Wise/Unwise: Sealing Myco-Bag Question
    #540294 - 02/04/02 01:29 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

Hey,

So I have some empty myco-bags (or whatever the term for an unfilled bag would be) and some colonized jars. I'm think of just tranplanting some of the jars into a few myco-bags and fruiting them there. Now, I planning on dunking first, then breaking up the cakes (probably about 3-4 to a bag), then sealing up the bag and take it from there.

Here's my problem though...I searched ALL OVER TOWN the last two days trying to find an impulse sealor. I checked kmart, Staples, Office Depot, Office Max and a kitcehn supply store....No luck! So, I'm either going to buy an impulse sealor online (but honestly, I don't want to wait another week for everything to get delievered) OR I'm just going to try and seal the bag myself. So here are my questions:

1.) Where should I be looking if I want to buy an impulse sealor? I figured they were either a kitchen or office supply.

2.) Would it be possible for me to seal up a myco-bag using duct tape or clear masking/packing tape?

Logically, I can't exactly see why I SHOULDN'T be able to use tape to seal the bag (provided I make sure it has a good seal...But of course, why pass up a great reference place like the Shroomery to get advice. Thanks!

Taping should be fine. The risk of contamination is much lower after the substrate is fully colonized and you will probably introduce some minor amounts of bacteria and mold spores when you transfer anyway. I'd use the clear packaging tape over duct tape. It sticks real good and doesn't block the light. I don't see why this shouldn't work, just try to make the transfer as cleanly as possible. Report back with the results.

Yo,

Sweet. I just birthed my jars and they are currently being dunked...I'll probably make the transfer over to the bags tomorrow. I have 4 different strains going rigth now, but I'm going to bag-up the Lipa Yai jars I have going (they colonized like lightning!). Oh yeah, and good news, I have a digicam to take some pictures with! Results...soon!
