i inoculated these agar plated only two days ago with spores. i checked in on them not really expecting to see anything. a contamination check more then anything. this is what i saw. the growth is white, but it is creamy not cottony or feathery like the growth in my BRF jars. is this normal for agar or did i mess up somewhere??

Do you have a flow hood? It could be contamination.

Agreed. Better luck next time. You also need to wrap the dishes with parafilm after the agar sets up, or slip them back into the sleeve they came out of. Petri dish lids just sit on the dish without making a seal. RR

hmmmm i don't have any parafilm. this is my first run in with con tams, and my first time playing with agar. those petri dished seem to just be waiting to invite problems. here is my thought, what if i used canning jars with inject port and filter disc to pour in fresh sterilized agar instead of the dish. then wait a few days to see if there is any unwanted growth. if not call it good and go from there. that flow hood thing is starting to sound like a good idea as well.

if you dont have parafilm you can use micropore tape or glad clingwrap, you'll most definately need a good flowhood or glovebox to make use of agar

Jars are horrible for agar. Just get parafilm, glad wrap or micropore tape to seal the edges. They're made that way to breath. You want your cultures to grow very fast on agar so you can make transfers quickly to isolate strains while they're rapidly growing. That's why you want lots of gas exchange with a petri dish. A small petri dish of mycelium wants more air exchange than a full quart of grains. Remember, you don't use agar to expand the mycelium. It's used for germination and strain isolation, and isolation away from contaminants if any are found. Just wrap your micropore tape all the way around the dish to seal the gap. RR
