Pearl Oyster Question ( +Pic) *Updated*
    #800066 - 08/06/02 02:11 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Hello,

I recently decided to try my hand at growing some edibles. So I got a friend from IRC to send me a few colonized oyster dowels (Pearl Oyster strain, he got it from the STP, I was told it was a clone of the strain FP sells), took some cultures on peroxide agar and currently have some straw just beginning to colonize (Spawned 2 days ago.)

Does it look like I used way too much spawn? I know that wont hurt anything, but I was just curious. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else here had any experience with the Pearl Oyster strain sold by Fungi Perfecti and the STP. From what I?ve read, different oyster strains can have quite different fruiting temps. I looked at the STP?s site and it says the fruiting temp for pearl oysters is 50-60F. So now I?m wondering if I?ll even be able to get these to fruit indoors easily? It?s pretty cool in the basement here, stays in the mid 60s-lower 70s, but that?s the best I can do without going out of my way (which I?d rather not do ). Anyone have any helpful comments, advice or input?

Thanks,

DH

Oysters are pretty aggressive....once they're 100% colonized you'll probably find that air exchange and a little light will be enough to trigger fruiting.

It's hard to say whether or not you used too much spawn....but that does look reasonably well colonized for 2 days with oysters....so you could probably have used a bit less.

Let us know how they taste!

That would be most excellent psyconaut, it would rock to get some nice fresh oysters growing inside .

Unity333- I got a few colonized oak dowels in a trade with a friend from IRC. I would offer to hook you up with a culture, but I'm out of petris ATM and all my current agar cultures are in half-pint jars. I still have the dowels I used, but they've been sitting in a plastic baggie for a little over a month so I dunno if they're still viable. Fungi Perfecti sells kits and cultures, the STP also sells cultures if you're looking to buy one.

I'll post some pics if/when I get them to grow for me .

Have a good one,

DH

I hope at least you fried them in butter first

On a more serious note, I'll be looking for low to mid temperature oyster strains to train with yellow and pink oysters when I come back from Europe (mid-September). I'll also have crimini and shiitake cultures to trade if anyone's interested.

Here?s a pic as promised. The bags were colonized after 5 days. Instead of keeping them in the bag and slicing it, I just took the bags off and put the straw blocks in a terrarium. I first noticed the pins 2 days or so ago. Only one of the blocks I did is pinning so far, the biggest one. There are a few new clusters of pins starting to come out that you can?t really see in the pic. Hopefully the other 2 blocks aren?t far behind. I?ll post more pics as they develop.

Well, I put my aquarium pump bubbler in the terrarium and the caps are getting a little bigger, but not much :/ . I didn?t know they were so touchy about CO2 during fruiting. I think it?s too dry here now to leave the blocks outside of a terrarium though. Maybe I?ll take a clone and colonize some more wood dowels...

Do what Fungi Perfecti does with their kits... put it in a plastic bag with some holes poked in it and then put another bag (sans holes) over that one and just mist it a few times a day. You should be able to leave it out in the open.
good luck

Those look great. I tried mixing 2 kinds of oysters(pearl and browns) and the result was fantastic. I grow them outside and am still getting clusters in abundance. Temp really doesn't matter as long as it is not holding constantly at the same temp. They just need a slite varience in it to produce. I've had them bloom in 98 degree weather. DELICIOUS!

Alkaloids is right- what I do is hang them in the bag in a shed and hand mist.
