Same rule of thumb applies to all pots be them plants or mushrooms. Pick them up and get used to the weight. Both dry and wet. Weigh them if you have to but it's a bit overkill. I even apply this rule to indoor trays when growing section zapotecorum being they tend to like tons of misting and it accumulates.

Yeah the problem was that i did not use a wire mesh to keep rodents away from the patch.
Got the advice here to use a wire mesh but the forest is at the edge of a town, so there are a lot of walkers.
Did not want to let it attract peoples attention...
The first layer of woodchips has been broken up by rodents trying to get the rye berries.
Next time i will choose a better spot, far off civilization.
More grain jars of both species are in progress.

Lay down wire mesh and put chips on top of it and rocks to hold it down. The mycelium will grow through the mesh onto the chips above. So you can totally hide it

Thank you, PhenoDreamers!
Will try this on my next outdoor patches.

The mycelium in my patches has completely taken over the entire patch except for the top portion of the top most layer. It feels solid, like all the individual wood pieces have been glued together.

I pried a few of the bigger pieces off the top and this is what I found:

The patches are a mixture of maple chips and mulch. We have two weeks of hot weather ahead of us. Hoping for a long autumn and an excellent harvest.

Hi all, I need some help with the next step, trying not to muck up all my hard work.

I have managed to get some good grain bags underway, they are almost ready for the next stage. I have some sterile sawdust available and some wood chips. I initially was going to tub mix the grain and the sawdust together and then fridge it for cold shock, then grow in the coldest part of my house. Now I am wondering if I have to keep the grain and the sawdust in a proper bag, then mix that with the wood chips? Then maybe just try straight outside? Any tips on my next step? Working with NZ golden tops cyanescens, it's almost spring here. Thanks heaps for help

Another flush of Niveotropicalis from a pile of FWC topped with red mulch. Established the pile with some bags of sterile Aspen shavings colonized with grain. Buried the aspen in the fwc, then topped with the red mulch. These pics were taken over 2 days at different times of day. May give them one more day to harvest.

I noticed the last time this pile flushed, there were a lot more aborts. The only thing handled differently this time is instead of watering the pile close and deep, used the mist setting on the hose twice a day. When not actively fruiting, soaked the pile once every couple of days if no rain. Once pins start to pop, mist setting twice a day. Bigger fruits this round too.

Were they fermented and sterilized or just fermented?

Autumn in my area is quite dry. I'm wondering if I should cover my patches in a thin layer of soil to improve surface conditions.

Any thoughts?

First colonized some sterilized aspen in bags, then dumped a can of fwc not sterilized, then buried the colonized aspen in the fwc, and topped with red mulch.

I just moved to a consistently dry area myself. I was thinking to adapt to the climate here, outdoor patches should be buried with a few inches of soaked vermiculite. Especially after seeing some ovoids pop up in gravel in recent posts, I think it could work, especially if near an irrigation system and surrounded in vermiculite.

First pins in my Azure patches

They are all growing on the edge near the dirt, which adds some credence to some extra surface moisture being beneficial. Probably going to scoop .5-1cm of dirt over the middle of the patches. Just something to improve surface conditions

Psilocybe serbica subaeruginascens decided to finally pin during an August heat spell, after a few seasons with no fruits:

Edit:  species corrected, thanks Adas!

I don't think that's Serbica, buddy. The cap color is kinda funky and the gill color is completely white. Unless they bruise blue I'd say you have a look-alike. Definitely do not consume for now, until properly identified.

Hey Adas, good eye.  These are definitely a Psilocybe sp.(they arenโ€™t producing spores yet).  BUT, you had me second guessing, so I just went out and took a closer look.  Turns out these things have a strong ovoid odor, and a translucent stipe with some remnant veil.  They are almost certainly Psilocybe subaeruginascens, which Iโ€™ve also had incubating outdoors for the past few seasons.  Seems I mixed a few flower pots around.  This also explains the fruiting temps.  Well, not a bad consolation prize, since this is the first time Iโ€™ve managed to properly fruit subaeruginascens.  Still batting 0% for serbica, though.

Subaeruginascens would be cool as hell! I hope that's what you have! (not that Serbica weren't cool or anything  )
