Definitely look like subaeruginascens. Awesome elpico!

Last night I dreamed about pelliculosa (literally, I did (how weird lol)) and today I woke up to them in my basement:)

Very nice, pheno.  I can’t recall seeing anybody fruit that one.  Looking forward to seeing them progress!

The subaeruginascens matured very quickly.  They’re looking pretty sporeless at the moment, but I have some nice clusters to clone:

Went over to my brother's house and got some extra pictures of the patches:

All the growth is on the edge of the patches. After seeing this, there are some things I wish I would've done differently.

1. I wish I mixed coir or dirt in with the spawn/mulch.

2. I wish I didn't make the patches so thick

I'm guessing I'm not seeing as much action in the center because the wood chips alone at that thickness aren't holding enough water.

To mitigate this, I sprinkled on some dirt and wet it all heavily. I'm hoping that repeated cycles of wet dirt evaporating will encourage pinning in the center.

Still, there is a decent amount of pin clusters growing around the outside. Even if the center never pins, I'll end up with more than I did in the few pots I did last year. It's my first attempt at a patch, so a bit of a learning curve is to be expected.

Hi all, I need some help with the next step, trying not to muck up all my hard work.

I have managed to get some good grain bags underway, they are almost ready for the next stage. I have some sterile sawdust available and some wood chips. I initially was going to tub mix the grain and the sawdust together and then fridge it for cold shock, then grow in the coldest part of my house. Now I am wondering if I have to keep the grain and the sawdust in a proper bag, then mix that with the wood chips? Then maybe just try straight outside? Any tips on my next step? Working with NZ golden tops cyanescens, it's almost spring here. Thanks heaps for help

Why would you want to cold shock it before it's even colonized the wood?
Also, don't use sawdust. Use chips. Ferment them in a bucket full of water for 2-3 weeks. Drain them for a day or so, until they're not dripping wet and relatively dry to the touch. Add your grain spawn and colonize them in the bucket or a tub with the lid on loosely, at room temp. Outside is fine if it's not too hot or cold. Indoors is fine too, just keep it around 15-20 degrees F. When the chips are fully colonized you put them outside in early spring, either in a bed with flowers or other plants, or not, in pots with flowers, or not, it's up to you. You can feed it more chips when it has colonized the whole lot. If you get it outside early enough and the myc has fully colonized all the chips and turned it into a solid chunk by the time autumn comes, you can get fruits the first year. I've found that pots tend to fruit more often the first year but if you can get an in-ground bed through the next winter in healthy condition that beds produce a lot more.
The only reason to cold shock is if you're trying to force fruiting early, or out of season entirely, but it should only be done once the myc has fully colonized the chips and it's well consolidated. AFAIK cold-shocking to get fruits out of season doesn't usually work all that well. There are exceptions I'm sure, but in general I don't see a lot of ppl posting about great success with it.

I've fruited a few things that I thought for sure were sporeless but every time, when I scope them, I find spores

good news - bad news: my patches have mycelium all through them. I only know this because a squirrel, in the process of hiding nuts, threw chips all over the place. I had seen them digging in the yard for the la
st week or so but figured i’d roll the dice. He or them, hit 3 different spots of mine.  I covered what I could with hardware cloth, the stuff is kinda expensive though so i’m hoping he will take my actions as a hint. I also bought a dummy owl just in case they fall for that Resisting the urge to buy a pellet gun😜

This may sound weird, but I’ve been doing an experiment with peeing on some of my outdoor patches once in a while. I often pee in my yard while I’m smoking outside and I found myself unintentionally peeing on a patch a while back.
I decided to keep doing it once a week in the same spots and then watering it afterwards to avoid salt buildup in that area.
The area where I’ve been doing it is doing well so far, it doesn’t seem any different than the others, but my hope is that the extra nitrogen gives it a little boost when it starts fruiting in the next couple of weeks.
If it works I want to be known as the inventor of pee-tek.

Why not check piss jug alley along the highway?

Edit: I have wondered if adding some Diesel Exhaust Fluid to the woodchip soak water would be beneficial. It's like 30% urea.

Just spotted the first Cyanescens pins.

This is a little spot where I put down a bag of wood spawn this spring. It's not the inly place where pins are turning up but certainly faster than the existing patch and more prolific

Niveotropicalis and xgriseocaerulea

2nd attempt with niveotropicalis. Last time I tried sterilized wood chips and got trich. Still have that grow outside in a cloth pot but the hot summer dried it up pretty severely. Will see if it survived as it cools down and the rain picks up in October.

Have wood chips fermenting for this run. Fingers crossed

Most of my jars are pretty sweaty right now, closet has been running about 80f, last night and most of today I’ve had the door open and it’s been 73-75f so getting some condensation

First aztecorum pin of the season. Same pot that fruited last spring and the fall prior.

The September rains have started here in Southeast Alaska and I harvested about 30 lbs of chicken of the woods today, plus a bunch of winter chanterelles, goldens and hedgehogs today.
I’m hoping my Gandalfiana patches will pop soon. I’m trying the ice cube trick on one of them to see if it’ll force it to fruit.
Been throwing a little chicken poop on some of them since the best patch i ever had before was one that my chickens had been shitting on all summer. I’ve also been peeing on one of my patches once a week or so as an experiment to see if the added nitrogen makes any difference. The myc doesn’t seem to look any different there, still as healthy as the rest, but if it fruits more there then I might pee on my patches more often haha
I got the idea from an old book about cannabis cultivation. Back in the day before expensive cannabis nutrients were a thing, people used to use urine as a nitrogen source in the veg state.
I figured it’s sterile, high in soluble nitrogen, it’s free, and I often pee outside in my garden anyway so why not try it.
If I get a huge flush I want to be known as the discoverer of PeeTek.

That's a good way to compost your woodchips, not grow mushrooms.

Some pics from the ones that were ready first:

My brother came up with a cool idea to keep in humidity on the patches.

He made a frame using bamboo stakes and zip ties and covered it with some breathable cloth. The mycelium is starting to show in the middle of the patches now that he's done that and I put the dirt on. We might end up with more pins forming in the center.

Not that many harvested today, but more are coming:

Alberta, Canada.

We're around 20-28c during the day, but dropping to 8-12c at night.

It's really interesting that a semi consistent cold shock is all that's needed to induce fruiting.

Makes me wonder if a plug in cooler could be added onto a Dreamer Tub type system. Build up some cold air in the cooler, and blow it through a tube into the DT periodically. Might just be easier to put a timer on an adapted fridge though.
