You're going to be waiting on your tub whether you're climbing the walls in anticipation, or chillin out and letting it run its course. Is this your first or only tub? I have a hell of a time being patient when I'm waiting on one grow to get me going. My first shoebox since coming back to this is just now pinning, and brother, I totally get it. I've been keeping myself busy with agar work and Jerry Springer reruns. I think you're in good shape though man.

This is literally my first tub in life  despite a long lifetime of experiences with psychedelic and being aware of their therapeutic value.

I have heaaavy anxiety which is one of the reasons for this project (my docs are out of medications they can try and I've been working on being put on ketamine treatment for years). I know I can work myself up lol.

I guess what really has me a bit nervous is ive identified a few key features of my cakes so I can remember when something if significance has changed and like the whole tub hasn't shifted almost at all that i could see in last two days. Also since all four corners of the cake are lifting away from the monotub sides it's clearly drinking.

Plus my early realization that I really didn't put enough CVG mix in imo. the cake is too thin in my completely inexperienced view. I'm gonna take a pic to show you the thickness in a bit

I think I might be starting to get an eye for this, bc I thought the same thing.

Stoph - how much time elapsed between inoculation and when you saw growth on your plates? Did the two start showing at the same time or was that 2nd one ahead of the 1st?

These were inoculated at the exact same time from two different LCs. Now because I'm an idiot I actually forget which is which. One is GT and one is Hillbilly. I believe four days to see the growth.

I definitely recognized that the second one looks quite different, but I attributed it to maybe just what happened to be in the exact little drop I put on there, i.e. less mycelium.

Heading out of town for a few days so we shall see what I come back to. First time with agar.

Im 99% sure the thickness of your sub isn't going to dictate success or failure, so I wouldn't worry about that. I've only done a few monos ever, but what I've experienced was seeing the substrate colonize and then appear to just sit for a bit before I would see knots and then pins after that. Assuming no other variables, if your tub finished colonizing on day 7(roughly) and you're on day 9 now, it's definitely too soon to start worrying. If you haven't already read up on identifying and maintaining proper surface conditions, hop to it, so you can tweak the tub if you need to. But yeah, it's hard to not be nervous and overthink, but do your best to toss aside any expectations of when it should do what and accept that it's going to perform on it's own time. Make sure surface conditions are good and let it ride. You'll get there, amigo.

You make it sound like there was a single particle that was bad floating around in your LC.

If you have a drop of something that had contaminant in it. That whole syringe is contaminated.

Ah ok. Idk what hillbilly is, so I can't speak to whether or not the two LCs would look different. Ive only just started agar myself, but I've had as many contaminates as I have myc growth, so figured id ask about the timeframe since I've noticed contaminates have popped up pretty early for me. Have a good vacation man - I suppose you'll have a more definitive answer by the time you get back.

People will tell you to sterilize your water in the PC, but I will say, anecdotally, I have done that method with success for PF cakes.

It can work. As long as you accept it’s not totally clean and then proceed accordingly.

I understand the irony, being I’m not a TC, but don’t listen to what “new growers lean towards”, new growers lean towards growing their shrooms without light, misting and fanning, sending bacterial spawn, trying to make automated spaceships out of monotubs, etc

New growers lean a lot of ways, that is the importance of

Listen to the TCs, and then experiment from there in whichever way suits your fancy, but as you are learning I’d highly recommend you to get the convention down before considering the input of new growers.

Sure. Although I don't think it's really stalled yet as we are only starting day nine I'm probably being paranoid.

This is day three approx.

This is how it looked by day seven:

I'm on mid day nine now and not much change at all from early day seven.

And I'll take another pic of the tub momentarily, but I have seen very little change since this early day seven vs mid day nine. I can notice little difference at a casual glance without opening my lid fifty billion times and being really anal retentive.

I definitely thought I'd be seeing lots of primordia and pins at this point at least...

I guess the anxiety is only due to how fast it took to get to this stage only to not see much last few days. The four corners of the cake are 'pulling away' from the sides of the monotub, but there are still streaks of water coming down all four sides so FAE and humidity doesn't seem too off. Droplets visible on top, CVG mix was moistened to field capacity prior to mixing with spawn.  Evaporation is what encourages pinsets and water is definitely evaporating, but... I dunno. Probably first time jitters.

edit:

Forgot to say I suspect my substrate might be too small for this fruiting stage , which is stalling the grow. This was my first tub and so I didn't do an adequate job measuring three or four inches of substrate/spawn mix and it looks more like two and a quarter inches of substrate for five half pint jars and one small bag of spawn.

Oh that’s all totally normal. My last tub took like 2 weeks from full colonization to start pinning.

The condensation and uncolonized bits of grains pushed up against the glass probably spell bacteria. I don't really see the "ice cream" look of a badly bacterial jar, though. If it breaks up easily it's probably not too bad.

Might want to spawn that jar separately if the other ones look a lot better. Have a 6 qt shoebox or a 2 gallon Ziploc bag?

I'll try that! I'd hate to waste it

It works. I use a taller narrower pot and keep the lid on. I make a couple of syringes at once and keep them until I need them.
I also add 30 mL of water to 1/4 pint mason jars and PC them when I do cakes or millet. Seal them up and pull into a syringe.
Safety reminder, I use blunt tipped needles because those phlebotomy needles hurt.

It also occurred to me that I have about 20 of these thin, stick on "SFDs" that I bought, not realizing that it wasn't the same SFDs I saw people using here. Ive cut and siliconed them for jar lids, but they make me nervous, if I'm honest. They're pretty thin to be receiving any kind of impact like shaking grain jars and whatnot, so I bought some proper ones recently. Long story short, I was considering just sticking one of those to the underside of a lid on my sterile water, in place of a SHIP that would be replaced after one use, and then poke through it with the syringe to draw. A SHIP is still considered sterile if one leaves the foil on after the PC run, yes? Idk if the same assumption could be made for this stick on, but it would be less messing around, and I dont have any other plans for them anyway.

Ah that's the news to soothe my worried newbie heart. Yeah when researching I've seen a lot of places say things like "if you haven't even started seeing pins by day 14 something is probably wrong", and it can be difficult to parse the cut off line for when information is still relevant or not.

I'm surprised there hasn't been(ignorance alert incoming) more modern high quality books displaying the most up to date information in the mycology field. I know Stammets stuff but from a curating perspective I'd like to see something exhaustive with glossy print photos and charts and tables and recipes and formulas. Every few years you could do a "new edition" which updates all the old outdated info.

If such a book exists let me know I will buy it this second! 🥳

I don't think your stick-on SFD is going to heal the way silicone or rubber does when you stick a needle through it.

You are trying to make it too complicated. Just open the lid for a moment to draw water in. Using shallow jars (e.g. 4 oz or maybe wide mouth half-pints) makes it easier.

Not sure why it would sound like that to you... What I suggested was maybe there was less mycelium in it and so it would start slower, or be more wispy, or who knows what.

I’m just trying to convince you that the drop is uniform of what’s in the syringe. There is not a good or bad drop. If the drop is contaminated, all of it is.
