Hydro-Pod newbie grow log
    #383595 - 09/01/01 10:12 PM (23 years, 16 days ago)

Here are two photos of newly birthed B+ PF style cakes sitting in a friend's Hydro-Pod unit. I will try to post updates to the thread as any negative or positive progress is made. Any suggestions or observations highly welcomed and will be relayed to her.

I should start with a disclaimer that this is her first cultivating experience so the results of the first batch is probably highly subject to many newbie variables that the Hydro-Pod couldn't possibly compensate for. =) These jars were also very slow to fully colonize compared to a batch she currently has colonizing from a different vendor. So she may very well have a badly isolated strain or perhaps the substrate mixture wasn't quite balanced.

These jars were birthed on 8/30/01. They were not dunked or cold shocked rather the vermiculate scraped off and the cakes placed immediately into the terrarium. She filled the Pod with bottled water (expensive!) because she wasn't sure if the traces of chlorine in tap water would be healthy or not especially considering the fact that it is being wicked up into the cakes as can be shown by the glossy geolite rocks.

I gave her a digital Hygrometer that she had sitting inside the unit but the humidity was so high that the unit simply stopped producing a percentage reading and just said "hi". I'll have to check the owners manual and see what the readable range is on this sucker. Kinda pisses me off as I paid a nice chunk of money for it to just tell us, "oh it's pretty darn humid in there". But I digress....

More later..

Yes it is all true what McMan says regarding the spores..

Ralphster's spores are colonizing so quickly even in lower temperatures that she's afraid that the cakes will be ready before the 3rd flush has ended on the cakes in the POD.

Thanks for the information regarding the Hygrometer!

I was wondering what you consider "slow" in colonizing those pint jars in the pod? From what i can see the growth on those cakes look pretty strong.

It took just under a month (28 days) for the jars to colonize in a styro incubation chamber maintaining 82-86F temperature.

That seemed a bit excessive based upon what I have read. The new cakes I have going now seem on track for complete colonization in about 15 days.

Thats about right and even fairly good for pint jars. Your looking at 15 days for this new batch? thats excellent. You using filter disks this time? What are you using for substrate?

Seriously though "what are optimum conditions for pint jars?" I was told to allow at least 21days to a month and thats what it took about 1 month.

Well I didn't expect to be posting for another couple of days but amazingly enough there has been major changes just overnight.

The cakes are starting to become very fuzzy and cotton-like at the tops. I almost missed it but was shocked to find a single pin on the side of one of the cakes.

The cakes themselves are starting to become more bumpy in appearance with the fuzzy material having pronounced peaks and valleys in various areas.

Hmmmmmmm food for thought...
Considering the temps fluctuate between 75 and 100 in the summer here no freakin wonder it takes a month. I should figure a way to control the incubation environment if I wanna get optimum results huh? Thanks for taking the time McMan I appreciate it.

McMan, quote from your link:
" If one were to inoculate seven jars of prepared substrate with the same spore syringe, the result would be seven completely different by-strains that will be independent of each other and will each show characteristics that vary from one jar to the next. "

In fact one doesn?t get 7 strains but many more, since in every jar many strains are formed.
That?s showed by the fast that you can have fertile and sterile fruits(in this case 2 distinct different strains) from the same cake.

The substrate used is just plain brown rice flour, vermiculite and bottled water ala PF tek.

I have filter disks laying around somewhere but these jars are colonizing without them -- they just have the 4 holes poked in the top and seem to be doing really good.

For your substrate you said you used BRF and verm.
(Bye the way those cakes look nice to me, I've been in
contamination hell lately)
*Can the BRF be sustituted with Soy Flour just the same?
*How wet were your cakes when you innoculated them?

McMan McHappy you said;
>Soy flour has a MUCH higher amount of available protein so you will definitely increase
your chances of contaminations.<

If your substrate is sterilized effectively.. why do higher protein substrates have that risk?
If there's a competitor in the substrate to begin with, shouldn't the competitor still win
despite what nutrition is available? Or is it the reproductive speed of the competitor
that gives it the advantage.?
I just used Millet flour instead of BRF in finch seed cakes ..It will be interesting to see if
there is a difference. I also did a mish mash of rye, finch, brf, vermic as an experiment.
hmmm TOO MUCH protein eh?? splain please.. thanks

Well It's been a while and because of other life distractions I didn't post updates as I wanted. My FOAF did get a HUGE flush from that first batch you can see to the left and a few from a 2nd flush. Right now the cakes are almost expired and will be thrown out soon and replaced with some Cambodians I have ready to birth.

What you see growing in the right POD is actually a 2nd batch started shortly after the 1st batch using B+ obtained from Ralph. I'm not sure how much to expect from a first flush of cakes but I'm very satisfied.

It's interesting that most of the growth is from one single spot on each cake. Almost all of these are growing as clusters sharing the same area of the cake.

The cakes that were from the 1st batch (left pod) must have been from badly isolated spores... I won't be ordering spores again from that particular vendor because of this reason, as well as the extremely long order processing times I've encountered. -- If I have to wait 1 month to receive a syringe I at least expect the quality to be there! Anyway.. slightly fewer mushrooms were harvested as this current batch however the stems were unusually hollow and not very bulky. Because of this the mushrooms when dried resembled tiny sticks that required a nice pile just to equal a gram.

Ralph's spores on the other hand produced "meaty" literally solid stems that retained quite a bit of bulk after they were dried! The quantity was also a bit greater. You've got some great spores Ralph!!!

I have been trying to think of something negatively constructive to say about my Hydra-Pod experience but I have been extremely happy. The most difficult part of the cultivation experience was making the BRF jars. ( I'm actually thinking about trying birdseed next.)

After the jars were incubated and birthed they were placed into the HydraPod and basically forgotten until time to harvest.. The Pod keeps the humidity high at all times and requires nothing more than the occasional check on water level and the single timer setting change when fruiting begins.

I did have a terrarium with perlite humidification sitting in another area to see how the cakes performed in comparison. After a few days of regular misting / fanning I decided it wasn't worth the trouble but continued anyway. Those cakes produced only 2-3 mushrooms each and the cakes started shrinking almost immediately. Not seeing anymore pins after a week I threw them out and permanently retired the terrarium setup.

Oh yeah.. The reason the cakes are dark on both the top and bottom is that a layer of vermiculite was placed at the bottom of the jar as well as on the top.

Question: Does anyone know if the mycelium will continue to colonize the substrate even after birthed? In other words, if my FOAF births a jar too soon, before the core of the cake has been fully colonized.. will the mycelium network continue to spread to this area during the fruiting phase?

Thanks,

thedm9

wow... those are some of the prettiest cakes ive seen. not all shrunken like HQ's cakes have been when she used them.

did anyone post about this at mycotopia? i mean, thats really a cake audience over there... and this blows away their "new" flat cake tek.

mcman- can you do larger cakes than this (like nushrooms), or should they all be kept seperate when birthed? i liked the big cake idea.

what did the flushes come out to be (in dry grams?)

im just curious, because I am about ready to buy one of the PODs and would like to know the yields you got

being a newbie i figure this is absolutely the best way to go, because it does so much for me. so long as I get the jars right....

It must be hard to trip if you anthropomorphize your shrooms.

wow! ....I can really relate to the 'shrunken cake' problem - these results look great for cakes, with much less drying out than usual!                                                Great work thedm9 & mc man for the design , I'm really impressed!
look forward to seeing more results as they come in .....

Hey thanks guys for the support.

There are now 7 cakes of Cambodian's my FOAF put into that pod to the left about 5 days ago. IF IT WILL START PINNING (insert explicatives) I will post some photos of those.

This is the first time I've tried anything other than B+.. I know the B+ got very fuzzy on top just before pinning.. These Cambo's don't seem to be doing anything .. hmmm

You can see why I did though?

When ever TheDm9 has made a post, Mcman has replied within an hour.. distanced teh time himself I thought. No matter what time of the day, when thedm9 made a post, mcman would psto a little while after.

Thedm9 first post was about the hydrapod. All his post are about the hydrapod.. He just joined suddenly to keep us all updated on the progress of his setup..

He only showed 1 grow system in the first pictures and two int eh later ones.. I would be skeptical that someone testing a unit out for the first tiem would roder a second one. Also why didnt he mention he ha two from teh begining? Seems like a rather large detail to overlook..

I t seemed like in the wake of the recent 'failure' workman had that McMan would need to have somethign just like this happen to save it.. but like I said, I'm a rather paranoid person.. I'd say my own mother was someone else if I had reason to..

Nicely observed, Jared.
Seems some persons would do anything for some positive feedback.

You know this whole, "thedm9 is Mcman" thing was kinda funny at first. But threatening me in PM to have someone look up my IP address is a bit over the line.

Not that you'd get anywhere. I use several anonymizer programs that hide my real IP.

But for all I know you could be some law enforcement official. I personally don't think that threats to expose someone's identity should be taken lightly in this community.

Like I told you in PM, I don't owe you proof of anything. So bugger off. Any additional posts on the subject will be directed /dev/null . (for you non-Unix types that means ignored)

"Club99

pics..we want new pics....

McMan

Oh senoir desperado!

I think he pulled those cakes since they were extremely slow colonizers and poor flushers to boot. If I am not mistaken, he is replacing them with a much better strain that is almost ready to birth. I'm sure he'll be back with more pics soon... "

This is the post that made me think. I hope it will let think others as well.

And, I got enough customers, ty, you can refer them to whome you want, I don?t depend on your referrals.

Like Bluhoney asked, please take your argument to private messages. Let this thread continue like it was originally meant, so that means don't respond to me, don't respond to any flames, and don't post any more 'clarification', 'bitching', or anything of the sort.

Lets see if anyone can actually just move on and not continue this bickering. I also don't care who started it, its for the benefit of all concerned to stop the flaming.
