The message is absurd. Trudeau is currently the leader of a minority parliamentary gov't - he can't do anything unilaterally, which is kinda one of the cornerstones of dictatorships. You can be critical of the Canadian gov't without veering into the absurd.

Giving background information on the messengers contextualizes that absurdity in a way I find amusing - thus the satire article - but the message was never not absurd. Comparing Trudeau to the likes of Nicolae Ceaușescu is absurd. Calling Canada a dictatorship is absurd.

Had Trudeau got his enabling act extended the other month you and the rest of the legion would still be on here telling us why it was all justified. And nobody called Canada a dictatorship, Christian Terhes -whose speech was not recent- said Trudeau was behaving like a dictator.

Forcing vaccine mandates upon people and having protesters beaten up and trampled by the police for peacefully protesting these mandates, freezing their bank accounts and enacting emergency powers in a time when there was patently no national emergency or mortal threat to Candanians, basically because there was a photograph somewhere of a Nazi flag (guy in a balaclava who was ejected from the protest) does not sound dictatorial to you? No Canada is not presently a dictatorship, but that does not mean Trudeau is/was not behaving like a dictator. Canada came terrfyingly close to becoming a dictatorship.

Talk to plants not cops? Ah so you're actually on our side!

If a series of hypotheticals happened where Trudeau became a dictator...

But that's not what happened:

Forcing vaccine mandates upon people - legislation was debated and voted on, by a government which had won a recent democratic election that specifically focused on this issue. In such circumstances, forcing a minority opinion on the country would be closer to dictatorial than what happened.

Having protesters beaten up and trampled by the police for peacefully protesting these mandates - happens everywhere in the world where police are used to suppress protest, an example of authoritarian power not unique to dictatorships.

Freezing their bank accounts and enacting emergency powers in a time when there was patently no national emergency or mortal threat to Candanians - that's your assessment, but considering you reduce the context to 'a photograph of a nazi' I doubt your proficiency here. Even so, this decision was voted on within the required seven day window, was not extended beyond its initial scope, and is currently undergoing several court challenges. Gov't exercising authoritarian power doesn't make a dictatorship - autocratic decision-making is a necessary ingredient missing from this situation.

"And nobody called Canada a dictatorship," but also "Canada came terrfyingly close to becoming a dictatorship."

As I said, absurd.

- The meaning of ANARCHIST is a person who rebels against any authority, established order, or ruling power.

On the one hand Shivas Wisdom you proclaim yourself to be an anarchist but on the other seem to spend all day every day defending the likes of Justin Trudeau and his/their policies while directly or indirectly denigrating and attacking those who do oppose him?

When you say you are an anarchist, how exactly can that be when all of your political opinions seem to be in lockstep with the likes of Trudeau and you will even go so far as to smear and write out propagandist denunciations listing all those (EU members) who dared to oppose him/them?

Do you support the likes of Trudeau because you believe they like you are anarchist (you might be right in a sense) and support the Build back better/great reset agenda, hoping these sick maniacs will crash the whole system (very possible with the way things are going)?

There seems to be a disconnect between your shroomery persona and your actual political opinions. Talk to plants not cops, Shivas wisdom, anarchist. On the surface it seems to imply you are just another anti-establishment shroomery hippy, and yet the things you say each and every day makes you sound and seem to me very much pro-establishment.

So, by describing yourself as an anarchist? What does that actually mean substantively/politically?

Does it follow that I reject all authority? Far from me such a thought. In the matter of boots, I refer to the authority of the bootmaker; concerning houses, canals, or railroads, I consult that of the architect or the engineer. For such or such special knowledge I apply to such or such a savant. But I allow neither the bootmaker nor the architect nor the savant to impose his authority upon me. I listen to them freely and with all the respect merited by their intelligence, their character, their knowledge, reserving always my incontestable right of criticism and censure. I do not content myself with consulting a single authority in any special branch; I consult several; I compare their opinions, and choose that which seems to me the soundest. But I recognise no infallible authority, even in special questions; consequently, whatever respect I may have for the honesty and the sincerity of such or such an individual, I have no absolute faith in any person. Such a faith would be fatal to my reason, to my liberty, and even to the success of my undertakings; it would immediately transform me into a stupid slave, an instrument of the will and interests of others.

If I bow before the authority of the specialists and avow my readiness to follow, to a certain extent and as long as may seem to me necessary, their indications and even their directions, it is because their authority is imposed on me by no one, neither by men nor by God. Otherwise I would repel them with horror, and bid the devil take their counsels, their directions, and their services, certain that they would make me pay, by the loss of my liberty and self-respect, for such scraps of truth, wrapped in a multitude of lies, as they might give me.

I bow before the authority of special men because it is imposed on me by my own reason. I am conscious of my own inability to grasp, in all its detail, and positive development, any very large portion of human knowledge. The greatest intelligence would not be equal to a comprehension of the whole. Thence results, for science as well as for industry, the necessity of the division and association of labour. I receive and I give - such is human life. Each directs and is directed in his turn. Therefore there is no fixed and constant authority, but a continual exchange of mutual, temporary, and, above all, voluntary authority and subordination.

This same reason forbids me, then, to recognise a fixed, constant and universal authority, because there is no universal man, no man capable of grasping in all that wealth of detail, without which the application of science to life is impossible, all the sciences, all the branches of social life. And if such universality could ever be realised in a single man, and if he wished to take advantage thereof to impose his authority upon us, it would be necessary to drive this man out of society, because his authority would inevitably reduce all the others to slavery and imbecility.

Lumping the DC convoy in with the Canadian one.

https://www.washingtonian.com/2022/03/28/trucker-convoy-will-leave-dc-without-accomplishing-anything/

Quote:
The “People’s Convoy” that’s been parked in Hagerstown for weeks will finally leave the Washington region alone, Zachary Petrizzo reported for the Daily Beast Sunday night. Its numbers had dwindled, authorities mostly prevented them from causing any substantial havoc in DC itself, and it was never clear what they hoped to accomplish besides annoying area residents. Locals flipped them off on the highway, yelled at them to go home, and in one case brought an expedition into DC to a crawl by using only a single bicycle. As they got more frustrated with their directionless protest, some convoy participants reportedly got violent; others complained that by closing exits on the highway, authorities were causing them to pee in their pants.

First - sharing youtube videos in lieu of an actual opinion is one of my major petpeeves. It's not an easily accessible approach to anyone without a solid internet connection. I consider it the modern day equivalent of 'read this book if you want to participate in this discussion'.

Second - calling Bill C-11 (An Act to amend the Broadcasting Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts) by the fake name "Canada's Internet Censorship Bill" strikes me as a similar tactic to the ol' Obamacare fiasco - the content itself isn't nearly as scary as the emotional reaction caused by the fake name. Read the whole thing here, and you'll see it's just a bill aligning modern internet media with pre-existing Canadian regulation for legacy media. Hardly nepharious.

Does anyone remember the cries of doom that surrounded Jordan Peterson's fight against Bill C-16 and compelled speech - well, that bill passed in 2017 and none of the fear mongering predictions proved true. This is just an extension of that fruitless conspiracy theory. These laws that regulate expression in Canada have already existed for decades - these bills don't introduce radically new concepts, they're intended to update them as society progresses. I would have though that the reality of Bill C-16 after it passed would have put this to rest, but clearly gov't censorship is still a hot button issue for pulling in those sweet sweet video views.

Let's examine the criticism of Bill C-11 a bit closer now:

“The bill wants to force social and other online platforms to artificially prioritize certain categories of content[...]“

Guess what! Canada has done this for decades.

"The main criticism the bill has faced from a flurry of free speech advocates of various ideological and political persuasions is that the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications (CRCT), a broadcasting and telecommunications regulatory agency, will now serve as a government tool to “regulate” the internet as well, and fairly explicitly, ending the era of the open internet in Canada."

This is the main criticism? That the CRCT will expand its operation to include new communications technologies. Hardly earth-shattering. And that parting shot about the end of an era? That already came to pass years ago when corporations centralized the internet into a half-dozen massively profitable ventures. Acting like this bill is the final nail is fearmongering with the goal (I assume) of driving up views, engagement, and donations.

I may not trust my government, but I trust capitalist corporations or hyperbolic youtube grifters even less.

Of course, I highly suspect that an individual who considers a Russian law that criminalizes expression - to the extent that using 'war' or 'invasion' instead of 'special military operation' now risks up to 15 years imprisonment - as good censorship that prohibits the intentional spreading of disinformation, might not be as philosophically opposed to censorship as they pretend.

It certainly has gotten a LOT of criticism from many sources.

A Canadian bill isn't important enough for me to thoroughly research, although some of the criticisms come from groups I think I can trust, like Open Media.

I notice you just did what you accused me of - misrepresenting the law.  The law criminalizes deliberately spreading fake news.  I was unable to find the text of the law, but I doubt someone who uses the term "invasion" would go to prison for 15 years.  As I've said before, most prison terms in Russia are less than they are in the United States.

If it's not important for you to look into, you shouldn't be blindly sharing unverified information.

Here's a simple question: does the Russian state consider using 'invasion', 'war', or 'attack' - instead of the term 'special military operation' - to be deliberate misinformation?

I took the time to check out your link just now. Bill designations like 'C-11' are reused for different parliamentary sessions, and the results of your google search are overwhelmingly for criticism of a different Bill C-11 - "An Act to enact the Consumer Privacy Protection Act and the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts."

I'm happy to continue this discussion, if you can only decide which Bill C-11 you're upset about.

Until then - if it's not important enough for you to look into, you shouldn't be blindly sharing unverified information.

Again, several organizations I trust criticized the bill, and I gave an Open Media link.  But ok, I'll back off on this particular bill since I don't feel like studying it.  But censorship in general has gotten pretty out of control, as I previously explained.

shivas.wisdom said:

As I said, I couldn't find the actual text of the law.  The site containing the most information I could find on it is Pravda:
Quote:
The dissemination of knowingly false information about the Russian Armed Forces under the guise of reliable reports is punishable by a fine of 700,000 rubles ($6,400) to 1.5 million rubles ($13,600) or imprisonment for up to three years.

In the event it is established that such fake news was spread by officials or a group of individuals, who created artificial evidence to substantiate their point of view, the punishment for such offences will vary from five to ten years in prison.

In the event that deliberately false information has led to grave consequences, a punishment from ten to fifteen years in prison is provided.

So I don't think using the term 'invasion' would get anyone in trouble.  That's my guess.

And they actually give a decent critique of the legislation in question - but if you read it as well, you will have noticed that 'censorship' was not used once in the article. They talk about the grey distinction between user-generated vs professional internet content - that it won't prevent manipulative algorithms - and a more philosophical query into what 'Canadian content guidelines' should look like in the 21st century.

Compare that to Russel Brand's "We Told You - Canada’s internet censorship bill is a major threat to free speech online" approach with copious links to websites that bombard you with "If you're tired of censorship, cancel culture, and the erosion of civil liberties subscribe to Reclaim The Net" messages.

I read it.  That was from 26 Feb, before the law in question was passed.

It mentions an administrative fine up to $60,000, but no jail time.  If that's what you meant, then I agree.  I thought you were referring to the new law about 15 years in prison for intentionally spreading fake news.
