A plate from that time I tried to save a culture from a mold filled grain jar:

After taking clean transfers I kept this plate just for shits and giggles to see what would happen.  Here it is 2 weeks later:

Yeah, natalensis DGAF!

To me, that's just the beauty of agar more than some resilience

Does this look ok to everyone here? I know it may seem like a silly question but im used to my plates always being absolutely 100% round and symetrical. This culture keeps doing stuff like this.

I would confidently take that to grain.

You're looking at sectoring

Its supposed to be an isolate. Thought isolates dont sector?

Why do you believe it to be an isolate? It isn’t

Someone traded me a culture called ape g2. I asked about it and they said it was an isolate given to them. Ive never worked with an isolate before. The culture does indeed seem different.

Unless I’m getting my terms wrong, that is probably just a clone. I label my clones by G, or generation removed from multispore. A G2 in my op is a clone of a clone. But that’s not an isolate. You can see clear sectoring on that plate.

It is semantics and I would say you are both right.  When you clone a fruit for traits that you like it is called isolation.  Also, transferring a mycelial culture down to a single sector mycelial culture is isolating mycelium.

Maybe I’m conflating “isolate” and “monoculture”

Im only relaying what was told to me. I really dont know one way or another. All I really know for sure is that spores + agar + bird seed + coconut + time = mushrooms.

He is right.  He is conflating “isolate” with “monoculture”, and, get ready for this, a monoculture is an isolate.  Confused yet?  LOL.

You gotta put the spores on seaweed. Then you put the seaweed in bird seed. Then you put the bird seed in coconut. Then you let a robot breathe hot air on the fruits. Then you hide that in a jar.

you could try a tub with grain inoculated with the mycelium from 6 to 12 o'clock and another tub with the sector from 2 to 4 o'clock, that's what I did with the last Semps and they were distinct in timing and pheno... and I saved a week in one more transfer for each sector

Even a monoculture can throw mutations from time to time

Can anyone tell me what is going on this plate? This is from a LC I am testing. I just squirted a little out on to a loop and streaked it. Now I have this crazy growth, not sure what it is. LC was JMF is that means anything. Still very new, and wasn’t sure how to search(describe) for this.

I’m also new but it looks pretty good to me, id take a transfer from the center colony on the 8 o’clock ish position.

I just haven’t had any of my other plates to grow the spikes like tree branches, so wasn’t sure if that was good or not. It’s hard to tell in the picture, but the branches are growing off the surface of the agar

Thats not any type of growth I have come across personally. Given JMF is a renamed regular cube I would do a new test.

Nothing there I would try to transfer

Squirt out a little bit of the LC to the point where you can control a single drop and then do 2 drops per plate with no loop and see how those grow out

Well definitely listen to him LOL. I have seen a couple plates with some cool looking spikes but now that you mention it, never quite that spikey per se.

I wasn’t going to transfer, I have other plates that look good, just trying to figure out what it is. I buried it out back and when I opened it, it did smell mushroomey, but I am not the best judge.
