So do I. As written above, in trying the figure out the cause of contamination.

Most importantly if grain can be so dirty that a 2 hours 17psi pc cycle can't sterilize it?

I bought some really cheap wheat. So I'm wondering if that is the culprit. Never had issues with rye.

Thanks in advance

I trialled different grains for months and all the cheap wheat got 100% contam after the first shake, eventually even without a shake, only certain pans on smaller jars would make it through but I’d only get 1/2 flushes, some grain are just impossible which is something I didn’t believe until I’d experienced it, was even lime soaking before prep which only bought me a little more time, ditch that grain and find another.

Bacteria is one thing but if your getting mold it has nothing to do with your grain choice or PC cycle

Ok so a lot to think about.

It's definitely mold that I get and not bacteria. Since mold spores die very easy it's probably a filter failure.

I attached the sfd's on the plastic lids by heating up the plastic around the hole so it melts and then pressed the filters against it so they stick. Maybe this way I didn't get a proper seal like you would have with silicon.

Now I've found some unmodified lids , so I'm running a cycle with those. I understand it's pretty straightforward but just be sure.. I unscrew the lids 1/4 turn so air can escape out of the jar during the cycle. I run the cycle in the evening and let the pc cool down during the night. Do I need to worry about comtam getting sucked in while cooling down with partially unscrewed lids?</font></font></font></font>

You don't have to worry about contams. Leave the giggle weight on during cool down.
Are you tenting your jars with aluminum foil?

I don't, because I thought that's just for lids with filters, to prevent them getting wet. These lids are unmodified.

Should I ? I can imagine it maybe a cover for the lids during the transfer from pc to sab..?

Once you have tightened the lids the aluminum foil is removed.

But (why) is foil needed for unmodified lids?

Got some clean ass millet, 35$ for 40$.
Haven't had any contaminated jars or bags, knock on wood.
Was fuckin around with the PC and did 11 bags one day, I had 12, but the air vent thing kept popping out, so i used 11 bags of almost 900g each.
Well that 12th bag has been sitting around for  11 days, hydrated but not sterilized or sealed, just bags folded down, and there's no contam, it was kept on the dining room table for almost 2 weeks and it's been hot with no AC until yesterday

Leaving the foil on will keep the top of the jar sterile but if you are working in a sab, removing the foil will disturb the air, and that air will pick up contaminates which land on the lid. i always assume that anything I can't flame is dirty and act accordingly.

Qq guys. Are Jack frost a slow fruiting variety? I've had this tub spawned for 2 weeks now and I feel like it should be further along. I used 1/2 a qrt WBS to 6 of coir and verm.

I feel like I’m not seeing enough moisture on the tub.
Maybe there’s too much free air exchange because the surface looks pretty dark with moisture.

A one to twelve ratio is going to take a while to colonize, be patient.

I misted it this morning just to see if it was maybe dry. What's a good ratio in a 21 quart tub? I gotta jar of P.E.s coming up behind them.

Bro, Jack frost is lightening fast, I spawned some on 6/17 and am harvesting first flush today. Maybe it is this culture as I got it as a LC and did a couple transfers and made an LC but it was super fast

The ratio dosen't change depending on the size of the tub.
I like 1:4ish for cubes with what i visually infer as axenic spawn... but now you're talking about PE that has a nasty tendency to blob with a vigorous mycelium... If you just have 1 quart of PE spawn: put a layer of 2qt of coir in the tub, them spread the qt of spawn as a layer and then hard compress 4qt of coir on top, this will avoid blobbing. Godspeed!

I spawned this one 6/19... I had some hillbilly's fruiting next to it dropping spores and shit maybe that messed it up?

Spores don’t affect fruiting. That had nothing to do with it. As mentioned earlier you only used half a qt spawn to 6 of substrate. That’s a very low spawn ratio, and it will take some time to colonize. Just be patient.

I've been running modified and unmodified for years without foil , my PC ain't contaminating any jars, don't over think it just do your work and leave a jar alone after the PC cycle as a control.
If your inoculated jars contam and your control doesn't chances are it's your technique or inoculant, if a couple contam and a few are fine I'd say it's your technique

That's good to hear I was starting to worry. I'll go a little heavier on my spawn next time.
