Cyan spot is the only woodover colonization of the garden outdoors that ever achieved much. Not surprising considering its supposed to be  native to norway. Tending the spot, and a happy discoverante of the fact that the mycelium is spreading under the "lawn" close to the threeline where it lives in its condensed, hard as rocks, as my COCK,
mound of cyan mycelium. Its pretty cool to now have both semis and cyans "at home". Looking forward to the frost to see if the cyans put out a bigger or a smaller flush from last year. I wanna see them thrive. I wanna see them grow. Get big and hard

The September rains have started here in Southeast Alaska and I harvested about 30 lbs of chicken of the woods today, plus a bunch of winter chanterelles, goldens and hedgehogs today.
I’m hoping my Gandalfiana patches will pop soon. I’m trying the ice cube trick on one of them to see if it’ll force it to fruit.
Been throwing a little chicken poop on some of them since the best patch i ever had before was one that my chickens had been shitting on all summer. I’ve also been peeing on one of my patches once a week or so as an experiment to see if the added nitrogen makes any difference. The myc doesn’t seem to look any different there, still as healthy as the rest, but if it fruits more there then I might pee on my patches more often haha
I got the idea from an old book about cannabis cultivation. Back in the day before expensive cannabis nutrients were a thing, people used to use urine as a nitrogen source in the veg state.
I figured it’s sterile, high in soluble nitrogen, it’s free, and I often pee outside in my garden anyway so why not try it.
If I get a huge flush I want to be known as the discoverer of PeeTek.

Hey Digit, I'm in SE AK too. I regularly pee in my tomatoe plants and they grow fast and tall. Got the idea because I used to stand on my deck smoking and would sometimes pee off the deck and noticed that where I peed the grass would be much taller and darker green than the rest of the lawn.

I bought a LC of Azurescens, and I'm testing it on agar. After 6 days, 3 most promising plates (out of 6 total) looks like that.

Does it look like Azzie mycelium or should I wait a little longer to see?

Nobody can tell if it's azzy mycelium by looking at it. But it is rhizomorphic, which would indicate that it could be azurescens or something at least close.. but it could also be a cube. I do see what could appear to be a mold colony in the first plate picture though. But that was probably introduced by you considering it's not in the other plates

Fellow pot growers,

I am going to use 100L pots to grow out some mycelated woodchip of different species.

1. P.subs
2. P.Cyans - thanks to NothingsChanged
3. P.ovids - thanks to stagger
4. Eventually P.Niveotropicalis

My question is how would I layer these pots or should I go all woodchip with a casing.

My guess is layering woodchip with soil at the same widths through the entirety of the pot.
I've never fruited woodlovers and it's my first year so I'm very new and inexperienced.

A follow-up question would be what is everyone's water routine and how do I know my pots are getting enough water.

Thanks

I do believe soil gets Anoxic a few inches below the surface.

When I did pots I just covered my spawn with 3-5 inches of soil.

I've only run pots once, so take this with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the answer, it's great that there is a least mycelium growing there. I did 6 plates and posted the 3 promising ones. On the the other 3 there is pure contamination or nothing at all .
.
It is my first time doing agar so I'm also learning how it should and shouldn't look like.  Mycelium grows also slower (at least 2 times slower) than of the cubensis from the same vendor, so that's in line of what is reported on this forum.

Hi everyone, it has been a while.

Back in 2019 I started experimenting with a fridge setup to see if I could fruit cold loving woodlovers. Of course I was a bit naive and thought it would be easy. I failed, and the years passed by.

But something stayed with me and I kept wondering if I gave up too soon. So I decided to improve the project and use it for different things in the meantime. Now I feel it is time to give it another serious try. Since that first attempt I have learned a lot, become more patient, and also more strategic when solving problems.

The project originally started as a simple way to germinate chili seeds, but step by step I turned it into more of an environment simulation machine. It is no longer focused only on plants, but on reproducing different conditions as closely as possible.

I will also create a journal, but here I want to share my current state, get your thoughts, and hear if you have ideas to make this fridge experiment even better.

From the beginning the focus was on controlling light (warm white, cold white, 660nm red, 730nm IR), heating, cooling, humidity, and fresh air exchange. Over the years it has grown into a mix of hardware and software that can simulate complete day and night cycles and even seasonal transitions.

Hardware

The base is a freestanding fridge (60 x 60 x 82 cm) without a freezer compartment. Not having a freezer turned out to be very important for making the modifications work.

Inside the fridge I have:
  • Sensors: one BME280 for temperature, humidity, and pressure
  • Actuators: reptile heating mat, cooling system, humidifier, fresh-air fan
  • Lighting: separate drivers for white and red/IR LED channels
  • Control: 8 channel relay board that switches all devices on and off

Everything is wired to a Raspberry Pi 4. Since I use different voltages (230V AC, 12V DC, 5V DC, and constant-current LED drivers), I had to wire each component into the relay board and power supplies. This part was not plug and play, but once connected it runs reliably.

Front view:

Webcam:

Software

The Raspberry Pi runs a Docker Compose setup with two main parts working in parallel:

  1. Python service
      - Fetches sensor data and writes it into the database
      - Reads target conditions from the database
      - Handles switching logic with hysteresis

  2. Laravel 12 app with Vue and Inertia (still in development, but already working in first tests)
      - Runs in a container and is reachable via the local network
      - Lets me log in, set programs, adjust conditions, and check data
      - Dashboard includes a live webcam feed from inside the fridge
      - Small script for generating timelapse videos from captured frames

The most interesting feature is the environment simulation.

- By giving just a few base values the system generates realistic day curves for temperature and humidity.
- For example, I can select an "Astoria August" preset, run it for one week, and the system creates 96 steps per day with 15 minute resolution.
- I can also add transitions. For example, moving from "August in Astoria" to "September in Astoria" over 7 days creates a smooth seasonal change.

With this feature I can simulate almost any season and place on earth, as long as the hardware can reach the required conditions.

Condition Presets:

Conditions:

What does the difference in the presets change? Here is one example comparing Astoria in August with December:

Astoria - August:

Astoria - December:

Condition Steps:

Current Target:

My current plan is to keep improving the work-in-progress web interface, think about a design, and add more presets. I started with Astoria for azzies because it was first in my alphabetical list. Next will be cyans. I already have colonized grains and chips of both ready for upcoming experiments.

I will also share my code and some wire up plan in my journal, once i am confident with the state of it.

Welcome back mate. If you can't get them to fruit with that set up, it won't have anything to do with your conditions. Looks like you'll be leaving no stone unturned.

Here's a crude chart for P.subaeruginosa I put together from last season which you're welcome to use any way you seem fit for your experiments.

The information was gathered by a data logger which I buried 1/2" deep at the site of an early fruiting wild patch. I chose this particular spot as it often produces very early on in the season.

Temperature readings were logged hourly. Humidity remained at 99% (once the substrate was hydrated)

There was no rainfall at all from placement to first fruiting. Ground moisture was a result of frequently reaching the dew point.

Along with daily temperature swings, the chart shows dry substrate (red) and blue (hydrated) with the first pins emerging after 18 days (day 38).

Hey Bob,

thanks for the data, this is pure gold for my tests. I have some subs on agar which i need to transfer to grain.

Regarding the conditions, yes that was my goal. I wanted to simulate the real temperature and humidity curves and see if it really has nothing to do with the daily swings. I am pretty sure it does not has to do with it and the woodlovers really need something else, but i want to really rule it out, which this setup should be able to do.

After that i am already fermenting/hydrating/preparing some woodchips to see if i can trigger fruiting with that inside the fridge. Lets see, i will keep you all posted.

Awesome attempt and cool with the data logger. I could have sworn there was an indoor woodlover thread around here somewhere 🤔 if someone has that link, will you drop it for me please?

I will say tho, woodlovers don't require gradual temperature changes. They can be swift drops and consistent there after.

Here is subaeruginosa indoors fruiting.
Substrate colonization to 80% at room temp (70 degrees fahrenheit) and then fruiting range at 60 degrees.

I am doing some slight swings on caeruleorhiza though. I do believe that one is an exception because it dips below freezing often during fruiting. I bounce between freezing and just above freezing. But once I get pins, I will keep it just above freezing.

I keep my walk in cooler at 50 now for current species. Have pelliculosa in there now fruiting

I have a Snapple fridge that I'm keeping at 60 currently for caerulipes.

And then I have small mini fridge that I'm using for the caeruleorhiza

Look at Mr money bags over here LOL.

I'm wanting to try some indoor wood lovers but I don't have space for another fridge. I was discussing some of my ideas in the convoluted questions thread. Right now I'm thinking about trying to cycle water through an electric drain cooler into a jcm

Rhizo rider does it indoors without a fridge. He just keeps monotubs on his basement floor. His floor stays about 60 degrees tho 🥶

I've seen him fruit ovoids, azzies, and subs like that.

Wavy edge has a shelf with that he just built a shell around with insulation and he uses a water chiller.
