4 of the way and then measure it again. Then i'll make an educated guess from there.

I got a 8" 50W aquarium heater for $13.99 CAD + tax = $15 CAD. It is not submergable as I didnt not want to pay twice that value for one that was. The submergable one had a tempurature control on it but that had nothing to do with the surrounding air (only the water). I have it sitting in my stryafoam cooler heating up. Right now it is a little under 80 in the corner. The jug is in the middle. I had a few problems with the size of the heater and jug as I could not put the lid onto my cooler. I will be looking for something bigger tommorow as my plans were to turn this cooler i'm using now into a terrarium.

Anyone know if it would be possible to pull the temperature guage from an aquarium heater and move it out of the water so that it would heat until the air was the correct temperature? If anyone has tried this or has a heater to sacrifice, let me know if it works.
