Sorry, those are certainly APE, first APE I grew. Biggest was in 50s g I think. I used the exact same method, with coir and oatmeal flour. I used that because of pantry moths.

I would still use oatmeal flour, but I might add in some chickpea flour as well. Freaking moths

I use bag garden compost from the store, screened and then steam pasturised overnight as my substrate amendment.

1 part compost to 3 parts coir for bulk.

It's performance seems similar to more complicated recipes I have tried and I know some of the talented bisporus cultivators use a similar recipe because I copied them

Regardless of what you use, I'm 99% sure I have seen a tek for pans cult that is extremely similar to what you plan to do Husky and regardless I think it would work perfectly fine.

Getting your environment dialed in will be the fun/hard part, but you gotta just roll with it

Excited to see how it goes for you.

Did my first PF Tek in a long time using plastic containers. I did coir and flour and happy with the results.

I am thinking of doing this for my first Bisporus Washington grow. Basically would do a blenderless LI with one of my plates and inject. Difference would be the substrate would be half coir / half composted manure and black soil.

Any recommendations or should that be fine? I was going to case it with pure coir as a verm layer and basically leave it be.

Holy shit....I was like super mutant AF pans?!?:shocked:

Thank you! I'll crosspost here when I have something worth mentioning. Do you think just coir for the casing straight from the beginning will be fine?

^and thanks!

Ah gotcha Huskies, would be awesome to see a PF-style bisporus grow.

Screened compost is my favorite for the little guys.

It doesn't get much easier than screened compost, except maybe the liquid nutes some members have been playing with.

Huskies you can totally use coir as a casing layer!

I have used straight verm before or you could go no casing layer, it works ask Baba, but usually some sort of casing seems preferred?

I am biased, I like using one

Peat based seems the most commonly used and I lean towards it because it has the best water holding capacity.

Lately I've been running 50/50 peat and coir as casing, pasturised with 1 tsp of hydrated lime per cup of casing.

I don't want to buy vermiculite anymore, and except for mycelium being more visible on the coir/peat vs verm/peat, performance seems similar.

I’m sure you’ve probably already seen it. But just in case, this thread could be helpful for your project.

Oh yes, EF-Tek is an option for sure.

I am at the end of my fine vermiculite and am not too keen to buy another one, still have a full 100 liter of coarse but that stuff sucks for casing. Still have a full bag of peat here too but don't want to buy peat anymore either tbh. Well so far casing with just verm worked OK and sometimes great, just coir was so 'n' so but could be improved I suspect and no casing did a good job for me as well but it seems it's not for everyone. Bottom line I think is that it all can work well but requires some getting used to.

If the 2 jars of Bbar are actually getting somewhere I will try your coir/peat suggestion Dkeppel but one of three had some green in it so the rest might be duds as well.

Oh man, you are on the bbar! Spore or wild clone culture?

My fingers are crossed for you, it is my favourite cyan I've run so far! But I have only run the wild clone culture because it's that dam good.

I should run the bbar clone again with the coir/peat casing to properly test it out and an uncased tray aswell but I'm always running new species

I suspect bbar will do well uncased actually because its so aggressive.

It's interesting how many people I've seen say they have had "meh" results with straight coir, I wonder what it is

I intend to see if I can brute force it this summer, ezdial tub treated exactly like cubes and even if I can get one pan to spore, take a print and go to agar and back to grain and do it again. Just see if maybe after 5,6,7 generations we can breed some freaks that just don’t give a fuck

90% of me thinks if it was that easy, everyone would’ve done it, but still a little slice of me hopes I can just pretend rules don’t exist

I actually don't know what culture this is, not having much time atm but I do as much cult as I can meaning I grab an old plate from the stack in the cupboard, sterilize some grain and see if it gets me somewhere. My LC-culture bank stays untouched til I got the time to do some decent culture work and be able to replenish and ideally improve what I use.

Yes, it is indeed interesting how some methods work for some but not for others. I for example can't seem to get a decent PE or one of it's relatives grow accomplished but I also have to say that I am not very passionate about it tbh, so I guess one gets out what one puts in or something along those lines.

I ran Mystery SA on coir casing.  It did okay but not great.

Currently, I have bispo top dressed with substrate (compost/coir/verm in this case) and grass seed.  It's fruiting well.  And the grass improves morphology and surface conditions.

Yes. I’ve had great results using just a coir top layer with aggressive cuts. But you must take care to prevent the surface myc from drying out. Challenging in my climate, might not be in yours. I opt for a casing layer if I don’t feel like babying them. These days I’ve been enjoying jiffy mix. I just sift it & toss it on.

Pretty dry especially with electric heating. I spawned those cakes in the plastic containers I PCed them, after soaking them.

Tbh I haven't been sure how to best do many cakes. Right now the ones left are all in a big 60l tub. There is still some condensation on the sides but not much, gonna go give a mist actually. But those are cubes and less finnicky.

Would watertubs work well with Bisporus cakes? They'd be protected from contact by the plastic. Maybe putting closer to the heater would work, what is their preferred temp?

Which plate seems better?

Water tub would work I bet.  Folks are growing them in monos and getting beautiful flushes.

So they are not as fresh air hungry as cyans.  They do appreciate very high humidity.  And I fruit mine at 72f or higher.  I'm not sure if they will pin well under 70.

What are you using as nutrients in your agar?  I've never seen them brown up like that so I can't say which is better.  Or if it's a sign of problems or just different media than I use.

Regarding Plates: Hard to tell when they are all grown out like this, would be easier to look at a half grown out transfer. FWIW they do look the same from what I can tell. Is that what you want to liquefy? Haven't had a look at bisporus culture on agar in person for a while, maybe someone else can give you some more solid opinion on those.

Fruiting in a water tub sounds worthwhile trying. For me they fruited fairly easy with no fuzz. If you are up for an experiment on the side then provide some head space with your cakes and you could fruit them in the container. These are grain spawned to a wide mouth quart jar and 2 liter plastic bottles but you get the idea.

I think 70 is still a good temperature, I'm in that range a lot when it's not summer since providing a constant temperature is difficult for me, didn't some one here say they fruited them in low temperatures, maybe adas or was that him saying they overwintered on their balcony and survived?

Cool, I'll probably aim for that.

Those plates were made with undiluted gnocchi boil water. Been my go to for a while (link in sig)

I'd run both plates if I was in your shoes.

I use low nutrient agar.  Like half or a quarter what folks use for cubes.  (Learned that from Baba).  For your gnocchi broth you could cut it with more water.  That's what I do when running grain water, but generally I just do 0.5% LME.

Here's a pic from fall to give you an idea.

Basically, uniform growth.  If one was more uniform before they grew out all the way, use that one.

All from same sample plate (not copes)

Old and Last Grain Water

50% Diluted Gnocchi

100% Gnocchi Water
