2nd flush produced a respectable 550g wet from the three tubs, so now I just harvested and will try a third flush.  So far, no tames!

Yes, that does happen due to the substrate shrinking

This time around I'm going to punish my tub on its second flush to try the method properly. I feel sorry for my KSSS tub. It's sitting there, so serene. Sipping on the water, engorging on nutrients. So peaceful. If only it knew what was coming, it would be quaking in its boots.

Good luck, I think you will pleased with it, I real scrubbed and sprayed the shit out of it.

I’m going to try on PE after I harvest in the next coming days

Hi guys! I’m having a problem with getting massive pin sets that don’t grow more than a few mm. After scouring the forums for days, I think the problem is that I used too much grain spawn compared to coir, and there just isn’t enough water for all the pins to grow. I’ve been considering either; 1)spraying the pins heavily 2) dunking the cakes with the pins 3) picking off the pins, dunking, and hoping the next flush is hydrated enough 4) picking the pins and punishing the cake.

Which option do you guys think is the best?

For more information:

1:1 spawn and coir ratio
Coir just below field capacity, then thin pseudo casing layer that is heavily sprayed
Neglect tek 7 and 11 litre shoeboxes without airtight lid
Kept at around 21c

They pinned (heavily) after 2 weeks, grew a few mm fairly quickly, and then pretty much stopped completed (with the exception of a few bigger ones). I’ve tried to be patient in the hopes that they will get a growth spurt, but it’s now 2 weeks after pinning with very little progress.

Thanks in advance!

Sometimes a super heavy pinset can be caused by reactions to contamination. They generally abort because there isn't enough water to support a pinset that heavy. What you do to it at that point is secondary.

I’ve done some bottom watering and will now leave them alone and see how they get on. Thanks for your help

So do you “punish” after you’ve soaked the cake again for 12 hours to rehydrate? Or do you skip rehydration when you’re only on your second flush?

Sorry, newbie here. I’m only somewhat well read up until LC, Agar, and Grains so far. Taking it all as it comes.

I started doing this as an alternative to soaking. a colonized substrate is hydrophobic and wont absorb much water No matter how long you soak. I always thought it was pretty pointless.

Do you still do this?
I've harvested all my top fruits

and went the extra mile to get bottom and side pins too.

There seem to be some small pins showing up, but I dunno if I should water the whole tub or something else?

i never leave stumps.  i still do punish and also let my sub just float in water for all subsequent flushes.

My first flush was meh, the second even worse. I was going to dump it, but it wasn’t contaminated. I punished it, soaked it and a month later I was rewarded with this subtropicalis grow.

I believe that this tek has hit on Evolution's Survivalism.

I fully endorse this tek. I took two cakes from 32qt totes. After returning from two weeks away, one was totally dry like a new brick of coir with hard dried pins on it. The other was probably only 3 or 4 days away from being the same. I punished both of these cakes on all 6 sides, then soaked them in a couple inches of water in their totes and drained the totes. Covered them and left them alone. Lo and behold 5 days later I have harvested 201g off the bottom and 276g from the top and sides from one of the totes and have a nice acceptable flush coming in on the 2nd cake, which has already produced almost 1200g wet. As a note, I am getting a bunch of side and bottom shrooms on these as  well. Wondering if flipping the cake in the tote after punishing would have produced different results?

2nd cake after punishment…

I’ve been scoring my oyster blocks with a sharp blade for some time.  It seems to make the block explode with pins.  I wonder if this punishment might be useful for a misbehaving tub of actives.

I’m not an expert in this tek as it was the first time I tried it, so maybe Beef or another TC can weigh in. However it seems, buy cutting like you did it exposed what it underneath all the myc covering the sub. Essentially the punisher tek washes all that, the dropped spores, aborts etc off the sub exposing what you did with the knife. So I guess it could work as well on a tote of cubes. But like I said I’m no expert in this tek to really say. It looks like you and I both had good results though.

Also your cake looks like a yummy ham cut like that! 🍖 🤣
