it depends.
essential? no. you will have mushrooms without it (true for most varieties)
is it beneficial? by all means yes.  it helps keeping the casing free from contamination as many contams cannot thrive on a ph adjusted substrate.
i dont know where you are, but you can most likely find either or / both.
do you use online shops?

ps. mycelium in time promotes acidity in substrate and casing and keeping things ph balanced / slightly alkaline helps when you want to keep your grow healthy

You might try looking for it as pickling lime at a grocery store.

You want calcium hydroxide to adjust pH.  Or very large quantities of calcium carbonate (non-dolomite powdered 'limestone').  Like 1:4 to peat.

And no, it's not going to work if you just use peat.  The pH is way to low for either of those species to pin.  But contaminates will love the low pH.

Proper pH adjustment isn't optional in other words when making your own casing.  That said, you can look for stuff that's pre-adjusted. In the United States we have a product called jiffy mix which is pH adjusted peat with verm in it.  Cactus soil is another common one.

But y'all really don't have pickles in Spain?  Pickling lime is calcium hydroxide.

Anyway, they might do okay with a top dressing. Assuming your top dressing is like a mix of coir and pasteurized compost.  The bispo in my sig was done that way and then topped with grass seed to provide a better microclimate and beneficial microbes (endospores on the grass seed).

Go to a painter. They often make and use lime paint. Same lime.

Hydrated lime is great for grain prep too. If you think you have grain issues consider soaking grains in water with several Tablespoons of CaOH, or adding it to the boil.

It's how hominy is made from corn.

Have you ever tried working with hominy?

Pans seem to love corn, and it's pretty much all I use as a grain for them.

I'd like to do some experiments using various forms of cornmeal and hominy grits are something I intend to play with.

So, I am curious how far you have taken that lime soak.  And how it does.

No but I'd consider it if I found corn at a good price. I've only used lime on wheat and recently WBS.

I suggested it a while back in a thread where people were dealing with mysterious contamination and Josex ran some experiments that showed much improved performance. Grain prep thread

For me, a lime soak of 12-24hrs, rinse, then a lime cook gave me fantastic spawn. It's carried over to the WBS pretty good but I'm still a little rusty.

I'm curious about the cornmeal, how will you handle that consistency for use as spawn?

A couple years ago I noob stumbled into pretty decent results using grits in my entry for Hobbit’s Secondhand Mycology Challenge part 1.

checkbout his current challenge grow linked in my sig. Gonna be fun.

I appreciate both of you sharing that data with me.

As far as the hominy grits, I was planning to prep it like a cake/puck. Similar to these brf pucks hydrated with compost tea (also cased as they're pans).  And my plan was to run out a bunch of experiments on them to quantify blue vs yellow corn, Nixtamalized (lime soak) vs not, and nitrogen and mineral supplements vs not.

Some mycologists in China tested a bunch of nutrient sources with an Asian strain of Pan Bisporus.  Corn has a lot of preferred sugar sources and maize powder was a preferred nitrogen source.  So yeah, I want to play with it some more.

Said study.

https://europepmc.org/article/CBA/602890

And yeah, I guess the lime soak gets rid of mycotoxins from aspergillus and other competitive fungi.  Which probably are toxic to the fungi we grow.

I can't find hydrated lime / carbonate calcium anywhere  for the  Pans casing. I've went to gardening stores, fertilizer shops, and animal supply stores ,nobody sells it. I live in Europe.

Is really  essential?

Go to the supermakrket and get "pickling lime". Same thing.

FYI it's not sold in supermarkets in other countries necessarily, you have to order it from chemical suppliers here or get it from brew stores.

It's fairly specialized in many countries
outside of the US.

I get my pickling lime from Amazon.

This is my question:

Surface conditions before pinning for ochraceocentrata? How much microbeading on the surface is good? What % of the entire surface should be covered in them? Should they be <1mm in diameter, <2mm?

Thank you ! I finally get Calcium Hidroxide! When preparing the casing  any way to measure the correct quantity of hidrated lime? I following this recipe :

10 parts peat
10 parts vermiculite
1/4 part hydrated lime

Is there a way to calculate it by weight or just visually by volume before hydrating? Can I use just peat or better always mixed with verm? Can I add too much hydrated lime?

I need a smaller amount of casing, so it would be 1 cup (0.4 quarts) of peat and 1 cup of vermiculite, and 3.7 grams of calcium hydroxide. That is correct?

Plate questions…

This TTBVI keeps going like this exact look on each plate. They look great and then all of sudden they look like this. I’m ready to try a T3 transfer, but am I missing something here? Is this what they normally look like?

Hillbilly Pumpkin…Is this how they normally look? Fluffy and pure white.

These plin plates…what do I do from here? I had great T1 plates from these already and sent those to grain. I don’t want to waste these, so I’m not sure what to do.

I have used that recipe a couple times. I would not skip the verm; i don't know if verm is necessary, but it makes it nice and fluffy, which helps me apply the casing in a thin layer that is not clumpy. I also recommend sifting your peat through a colander or screen before measuring to remove sticks and clumps.

Like you, I don't need much casing, so I make 1qt at a time. I measure the ingredients when they're dry. I'm not sure what kind of measuring cups and spoons you have in Spain, but I use these imperial volume measurements in the USA:

  • 2 cups peat (16 fluid ounces)
  • 2 cups vermiculite (16 fluid ounces)
  • 2.4 teaspoons pickling lime (I eyeball the .4 using a 1/2 tsp measuring spoon that's not all the way full)

Not sure how much water I add, I add a little at a time until it reaches field capacity.

I use RoscoeReturns dehydrator tek to pasteurize this small amount
