Does micropore tape serve any purpose with modern techniques? I haven't noticed much mention of it...

That’s because it isn’t a very good filter.
What it can still be used on is to cover up the holes that you drilled in your mono tub to restrict some airflow if it seems to be drying out too quickly.

But in the old manuals, it says that you can use it as a filter on your jars.

Someone even posted a thread that included pictures of that micro port tape under a microscope filled with contamination. Showing gigantic holes big enough for eight microbes to drive a bus through.

When I first arrived, I was reading some old manuals and used micro tape.
I suffered contamination on quite a few of the jars which visibly did come from above.

Just fell right through that crappy tape.
Just buy the little filter stickers from Amazon. Those were way better.

How exactly did you plan to flip the lids while maintaining sterility? Leaving them alone is seriously the only option you had unless you wanted contaminated grain.

I don't think your grains actually dried out. Probably some surface moisture got absorbed and maybe a little evaporated, but hydrated grains are more than half water, almost impossible for them to dry out significantly over a couple of days.

Don't sweat it, inoculate whenever you are ready.

Unless you decided to flip the lids after all. In that case your jars are already toast.

Your only option to get lids on right side up would be to sterilize some additional lids that are wrapped in aluminum foil then exchange lids inside a SAB or in front of an FFU/LFH while maintaining the sterility.  It's probably best to just leave them alone unless you're very confident in your sterile technique.  If you don't feel like/can't risk the batch of grain, bite the bullet and toss it and do another batch with the lids correctly oriented.  Grain is cheap, but time wasted is not...

Yeah I really wasn't even thinking but I think ill just innoc and leave the lids as they are for co2 escape upside down and finger tight

I pretty well figured it wasn't good for filtration, or we'd be using it, but I wasn't sure what else I might be able to use it for, since I bought some when I went on my initial shopping spree. Appreciate ya!

If you didn't initially shake after putting LC in, it doesn't look too suspicious to me. But it's definitely ready for a shake now, and if it's clean it will grow quickly after that. (Might grow quickly if contaminated too, so feel free to post when it grows out a bit more if you don't feel confident recognizing clean mycelium vs. contaminants.)

The contamination Genesis is likely referring to is bacteria, which is common in LCs that are not carefully prepared at every step (the reason is bacteria is a lot more motile in liquid, so it just takes a few bacteria cells to completely colonize an LC). If you didn't test your LC on agar first, you might wind up with bacterial jars. Depending on the level of contamination, the effects can vary from it taking a little longer to colonize to it taking so long that competitor molds (e.g. trichoderma) take over your bulk substrate.

Let's just see how it recovers after the shake. :smile:

Your sterile technique wasn’t sterile enough is how that happened. It affects your grain jars by forming little boulders in them like that. It’s bacterial contamination most likely.

Those jars are (or that single jar is) 3 days post inoculation. I don't think that's even enough time to form the hard-to-break chunks indicative of bacterial contamination you're referring to. I just see isolated recovery where there was more LC. :shrug:

Maybe.
I’ve been inoculating with LC and it doesn’t grow into boulders like that unless there’s something wrong with it.

Typically, I’ll see like a trail from where it went down to the bottom and that’s where the myc will start growing.

This is an example of the bad growth pattern.


This was also done with LC though.

Is that first one actually pre-shake? That looks like post-shake non-recovering jars I've seen. Edit to add: I guess I'm just not seeing the "boulder" you're referring to in Fiet's pics.

Beautiful example of healthy growth in the second one.

Some of my jars had gotten too far to get shaken.
That first jar I think I attempted to shake it, but it was already a solid lump like that in the middle so it really just went up and down a couple times and didn’t do anything.

Everything serves a purpose. Only nothing is inert and nothing by it's very nature doesn't exist.

MP tape I find extremely useful, just not for reliable filter patch material for sterile purposes. For example I like it under my full size sfd covering the hole in a metal lid so grains and liquid don't come up through the hole between the lid and sfd. It is also very handy for non sterile GE situations like field sample collection and such things. It also holds things together very well through multiple PC cycles, whereas things like masking tape do not. If you are practicing practical mycology, MP tape is a good tool to have in the box. It also can be used to regulate GE in FC's in various situations and helps to prevent certain insect infestations (mites get right through but they are not insects).

Psilocybe Fanaticus.

It was a business which sold spores along with a little booklet on the method. They were shut down by the fuzz. PF is much of the reason mush cult is so accessible in the modern vernacular of home hobbyists. My hat tips to him and the risks he took. Thanks a million PF. You changed history.

I don't call them brf cakes. They are PF cakes, and always will be.
