Hi,

I am a beginner in growing mushroom. I started with trying to clone dried mushrooms on agar. After months of work I have something going on on my plates. The problem is that I am not sure if it is the real thing or contamination. Can anyone go through the pictures and leave a comment please?

What’s the date on those plates? Mold tends to grow much faster than myc. You could transfer some bits from anything that seems possibly something and then you’ll know for sure soon enough.

QQ: Upper limit on amount of mush that can be reduced to a small volume of tea?

Pic 1 and pic 3 look like your best bets, although only the left side looks promising. The right side of that plate appears to have contamination of some kind.

Pic 2 and 4 appear to be mold.

Transfer growth to new dishes and see how it does. What kind of mushrooms are you attempting to clone?

Sorry, from the unorganised growth seems like 2 kinds of mold and stains of bacteria.
I started, just like you :hug: trying to resuscitate dried fruits from my dealer after getting my face deliciously melted :lol:  ...the thing is, if the fruit is decently dried, there is no water to support life... so, probabilities are that you're growing something that landed on that dried fruit after the drying process. But, just like me back then, you're starting to get experience on agar. You have to get your hands on viable spores.

Pic 1, 2, and 3 are transfers from plate on pic 4. The left side on pic 2 is growing very very fast while the right side is growing same as pic 1 and 3.

Best thing to do is a break and shake. If they’re bacterial you’ll know in short order. If it recovers then you’re good. And from the looks of it that’ll be your last shake anyway

I did bags that were pretty big(1500g total) and it was taking a while...they were also no prep millet, and they seemed a bit dryer at the top. So I shook them and we will see!

That depends on a lot of factors and ultimately comes down to personal preference.

No pours are a great way to get started for a lot of folks, I am still using them.

Pouring means it will be easier to get into the volume game.

If you did your jars right a month should be no problem.  I have some I let sit a few months that are colonizing.  I made them a bit dry, so they're going slow, but they're going.

slow and steady will get you there, almost always.

Unlike the the alternative, more often than not. the wetter side of things, the road starts looking more bleak.

20mins is standard lab practice for a small room, an hour for larger spaces, apparently it’s to get a steady current of air flow stabilised in the room, or you can do what I do and just turn it on and go

I used a thingie I got from Midwest, that measures contaminants in the air, and it took about 3-4 min for the contams to get down to zero.
