I use something like this that I found local to me at a crafts store. With it being silicone, I just pressure cook it in a jar with my agar, so it’s sterile.

If you use dye by itself, the colors will all just blend together in the following days after they’re poured. I now use a combination of dye and mica powder, of its matching color, to prevent bleeding. 😁

Hmmmm thats really interesting, and you do the mushroom nutrients in it also, or are these plates just purely decorative?

No I use the dyed plates just like any other plates. I’m a little reluctant to use the rose one though haha.

I did some glow in the dark ones though. Some mycelium still thrives on it while others don’t. I’m not sure if the glow in the dark causes cell damage yet. I’m almost wondering if the glow in the dark could aid in dedikaryotization kind of like snake venom. Some experimenting is definitely underway! In the meantime, I wouldn’t recommend glow in the dark or red dye (which will contain red 40)

Oh okay cool!! Thanks for the info!! Was the craft place a local one, or a big box chain craft store?

I think you might enjoy this plate, where somehow I cultured Serratia marcescens on a control plate. I was experimenting with a new recipe using up some old almold protein powder and this one pour contained this. I do two other recipe pours right after these and three plates contained this on only that almond recipe pour, and the other two seperat recipe pours were 0% contam. on any plate in the pour. Its straight up brutal looking!

Yeah it looks like blood!!

Its a gram-negative opportunistic human pathogen, I am sure I could just transfer it with a swab if I wanted to selectively grow it out...but apparently there are strains of this stuff that are antibiotic resistant

Okay cool!! Maybe I'll go check out my local hobby lobby tomorrow and see If they have something like what you purchased!!

Yuuup same.....I am like I am just going to keep this sealed and photograph it under a scope and a camera macro lense and then dispose of it somehow. I dont know but it feels like a cultivating contam WIN haha 🤣

I used red food coloring in my first grain water plates a few days ago. Does mycelium break it down? Look at this weird shit.

Multiple red dyed plates went clear right where the mycelium is growing most.

It’s not very clear in focus but it looks maybe like contamination?

Yeah the mycelium will eat the dye over time

Has anyone has bacteria on their agar lids that look like condensation? I thought it was Condensation but it's like it doesn't sparkle/shine like water droplets do.

This doesn't sound like anything I have seen/had, but it would be helpful if you would post photos.

Low nutrients keeps the mycelium hungry, aggressive, and in search of food. In return, faster, rhizomorphic growth. I’ve been using one recipe lately across the board that I’m liking.

500ml H2O
9.5g Agar
6.3g LME
.3g peptone
.3g yeast
1g honey

There’s other tricks to it as well, like taking colonized grain back to agar. I’ve also recently noticed charcoal plates helping some cultures to get ropey as well if they didn’t want to before. There’s also going to be some cultures that you’ll never get to go rhizo as well.. little bastards lol.

My star and heart plates looking cool today lol

Oh also posted my rose galaxy plate I poured in another thread the other day. I’m in love with this plate

I'm gonna try this recipe
