So... fermenting.

Never go off of airlock activity. Always use a hydrometer from start to finish.

When I make mead I never pasteurize. Fruit or honey. My honey comes with bee parts and comb caps floating around.

I've seen quite a few homemade fermentation locks including half water filled condoms with a hole poked into the end. I'm sure this happened to one of us at some point.

I recommend champagne yeast. EC-1118 to be exact. Does not produce off flavors unless you try. Also flocculates nicely.

You can stop future fermentation in your must but not the current ferment.

80% of your alcohol is produced within the first 3 days. I like to think that 18% hooch kills any unwanted crap that may happen.

Yeast loves yeast hulls(ghosts) as food supplement.

Do not let spent yeast collect too long or too much at any time.

If I think of more interesting things I'll post them.

I'm about to hurry up on my supply of coir.  One of the options they have is "buffered"

Its a few bucks cheaper

Here's the description for what buffered means.

The question- would this be at all beneficial for cubes?

or would it be bad for them?

if I were to get it just to save the few dollars.

Or should I just go for the normal unbuffered product?

I think that is one big brick. Are you ok with hacking it up?

Not 100% sure about the buffering, but I think it means they make it more basic. Probably soak it in calcium carbonate or something.

Im  absolutely okay with that:rockon: its all I buy.

However I haven't bought  the buffered one yet. It says exactly what it means in the description though.

Seems like it dosnt matter

Who knows, maybe the higher ph would keep contams down.

Does that mean it raises the pH or does that mean it levels It Out like (neutral). When says stabilizes it?

Ps. Most of the time I break it up and do about a thousand grams at a time..

but sometimes I'll just throw the whole block in a big cooler and do it all at once.

Google says.

Stabilizing pH in coconut coir means preparing and maintaining it so it's not too acidic or alkaline.

(ideally 5.5-6.5), which prevents it from locking up essential nutrients (like calcium & magnesium) and ensures plants can absorb them,

preventing deficiencies and stress, often done by rinsing and buffering with calcium nitrate to displace excess sodium/potassium and create a balanced growing environment.

Re: Ask Quick Questions, Get Quick Answers [Re: callmehippie]

Why It's Important

Nutrient Availability: Coco coir naturally has high levels of sodium and potassium but low calcium; if pH is off, the coir binds these nutrients, making them unavailable to plants, leading to deficiencies.

Prevents Toxicity: An unbalanced pH can cause plants to absorb toxic levels of manganese or iron, damaging roots and foliage.

Consistent Growth: Stabilized coir provides a steady environment, reducing fluctuations in nutrient uptake and promoting healthy plant development.

Re: Ask Quick Questions, Get Quick Answers [Re: callmehippie]

How It's Done

Rinsing: Thoroughly rinsing coco coir removes excess salts, especially potassium and sodium.

Buffering (Charging): Saturating the coir with a calcium nitrate solution displaces the unwanted potassium and sodium ions from the coir's cation exchange sites, replacing them with calcium.

Maintaining pH: Using pH-balanced water and nutrients, and adjusting the solution as needed (with pH Up/Down) to keep the root zone within the ideal 5.5-6.5 range for optimal nutrient uptake.

In Simple Terms

Imagine coco coir as a sponge with some sticky spots (ions) that grab onto good things (nutrients) and some bad things (sodium/potassium).

Stabilizing it means washing out the bad stuff and ensuring the sponge is ready to hold onto the good nutrients you give your plants, making sure the plants can easily drink them up

I know that coir is a touch on the acidic side so they probably just bring it to 7. That would be my guess, but I am really not sure.

I hate breaking up bricks. That shit gets everywhere when it’s dry and I usually do it in my kitchen so the brown dust kind of pisses my wife off.

Ironic.

after reading all that.  it's cheaper than the unbuffered product.

I just want to know if it would be harmful at all for cubes it is cuz it's worth saving a couple dollars if not.

:hatsoff:

I just put it in a 64qt monotub and use a screwdriver and Hammer and split it into reasonable size pieces that I can weigh

all the dust (pretty much none because I'm only splitting it like you would with a hydraulic log splitter.)

stays contained right there. I do it right in my bathroom and grow space without any issues.

Big chunks go in the cooler and then I do the rest of the breaking up after the hot water has done its job.

Pretty much no mess at all though

I was just looking for somebody else to read it that does understand it and give me a definite yes or no  whether it's okay to use:lol:

I have 3 x 350ml jars of popcorn probably around 70% colonized and has slowed since for a week or so.

I want to set up a mini monotub for fruiting one of these 3 jars.
Can I please have some reccomemdations on the size of tub? And do I use coco coir with cubes?

I already have a feeling something is wrong or contaminated. I still want to do this either way so I would just like reccomemdations for a mini monotub.

It will be primarily for learning. If something happens that's a bonus.

I’d use a 6qt shoebox for one jar. Post a pic of your jars and someone can help you out.

For single pint jars I spawn them in some small tubs I bought at one of the dollar franchises. It says 12.17 cups or 2880 ml. Here's a pic.

Has a little vent on top. Perfect size for a 1:2.5 ratio. Also works great if you have lots of clones or if you are phenochasing or isolating traits.
