:whathesaid:

i've noticed a huge variety in how my myc can look too. i've also had plates that looked normal, but after a transfer they got more erratic. i got so used to seeing pure agar porn that i just kept assuming it had to be contams, but some cultures really do just grow kinda funky i think. also, i know nutrients play a huge part in how a culture behaves on agar, so if you've switched recipes recently that can make stuff look different than you might be used to. i'm assuming you've used a consistent one, though, & like nef said sometimes cultures are just weird. personally i'd take another transfer from those rhizomorphic sections just to see but i think most of them, aside from 3, would probably be fine to run. maybe more experienced eyes will give you a more insightful answer, but there are definitely cultivators on this site that would send most of those plates to grain

hey guys i read through a couple (40-50) pages and still cant determine if these are all just bacterial or myc. (although i know its not rhizomorphic myc lol). the tampanensis cup definitely smelled like tampanensis when i made the transfer. i was wondering if i could get some experienced opinions if yall dont mind : ) and very many thanks.

this is hopefully p.tampanensis myc. the agar was originally blue but i guess whatever it is has grown down into it and turned it yellow/orange. first pic is 4 days after scraping spores from a print.

this is it 6 days later

these were from some wild p.caerulescens prints. (2 different plates) and yes i know whatevers on the left side of first pic is BAD

and this is the one cube plate

all plates were made with sliced potatoes, but i cant remember if i used honey or corn syrup or karo or a combination of them. its the best i could do with my phone i even tried using a magnifying glass, i understand if theyre un-discernable

I am just about ready to make new jars and this is the myc I plan to work with.  The last jars I made, the oats were too wet, so these will be replacements.

The PE is growing oddly - both plates are growing out as a triangle.  The plate they came from grew in a circular pattern.  Odd.

Are there any of these that look suspicious?

The PE plates also seem to have a “halo” on the outter edge of the myc, all the way around whereas the other plates do not.  Is this a sign of bacteria?

I don't like the bottom right B+ and the top left B+ is suspicious but I'd definitely move forward with it. Also, the halo on your PE is totally normal - it happens pretty regularly across a wide range of varieties and species. Otherwise I'd give everything the green light!

I recently switched to un-modded lids for my no-pour agar jars, and didn't use any aluminum foil to cover the lids since the foil wasn't needed to keep water out of the jar. (During the PCer run.) I found that entire batch had excessive condensation, to the point that there was some water rolling around on the agar. (And helping to transport potential contams.)

I hypothesized that the lack of foil on the plastic lids was the reason for the excess condensation, so I made another batch of agar. This time I made lid covers that were 4 layers thick, instead of the more common 2 layers. None of the agar jars from the last batch had excessive condensation, only the normal amount on the sides, and not enough to drip down and set on the agar.

I think the foil acts as an insulator and helps prevent the condensation from occurring on the lid. So while the aluminum foil covers aren't necessary for un-modded lids, they still play a role in insulating the plastic lids, which can result in less condensation.

I September, I had a fully colonized plate I decided not to use because the myc looked translucent - almost like if it grew through the agar instead of only on top of it.

Almost 2 months later, that plate being very weird.

No backlight

Can someone enlighten me?
