Here are the results of my cordyceps militaris with and without gypsum.
I did 5 jars with and 5 jars without gypsum.

I used the egg broth recipe, brown rice and a culture from a reputable source which I expanded in a LC. The only difference was 5 jars received an addition of 1/2 teaspoon of gypsum added to the jars before sterilizing.
The weights below are not tared before so the container weight of 155g should be removed from what is on the scale.
Without gypsum 54g

With gypsum 58g


Without gypsum less color

With gypsum more color

Combined weight 111g.


I don't think it made a huge difference in yield, or beneficial nutrients(not able to test) but I'm going to be adding gypsum to all my C. Militaris grows from now on since it didn't hurt and I have 4lbs left.

xls-t... nice a lil bit stretchy big bag with a spawn grade filter.  (.2 micron) you getting a lot of A 1000? ONLY 610!  the other xls-b and xls-a bags have a .5 micron filter for faster colonization times.  They are a bit cheaper too.

I bought 20 xls-t bags at top dollar just to try them out, and I love them.  Optimal bag technology indeed. Also less melty than the cheap brazilin forest 5 lb bag kind.

They don't take up much more room than the 5 pound bags you can lay them down on their side if you only got 8 " Clearance.

I believe they have 14-A XL as well which will be a little cheaper. Check out mushroom media online. They have great prices and will have a description of block size/typical use on them.

Thanks. I found the XLS bags in my local reasonably-priced shop of choice. Apparently one can choose A (0.5 µm), B (5.0 µm) or T (0.2 µm) type filters to them. I have zero experience on these but I guess A-type would be ok since it's not the riskiest and not the slowest either..

They also have the 14A but those are categorized as 5lb bags and not 10lb bags. But apparently they'll fit the 10lb too?

For some reason I was denied access to mushroommediaonline's site but I looked at the dimensions elsewhere. Seems that those XLS bags would fit the 8" shelves if laid flat and fruited from the side. Is there a downside making the slits to that narrow side? I don't yet have the 8" shelf trolleys but I'm considering of purchasing these for oysters too - if it's all the same if the block is laid flat and fruited from the side or not. I'm getting them for my LM which I do in these untypical sized blocks.

I’ve fruited lions mane from top and small side at the same time so don’t see why it would be a problem but never tried it myself. Depending on shelving you may have issues with them trying to tip over but hopefully someone with experience fruiting like that will chime in.

Another question: Currently I've piped my pretty much sealed incubation tent to transfer the hot and co2-laden air into my microgreens tent and outside after that. Will I have problems if I just incubated in my operation room using nothing but shelving? No tent, no separate room, just blocks on racks in the room where I do all the work. About 1300lb all the time. With problems I mean will the co2 level of the room rise too much to work in? The room will have one 4" air inlet from outside and microgreens tent exhaust going out. Do you guys have separate incubation rooms?

Probably be ok imo.

Just want to share what Im up to in regards to experiments. In Australia we got a problem with Lantana. I went to a mates place cut and painted ( poisoned) some lantana amd chipped it into a trailer. Yesterday I made some supplemented sawdust and lantana wood chip substrate, steam sterilized for 10 hours and inoculated today with black pearl oyster millet grain spawn. In bags btw.
Ill post pictures tomorrow. And updates of course.

I might get a professional food packaging sealer for dirt cheap but I don't know if it's suitable for sealing substrate bags. It's the type that heats the "jaws" all the time opposed to impulser sealers. I read somehwere that impulse sealers are best for PP bags. Any opinions? Dunno what's the actual difference in terms of performance or seal integrity - it has to do something with the temperatures I think?

Hey here I am old lantana boy with an update.

Looking fine so far on day two from innoc.

And one of my sterilizer cause its a hero.


Doing up a new batch now with increased supplementation of wheat bran, increased from about 10% to 20% and have tried soaking the lantana chips and twigs to see if it helps or hinders. Theres not super fine attention to detail but im trying to be around abouts close to scientific.

Hi quick question

After you harvest your first flush from your block do you seal the bag up again with tape or any other means while the mycelium recovers for the week(ish)?
Or do you cut a new hole and just throw it back into the fruiting chamber? Neither?

It's my first time so I'm unsure

I just leave mine and they fruit again. I read in Stamets book if you have the space and want a third flush it pays to move em to a new room as they start to get some competitors on the blocks. Im no expert though.

ALSO I forgot to say the sawdust in the Lantana mix is mix Eucalyptus sp(blood woods I think)

i usually just let the 2nd flush push out of the slit i cut the first time.  you will want to soak your block, then re-cover it, and then cut a new hole.

Is it safe to grow edibles on eucalyptus?

Sounds good thank you both very much

with the next few blocks I do I'll try both soaking and not soaking and see what works out best for my jank ass setup lol

For now I'll probably keep it to two flushes and move on to the next block

Stamets refer to a misconception that it wasent but puts this down to an isolated case and specifies that it is perfectly fine and a good choice. I have had many a yummy oyster from Eucalyptus sawdust and haven't died yet.
