i did g2g to this jar from a fully colonized WBS jar. it has been 1 weeks and it is like this, it feels too slow. what can be wrong with it or what should i do?

Just a quick question.  I have a one quart jar with WBS spawn that is ready for bulk.  I had a bunch more, but had trich and tossed it.

I have a small 20 quart monotub that I intended to use the whole jar on. However, I ended up prepping a 64 quart tub as well.

So, I have one quart of clean spawn.  Should I use the entire quart on the small tub or is it possible to make it stretch for both tubs?  I don’t mind having patience if it just takes longer to fruit.

Alternatively, I had the idea of using 3/4 of the spawn on the small tub and using the remainder to spawn several more WBS jars.

Got a pic of the spawn? Spawn ratio can be cranked up (e.g. 1:6) if the spawn is clean. If dirty, lower works (e.g. 1:1)

Sure.  I moved them outside real quick because my lighting inside always casts shadows that look like contam.

Edit: I said “them” but this is one jar.

just spawn it into the 20qt

I just had a top tier idiotic idea, or an absolute game changer of an idea. Im usually in the former category, but I figured I'd ask.

Has anyone ever used a Rapala electric fillet knife to harvest bulk subs? I feel like that has the potential to make it a real quick job, if your sub is level and you float it to the rim of your tote. Maybe that's too much horsepower to not mangle them, idk...I'm willing to potentially sacrifice a a few fruits to try this out. 🤣🤣

too unwieldy. if you wanted to do it, fill the bin with water to float the sub. if you can't do that its not worth it imo.

Thanks. This jar is bacterial. This isn’t clean spawn

I’d go closer to 1:1 or maybe even top fruit. And, no worries. It takes time to see contamination and then more time to exclude it

Yeah, without being able to run completely parallel to the surface of the sub, aint no way. I might try it just to see.

So, that causes a few follow up questions.

1.  What characteristics convince you it’s bacterial? I see no discoloration in the jar.

2.  If it is contaminated, why would the ratio of spawn to bulk matter?  If it’s contaminated shouldn’t I toss it?

There’s a lot of condensation in the jar, which is usually a pretty sure sign of contamination.

the bare grains and condensation combined with the uneven, sparse growth and milky texture all point unequivocally to bacteria. it can affect both the morphology and behavior of the living mycelium.

To answer the substrate question:

Sometimes you can squeeze a first flush out of bacterial spawn by going at a low spawn:substrate ratio because of colonization times.

A 1:1 colonizes and therefor fruits much faster than a 1:4 because there’s less material for your mycelium to claim. You have to remember bacterial grains are sick, literally suffering from a bacterial infection like you or me would be sick. Now imagine being busted up into a thousand pieces while sick. You now have an infected AND weakened organism being asked to perform work, so you want to give it the easiest task possible. It’s not even a guarantee that your tub will succeed, but it gives it the least amount of work to do between jar and fruit.

Hi Guy's i am not a newbie so i make some Grain Spawn years ago but know i try it again using a PC at 15PSI for 90min I know some rye beans are bust but i think it's OK to use them. Then i inject 3-4cc per Jar Liquid Culture B+ Strain "good choice"? Let's see how the Tek works.

Not trying to be pedantic, I’m very much a noob and want to learn as much as I can.  If the goal with bacterial spawn is to make the least amount of work for the mycelium and fruit as quickly as possible, would it be even better to just dump the spawn into an even smaller tub at a 1:0 ratio. In other words, just see what I get from WBS alone?  Or will a 1:1 produce more?  Last time, it seemed to be going well and then I got trich after 14 days in bulk.

I’ve been trying since January to get this going and it’s been one setback after another.  At this point, a handful of shrooms would be a joy.

You need to provide the mycelium water. Mushrooms are 90% water. That’s the entire purpose of the substrate.

What you CAN do is add coir to your jar. This is called “top fruiting,” but imo it isn’t worth the time and every to do so. Yields are usually awful.

I’ve gotten 10-15g dry from highly bacterial spawn. Literally uncle Ben’s. If you don’t want to throw that away, my suggestion is a 1:1 shoebox.

Often I read that people try to improve a cultivar by selecting a fruit with the best phenotype within a tub, make a spore print, get a clean culture, grow new fruits, and repeat those steps over and over.

QQ: is my assumption correct that this doesn’t work when you isolate a strain on agar every time? My reasoning is that situation every fruit has the same genotype, regardless of what it looks like.

And if so, does this also mean it’s beneficial to send a plate to grain ASAP when it appears clean, so that there is as much genetic diversity as possible?

Listen to these cultivators, though. They knows what they talkin about. May want to take another crack at running some new jars.

To be fair, I just sent a cake about as disgusting... if not more.  I've never seen anything move so slow.  If a pin hadn't of finally popped it was about compost pile time.
