Elms are a completely different branch (the oyster part is a misnomer based on morphology, they're more closely related to beech mushrooms).  So I think it's unlikely that's the hybrid.

I've been fruiting the Black Pearl at around 50 but packed up my grows for the winter when I got frustrated not being able to use the hose outside to clean my bins and shit for mixing sawdust.  I just put the culture back on agar though to put into stasis (it was on a slant :frown:)

If you want and are in the states, I could run an extra plate and send it your way.  It's a commercial culture and has yielded pretty well for me.  Just shoot me a DM if you're interested.

edit:  Also, those are beautiful fruits.  Nice grow!

Hmmm, I’ll have to look into it more. The place I ordered it from didn’t have much of a description of it.

I won’t put you through the trouble right now but thank you for the offer! Maybe once you get em going again I’ll have to take you up on that and I’ll send you some king blue in return.

Appreciate you TP! We’ve got the same tag intitials haha :toast:

Appreciate you too!   But I'm a Tree Frog brother.  TF

But I got some snake energy too.

I just came to... sorry about that, at least were closely related(amphibian/reptile). But I’m calling you tree phrog from now on to make myself feel better haha.

And I’ll let the pink lions mane culture ride. Shouldn’t be so caught up on the color as long as it performs and tastes the same.
Woke these guys up for a pic tax:

No need to apologize lol.

The snake energy I have is like...  I was a frog in a previous life.  The snake ate me because she needed energy to lay her eggs.

So, she killed me and transmuted me into her babies.

I was a frog.  Then a snake.  Probably other lives after.

Now I'm a human for awhile and who knows after this.

Mushrooms and trees hopefully.

I'd like to be composted.

Anyway, how are the King Blues flavor wise?  I do a lot of cooking with the stipe of Black Pearl so I'm curious if that whole fruit is yummy.  Also, how's the spore load and what temperature are they fruiting at.

Fuck I think your picture reminded me I'm hungry.  I'm literally salivating lol

Hey depending on what you believe we were all single cells at one point. I like to think I came from a slimy lung fish and now I just identify as a python to make myself think my dick is bigger..
:boombox2:

Honestly I’ve been enjoying the KB more than the lions mane lately! I’ve been cutting them into strips from the base to the tip of the cap and then sweating them a lil bit and getting some browning on them before adding in some butter and then seasoning and getting a final crisp at a high heat before the butter starts burning. Shit is so good it’s almost like bacon strips. Love using them as toppers or throwing em in with a pasta or rice stir fry with other veggies and or chicken

Damn I’m hungry again now:tongue:

Edit: I think I’ve been picking them a bit early so I haven’t noticed much of a spore load at all honestly, even at a pretty large size. At least compared to other oysters I’ve grown before.. My tents currently fruiting in a range of 56-65F over a 24 hour period.

I'm trying to get wine cap to fruit indoors. This is a 27qt ez dial mono. I used 1qt of spawn to an unknown ratio of sub. I used a layer method when adding the substrate and spawn. First I sprinkled a very thin layer of spawn then added a light layer of wood chips that I soaked overnight. On top of that I added a 1 inch layer of black kow compost straight out of the bag and added a thin layer of spawn on top of that. I then added a couple qts of coir and mixed in a handful of spawn and wood chips in with it. Then another very light layer of black kow compost. Then I sprinkled a layer of spawn then topped it with the last of my soaked wood chips. Nothing was sterilized or pasteurized except for the grain for the spawn. This was spawned Feb 12th.

These are some cordyceps militaris inoculated Jan 27th.

I'm also planning to work with Wine Caps a lot this year so am excited to see your results.

I bought 20 gallon felt pots in the hopes that I can start beds indoors this year and move them outside as we move more into spring.

My plan is to run my culture out in small millet jars and then inoculate a couple of bags of unsupplemented sawdust to use as my spawn to wood chips.  Case with compost and leaves, and maybe plant some shade tolerant cabbage on top.

Move to the yard in the spring and maybe surround the pots with leaves or more woodchips to keep them from drying out (and possibly, to expand into a proper bed depending on space in our garden).

Got the idea from the woodlovers active thread.

I have a couple woodchip bags fully colonized with wine cap mycelium. Being that I live in agricultural zone 6 of the USA, what time of year should I inoculate my outdoor beds? I didn't expect the culture to grow so fast, my other wood lovers took forever to colonize the wood chips. Any harm in letting them sit for a couple months fully colonized?

I found out where all my fungus gnats were coming from. My black kow compost must be riddled with the eggs/larva. Everything I use it in gets them, even after pasteurizing it at 155f for 2.5 hours. This one I didn't pasteurize at all and the tub is fully sealed, it's now loaded with fungus gnats. I'm letting them go in hopes it helps the wine caps feel like they are in nature.

@treefrog
That sounds like it should work, from what I've seen on that other thread as well. Keep us posted.

for you spore to spork guys, how are you handling your spawn production?
i was considering making a handful of quart "masters" and storing them in the fridge.

pull one, and expand to "X" amount of grain bags.

my volume is going to be super low, I would only need 20qts a week at the max*

*ill be running unsupplemented blocks, 1qt of spawn per 5lb block

So is the mean green a death sentence for wine caps, or is it ok? I know they need bacteria and molds to thrive but I always thought trich was a tub killer. I'm not misting the tub at all. I'm currently cold shocking it at around 45-50f.

I always thought best practice was to go from agar to grains on a weekly basis so you have fresh spawn to use each week.

Anecdotally I have seen some benefit to using slightly aged spawn (quicker colonization). So you may be able to store grains in the fridge for a few weeks and still get good results. This is my experience going agar to grains to bulk. No g2g.

It gets a little messier doing g2g and the risk of bacterial contam goes up. For instance, if your grains are sitting in the fridge for 3-5 weeks they have a longer window to pick up some bacteria which will be expanded if you g2g.

I borrowed a jumbo china pc but it only goes up to 7.25 psi.

About how long of a run for 4, 10 pound bags with maybe 20-30% rice bran?

I tried a 4 hour at pressure run last night.  Also I mixed everything in the bag with boiling water and put hot bags in at the start.  I plan to knock up them with a whole myco quart of winter rye spawn of a king oyster clone when it cools.  and maybe a lions Maine quart .

I've only tried them inside once before and I went to unpastuerizied sawdust.  They didn't recover from the green.

This year, I plan to inoculate pasteurized woodchips with sterile sawdust spawn.  If I was starting them outside I wouldn't pasteurize the woodchips.

Long answer short, in my experience they don't recover.  At least not inside.

Damn. Thank you. I'll let it go and see how everything works out. I have wood chips ready to go into an outdoor bed as well so hopefully that works out better.

Hey what unicorn bags model is best/suitable for 10lb blocks? Thanks.

Also I'm trying to figure out if I can make 10lb blocks and put them into a rack/shelving that has only 8" shelves (vertical space).
