A PF puck is just a small volume PF cake. Works the same.

It's more so annoying when they fly by my ears and it spooks me, also I grow plants from seeds so the less flying creatures about them and eating the roots the better.

I've not had issues with them as such, but I just want to keep the numbers down, they are rascals.

Yeah that's reasonable. I understand the annoyance of flying little shits... That's why I got me electric bug zapper going constantly. I just haven't had gnats flying around, they stayed in the FC and they were very few.

Which also gave me an idea. Are gnats drawn to light like mosquitoes? In that case a zapper could be the solution to your problem but that's just a guess.

That's a good idea, but I'm unsure if that would be any more effective than good old yellow fly tape. I'll have to have a Google around to see how well that works for the fungus gnats

Cutting their lifecycle is de whey.

You can trap em but it does nothing to keep them from laying eggs first

so if it fruits in a shoebox it should fruit on a cake or cased puck, all other things being equal...

How much of an agar plate do you transfer to a jar?

I’ve seen the video Beef posted where he did half a plate per jar but his agar almost seemed paper thin the way it was dropping. I made a jar of grain let agar plate thinking that was the move but now I’m wondering if that’s too much and could cause problems for the jar just like injecting too much LC.

you callin my plates skinny?  naaaah i pour FAT plates my dude. skinny plates just stick to the walls.  and no, too much agar doesnt cause issues.  too much lc can cause issues becsuse of the liquid.

ive done whole plates, but i like to spawn tubs with pairs of jars.

you can do as little as one wedge per jar but im not patient.  i got shit to do.  if my jars take more than 2wks theyre in the trash.

I've had to split wedges because they were too thick to fit in a cabin.

But I've settled in to an even thickness, basically when pouring the media covers the plate naturally.

Gotta agree with this, if you want to get rid of the problem you need to execute them completely and their eggs + larvae.

I'd say a zapper is better since it makes them explode like Chernobyl in 1986. But that's if they wanna kamikaze it, otherwise it won't do much good.

I know fruit flies love flying into them at least.

no need for cabins when your plates are clean

It's very difficult to do as they have easy access through the window, summer heat is brutal at the moment, also I eat a lot of veg so they can get in from there too.

Also with all my plants, it would be very difficult to get them completely, so much soil

Obviously I understand I'll never be rid of them, but whatever strategies I can implement to manage is good.

Plates are clean, as evidenced by those I've set aside unused.  Those plates I did transfers to had spots in about 5 out of 20.  I excised those (vertically) and nothing's returned.  I wrap plates in clingwrap cut to width.  Ty B, BTW.

It's my SAB that's contaminated.  I've washed it out with the hose, sprayed the inside down with H2O2, and now I just consider it suspect.  My first batch of 12 grain jars were covered in green, from the top down.  Wedges were throughout the grain as I use your thigh-thumping method and they were trying to grow, but the green was impossible and from 1/4 to 100% from the top down in all.

Now I do all my plate work as vertical as I can manage, and just now did my innoc to grain by just cracking the lid of each jar long and high enough to drop wedges.

Edit: bluemango, try fogging a dilution of peppermint oil.  And a zapper nearby sounds like a good idea.

A sab can be covered in mold and as ling as you arent making a bunch of air currents it will still work.

Mine sits in a dusty open garage from november till april. Gets washed out with soap and water when i get back in town and thats it. Never sprayed, never sanitized. Just used.

On my innoc just now I was doing great until I put two jars on top of the SAB and slid them...  ah, shit.

Haha the wedges fell so gently into your jars I just assumed they were on the thinner side.

So does more agar mean faster colonization?
