Re: Ask Quick Questions, Get Quick Answers [Re: MacNCheese]

TLDR; real fluffy mycelium growth, vs thin veiny ‘ideal’ growth, any differences in when 1 should break up each type, or a difference in how you handle the types of colonization?

~~

Hey all, 1st timer going off the hip, started by inoculating jars, grain bags, AIOs, and even 4 UB bags so I could essentially try out each tek and start from there.
After 7 days, almost everything is looking well and off to the races.

However, I’ve noticed that some of the mycelium looks more ‘ideal’ I guess, where you can sort of the see the roots expanding over a more thin and localized, and then I also have the real fluffy mycelium that is thick and more like big cotton balls that are concentrated but more spread out. The fluffy mycelium also started growing incredibly fast; there was a big fluffy ball  on 1 of the bags the 1st time I checked them (3 days after inoc- e4k flower power)Furthermore, the 2 fluffy mycel bags are both  ‘premium grain’ bags from the same ‘well known’ vendor.  furthermore x2, a different grain bag inoculated from that same LC syringe  has that ideal mycelium growth explained above, so it seems (maybe?) the grain source is what’s accounting for different type/rate of growth.

My question is just general inquiry about each type of maturation and if there are any growing tips associated with them
🙌🙏🤞

Uploading pics of the growth would help give an idea as to what you're looking at. In regards to colonization speeds, I have personally seen evidence that the more surface area the spawn has (ie smaller grains like milo and millet), the quicker the mycelium can colonize the spawn. If I decide to break and shake, I like to do so when the mycelium has colonized more than 50% of the grains, it typically recovers very quickly (<week) afterwards.
I'd definitely recommend giving The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Shroomery a read. I too started off by injecting bags of Uncle Ben's, to very disappointing results.
Welcome to the Shroomery, I wish you the best of luck in your journey!

Hoping to get some insight into this.

S2B: 8/8, 1:1.5 ratio, grain jar was thick milkshake myc, probably bacterial, smelled mushy. 1.5 quart used, direct to fruiting conditions, holes poked 1 " above sub level , 2" apart and then at top some holes again. Ambient >30 deg C RH 45~75% (its monsoon seaon here) no fixed light regimen just ambient indirect light. Cubes RW.

They are very thin and dangly, shall I just keep the bag open for more FAE? I suspect it will dry out if I do that.

Give them more light

I think it’s likely my most controversial or unconventional hill I often will die on, but EVERY single time I’ve seen long worm looking fruits with pinhead caps- they are being grown in the dark.

Some more extreme examples

I could be wrong, and it could be other factors at play, like we already know low FAE causes thin fruit. But every single time I see the wormy look it seems to do with light, and the pattern recognition is recognizing patterns

Three questions:
-How do I get full (or fuller) canopies? The closest I've come is this first picture, but most of mine are more like the following three. And subsequent flushes are typically thinner and thinner.

-How do I get more out of my second and third flushes? I believe I read that typically, the second and thirds are a bit fuller, but in my case, they are quite a bit thinner.

-How to get more out of each flush in general? Someone said that if they got less than 4oz dried per flush, they considered it a waste of time. Maybe that was bragging, maybe not. I think my single highest flush (a first flush) was just a hair over 2oz.

My process:
Agar to ensure clean mycelium. Agar wedge to sterilized grain (oats) jar. Let it spawn, shaking periodically, until it's got nice and full coverage.

I'm doing Beefy tubs - 8:2 Coir:Grains w a pseudocase of 2 qts of coir on tub. I've got 3 holes drilled low (about an inch above the substrate) on either long side. 5 holes drilled high on either short side.

12 on/12 off with my lights. I mist when things are drying out and I don't see any beads of moisture in the substrate (either the sides or on top) and/or there isn't any condensation low on the sides of the tub.

I'm in an arid climate - I usually mist my tubs about every 2-3 days.

Thanks!

Are you growing out clones or multispore cultures? Clones tend to more consistently produce canopies. Squeaky clean spawn is important too, though you may have that already, can't know from this post.

Subsequent flushes are always sparser (though with bigger mushrooms) for me.

A dry ounce per quart jar on the first flush isn't bad. Honestly that's usually what I hit with canopy shoeboxes, but I understand you can do consistently better with more substrate (and hence more water) per jar.

That'll work fine for LC and agar.

Try 0.1% by weight for LC, 1% or 1.5% for agar media.

Hmmm... I'm not sure how to answer that. I purchased LC from a vendor, popped in onto an agar plate to grow out and went from there. I keep the same strains on agar and transfer them to a fresh plate as the older plates get used up or dried out.

Subsequent flushes are sparser, but BIGGER mushrooms! I think that's what I read - thanks for weighing in.

These tubs are either 45 or 63qt tubs. All with 8:2 + 2 qts on top.

I was gonna make liquid culture and grains right now and I noticed my tap water smells bad right now for some reason. Would PCing kill whatever is in the tap water? My tap usually doesn't have a smell like that.

PCing will kill anything but might not denature everything. It might not be an organism creating the smell. I would try flushing out the pipe for a few minutes and see if the smell gets better.

Are you rehydrating the sub after flush?

How is your field capacity at spawn?

Having a bright light 5000k or more  for 12/12hrs is a good Secondary to help the canopy pinset.

As well as evenly laid/compressed substrate. (yours could be a little more level, might help. But those aren't that bad considering)

I'm in a pretty dry environment, I need to cover the holes with tape while colonizing tub. After day or two of 100%, opening up the top holes helps the pinset come in. While mainting humidity / allowing evaporation off the surface (pinning trigger).

After that I'll usually open up the lower holes to allow more fae, the denser the canopy the better the micro-climate is maintained.

You definitely want to see beading on the colonized surface. The walls is just fluctuations/differences from outside/inside of tub, it's the surface moisture that is important.

Thanks, I appreciate that. And I’m not at all holding breath on those UBs, I did it for sheer variety.  Im hoping I get atleast 1 success from which I can propagate.  I got a big SAB to work with for 20 bucks and I also found out I have a decent PC I can go and get for free, so I will be upping my game properly, regardless of any turnout.

Here is the bag of grain I was slightly concerned about, because of its thickness and seemingly lack of roots. It’s growing fast (day 7) so I’m hoping it’s not a big bacterial battle going on

My jars of brown rice smell kinda weird after I opened the pressure cooker. I boiled them for 9 min cooled it down and put it in the jars yesterday afternoon and didn't get to pressure cook it until today at noon. So it was sitting at room temp for almost 24 hrs.

I've never used a PC before and I don't know what it "should" smell like. Almost smelled kinda like Brussel sprouts or something. It was kinda sour smelling.

Should I toss it and redo or does that sound normal?

Anyone know why this may be excessively wet. Inside of it could essentially be wrung out, the base of it has a very wet almost gelatenous ring. Plus its almost oozing out of the middle of the cap.

Looks like it putrified. Left on the sub a little too long?

I would also toss that

Some people will tell you to spawn that 1:1 in a shoebox but ive never gotten anything worthwhile spawning jars like that. Toss anything you even suspect of being bacterial is my advice.
