I dunno what the fuck he says. The guy can talk for 40 minutes without saying anything. I used to watch him and it was extremely difficult to wade through all his word salad.
I even showed Willy to my dumbass flat-earther cousin and he became really obsessed with growing "free" mushrooms. At some point he couldn't find verm so tried replacing it with gravel :shrug:

It's probably been mentioned in this thread already but, dear Willy says Presto PC's can't sterilize grain because they have a gasket. He claims the gasket prevents the PC from reaching 15psi. Therefore, when his followers ask him why their grain is contaminated, he tells them to buy a better PC that doesn't use a gasket.
WTF? Is he really that stupid?

This whole time I thought gaskets were for sealing two surfaces together. Why do they put these worthless things under the heads in cars seems how they don't hold pressure in!?

Just for shits and giggles I did a quick search for studies related to mushrooms and gypsum & calcium... came up with these. Paper-1 Paper-2

Granted they're using Pleurotus and not Psilocybe for the experiment, but I found the results interesting nonetheless. 

TL;DR - unless you're growing gourmet shrooms and want slightly bigger caps and slightly higher vitamin D2 levels there's no real benefit adding gypsum or some other calcium supplement - in fact levels higher than 5% run the risk of diminishing yields and at 10% or greater have a noticeable negative impact on yields.

So even outside of growing psychedelic shrooms, researchers find adding moar =/=

This is like reading a book about wild bobcats then feeding your house cat the same diet because they're both cats.

Agreed, I wouldn't try to transfer this knowledge even from oysters to shiitake - it's not specie appropriate per se until I see a paper or study saying the same info holds true for both. If only I could find a University Agricultural Publication saying to add it in small quantities for shiitake substrate as well, I'd trust they're working off good info. *sigh*  I'm just curious if this is a mushroom growing generalization in this case or more of a specie specific phenomena.

Sure bobcats and housecats wont have exactly the same diet, but you can't deny that you're fundamentally dealing with meat eating felines in both cases and there will be some commonalities.  Just like psilocybes and pleurotus are different genera, they are both gilled mushrooms that benefit from high humidity and airflow at certain stages of their development, because... mushrooms :shrug: 

Considering how people are shitting on Willy here for advocating moar gypsum = better like its common knowledge it is bad practice, and we know from these sources that for oysters at least moar =/= better I was just noting that it's interesting how sentiments/anecdotes in the hobby community and research in the academic community seemed to broadly align here...  Is this a commonality among gilled mushroom growing or a specie specific thing?  Only time will tell once we get papers exploring this same experimental setup with cubensis or some other psilocybin species.  If you know of any I'd be more than happy to read them and revise my thinking here if their data says otherwise.

Calcium is great for fruit forming mushrooms, however, Pleurotus species are fruited from 10+lb supplemented sawdust blocks. They're supplemented with things like gypsum because farmers only use enough grainspawn to get things started, usually around 8oz.

We don't supplement our substrates because we over supplement with 4+lbs of grain spawn.

It was just an analogy. The actual distance between psilocybes and other genera of gilled mushrooms is actually much greater than between two species of cat. Both genetically and in terms of evolutionary history/ecological niche.

As mentioned, we already massively over-feed psilocybes with our current cultivation practices. Though that probably does mimic their natural environment pretty well, where environmental conditions and competitor species probably kill a colony long before it's actually exhausted the nutrients in its pile of fresh poo.

But the main thing is, our objective is completely different. And the thing we're actually interested in- total yield of psychoactives- appears to be almost entirely determined by genetics, then cultivation practices. Supplements and nutritional tweaks don't really do anything in that regard.

Try adopting cubensis cultivation practices to panaeolus or zapotecorum. Mushrooms species are often very different from one another.

The same is true for gourmet species. Try running shiitake on masters mix alongside pink oysters. Shiitake will not perform well on masters mix, neiter do pinks , they both prefer different temperatures, and different supplementation.

We have to research and adapt our environments and supplementation to each speacies.
