Really just depends on your capabilities. If you have a large sterilization unit like a medical waste autoclave, the world is your oyster and you can use any size bag you want. If you have not had experience using jars I would highly suggest starting with jars for bulk growing. Bags have a lot of troubleshooting to get down with.

Use bags with .3 micron filters for spawn not the ones that are .5 micron.

Without accommodating gear, bags are a big time pain in the ass.

Got a laminar flow hood. Very excited. Been doing some testing. Placed 3 clean petris across the length of it and kept them open for about 3 minutes. Been letting those sit for the past 3 days and so far nada.

In terms of a flame test I get about a 45 degree angle on the flame 6 inches away but the outer edges of the filter to either side seem to be weaker, is this in area of concern? I also get an 80-90 degree flame 1 inch from the filter but it flutters and doesn't extinguish. Should I also be concerned about that as well?

Edit: I guess another question would be when spreading spores on agar is it good practice to change loops or does flaming till red hot negate that? Apologies for all the questions lately, some of this info just isn't readily available on here.

Sounds like a brand new bad ass HEPA filter to me. Everything you are describing is normal.

Flame sterilization of the same tool repeatedly is the norm and works very well. Red hot metal is 100% sterile.

Stop apologizing for things you don't need to. That is a form of self deprecation. You are valid and deserving and as stated in the OP all questions and answers are welcome and encouraged in this thread. :hatsoff:

Spawn bags do not come in .3 micron filter patch.  The come in 3 mil thick plastic though.  Spawn bags filter patches come in 2 sizes.  .2 & .5.  Use .2 for grain spawn and .5 for invitro fruiting as I stated above.

.2 I meant.

Dissexlic brain swapped the .2 micron for the 3 mil thickness...

WHY does an atmospheric sterilizer work without pressure and only steam. Will it make a sterilization strip indicator thing turn?
I am missing something here if it takes 3h at 15psi for grain bags, but 12h+ at zero psi?
Anyone have a link to somewhere I can read something?
Thanks

Having troubles regulating heat in my home during winter..

Did some tests during the early hours of the morning and where I have my bags it drops down to around 12-14c

During the day it’s 18-22c and evenings up to 25c as we have a log burner.

I’ve looked for other areas in house but all pretty much the same.

Q. Is this detrimental to the growth or does it just slow it down?

Q. Any suggestions on a cheap and inexpensive way to mitigate this?

Womtat & Natalensis

Cheers for the help

I must admit I kind of rushed into this without thinking about how I was going to regulate heat.

It's simply not as hot and takes longer to get core temps , out of a 90 minute 15 psi cycle for grain jars were hoping 20 of those minutes that our core of the grain has reached temp.
It's like slow death vs a car crash , sure we could stand outside in 115 degree weather but try stand there for 12 hours

Looking for a post about someone brutally spaying down and scraping the sub prior to a second flush.

Bought the ticket, didn't take the ride.  In other words, tried the search feature, none of my brilliant word combos worked...

Perhaps someone can remember the OP!

Big shifts in temperature can absolutely affect what you’re trying to do.

I don’t think you’re gonna like my answer.
But the reason you’re having those big shifts is because wherever you’re living is horribly insulated. Try getting insulation installed by whomever you are renting from or if you’re the homeowner get some installed yourself. The temperature is not supposed to shift that wildly.

I have a question of the day. I watch this one guy on youtube that scrapes his cakes lightly with a fork after birthing to "promote better pinsets" is there anything to that or is that very bad advice?

Yeah you’re right..the insulation is terrible. The roof and floor has good insulation but the walls are appalling. It’s a major project to get them insulated so just have to deal with it. It has been particularly cold where we are the last few weeks.

After I harvest these, would they dry ok in the dehydrator as dense and thick as they are? Previously I have been slicing them first, but would they be ok to toss in whole?

Theyre still expanding somehow currently but I gotta assume theyre at their upper limit soon.

Knocked this up 15 days ago and it’s struggling to meet in the middle… other jars are going ok.

I can’t see any signs of a contamination but I’m guessing it is?

If it’s ever a concern just rip them in half. Milkboy goes by the sharpie rule: thicker than a sharpie and they get halved.

I have seen several different preparation methods for it. I like just leaving it to soak for 24 hours and then rinsing it until the water is clear.
