You are right, it does have some small amounts of nutrients in it, because if its left out, occasionally mold will grow on it, but not well at all.

In one of the threads I linked above, a guy goes as far as to suggest there is enough nutrition, its just that we havent figured out fully the field capacity of pure coir substrates, and that "there is enough nutrition for mushrooms" but not for plants. At any rate, messing with this is way beyond my pay grade, so I will just mix in potato starch with these 3 jars.

Semi-nutritious, semi-growing. It's prone to failure at best.

I've never heard of mixing potato starch in with coir....I guess it could work, hopefully you've found a good, proven tek with it.  I don't see why it couldnt work, as long as its PC'd and has an adequate filter.  What kind of filter are you running on your jars, meculpo

My friend, why do you insist on making things hard for yourself? I've said it over and over, if you ask us about how to proceed BEFORE proceeding.... we can help. You seem to be hell bent on not following any standard advice.

on another note, i am glad to see you doing a little better in the SAB.

Okay, I will be receptive and obedient. I have since the last court martial of my growing been 90% sticking to making pf tek jars and agar jars, I have 35 of them now on the last count.

What do you want me to focus on, if you could choose, other than this?

Coir, which I have purchased, and will have to be using in the later stage, seemed like a good idea to learn more about.

To get a feel for things, I need to work with the materials. I have never ever in my life ever touched or used Coir for anything. So I dont see making 3 jars of coir/potato as a takeoff from that, which I suspect people would not criticize if it was BRF?

When people correct me or my actions, its very helpful if you explain why you are saying things. How can I magically know that theres a huge difference between potato flour, and rice flour, when both are used as nutrition in Agar?

By doing this, I learned and gained physical experience about coir field capacity and how much it expands - When Natural pointed out that pure coir was fail, i cross-referenced it, stopped the process, and redid it to my best of knowledge.

You have to give me more homework, Verum!

You need to look into making filters for your brf jars.  When you pc a brf jar, (which you could stand to fill those jars up more instead of that little bit, if thats what i'm seeing in the pic)  You should make a filter in the lid so that when the agar wedge is beggining to expand into the brf, it will be able to exchange gases and not build up in the jar.

There are many teks on it, search for lid tek

Edit - **BEFORE you pc the brf jar**

You're kind of just blurring definitions/applications for things. You should try to comprehend the difference between what can be used for spawn production and what can be used as a substrate. Sometimes those definitions do blur a little bit, but the methods that people have worked out for others to follow generally adhere to those principles.
This is the reason people (especially verum) are trying to keep your focus simply on  processes that are proven effective - because you misuse the information that you don't fully comprehend. Once you know the effective process, then you can go into the theory.
It's truly in your best interest if your end game is successful cultivation.

I suggest you go out and buy some 2-4oz (1/4-1/2 pint)mason jars and use those instead of the salvaged stuff, at least until you get the hang of things. Shallower jars will be easier to use for agar. And you want jars that have straight or outsloping walls for pf tek, so the cake can be birthed.

Get those and some polyfil for making air exchange filters, its sold at crafting/quilting stores or buy a cheap polyester pillow and cut it open, drill or punch 1/4-3/8 inch holes in your jad lids and cram the polyfil as tight as you can. These can be used for brf cakes, agar or grains, they will need to be covered in foil during the pressure cooking cycle

Continue practicing in the still air box, transfer some of the more organized looking growth from that nice white fluffy one you got going, try and take as small of pieces as possible to the center of a new agar plate, then let it grow out to the size of a quarter or bigger and take a couple tiny pieceS of the edges where it looks pretty and organized to new plates. At that point you will probably be ready for grains again, or making liquid culture/inoculant.

I didn't sign up to assign homework. I'm simply here to offer helpful advice and have stated my willingness to do so, over and over, IF you ask before you make your next move.

I'm still not convinced you have any clean myc and would not advise moving on until you do. Your makeshift PF tek may work but why in the world would you go out of your way to avoid using proven teks? If you plan on trying to fruit something I'd recommend the PF tek but i don't think you're there yet. Do you have clean innoculant? Let's see it.

I don't see anything there that i would consider clean. The first and fourth pic look like your closest shots.

I'm down for drinking the cool aide and hailing mary and all but... I just think you are making more work for yourself and could avoid a lot of trouble by posting questions before making moves, waiting for answers from experts and then following their advice. But, by all means, think for yourself. I don't want obedience at all. You do you, boo.

Also, i really like that "birds aren't real" sign.

I can always be dissapointed and filled with regret later, but right now Im taking in the joy, because that shit turns blue if you bruise it, and except one single jar in those pictures, and the pictures are shitty and bad and make it hard to make a call, the rest are CLEAN by visual inspection. Which maybe still doesnt say it all since it's ME doing the observations.

But think of all the contaminations I have had by now: green mold, red mold, grey mold, 4-6 different types of bacteria. Just in this thread. And today, I had my first yeast infection in a PF tek type jar. The shit was grey and smelled like nasty wine/green apples.

the only thing Ive been learning for 3 months is contaminations
im saying they are to the naked eye, clean. thats pretty good for agar, and pretty good for me

If you get red mold look out there's some nasty stuff that turns red that can really mess you up. Fusarium is one and I can't remember the other right now. One of the two is worse than black mold. I had one of each but I never saw either again. When I looked it up it said it can germinateth in the respiratory system.

Aint no reds left now, only seeing bac or mold when a transfer these days, but back in a fewpages I had 1~2 dishes with red looking bac, but not mold. What u think of the jar?

What did you inoculate the jar with - an agar transfer?

You should focus on trying to get a culture on agar that is clean and consistent for multiple transfers before messing with any other jars.  Take it one step at a time before moving on.
