LC to Straight Coir --- Thoughts????
    #11764186 -

Hey there...I'm sitting here staring at TONS of LC, but am feeling wayyyy too lazy to sterilize some grain, etc.

Has anyone ever thought of/tried/documented just throwing some LC straight onto coir??

Anybody have any thoughts as to why this wouldnt work?

It doesn't work well. But it's a fun experiment.

In theory this should work.  All signs point to yes.

But,

unless there is a grain present to be colonized, most mycelium just wont spread, possibly due to lack of inoculation points, or the fact that its not nutritional.

you need to add some sort of grain for the mycelium to work its way to. Think connect the dots. Anyways you'll need to pressure cook it anyways so might as well just sterilize some grain so you don't risk failure.

Search "spawn bags" in the search function and you should find some good recipes for substrate.

Yes, as Dbb5 stated above, grain is a must for healthy, fast, potent mush.  Coir is just an additive for bulk to give it correct texture and water content.  My mycelium has yet to colonize any coir,  but it works great for a case

I have fruited coir/coffee that I shot with LC. It's completely possible. But it doesn't work well.
I think I got two fruits, maybe three. Printable caps, regular size mushrooms. But not many.
Gypsum might help.

This has been discussed and tried many times.

Most times this fails to colonize before contams set in.  This is because coir (like most bulk substrates) is usually not nutritious enough to colonize quickly enough, even in jars, before contams finally set in.  You can help this by supplementing the coir with compost, castings, manure and/or coffee.

Properly prepared grains will colonize faster than most properly prepared bulk substrates given the same amount of LC.  The spawn grains then also act to diversify the overall nutritional balance of the substrate, so when it comes time to fruit, you get better yields.

Yes, you can get it to work, sometimes.  But even if you do, you will probably be disappointed by the yield.

Coir is nutritious. Quit using it as a casing, mycelium will colonize on it.

When using coir as a casing it is pretty much just adding another layer of substrate. A more suitable casing would be verm or peatmoss or a combination of both.

you have 100+ posts and still think coir isn't nutritional?

That is why I wish people would try late casing. Just wait until pins form then case it with coir.  Here's my pure coir grow.

Coir is nutritious. It's not too much for plants, but for mushrooms it is.

The problem with pure coir is probably it's density.
Since mushrooms need a lot of water to grow, you need a substrate that provides both: water and nutrients.
As soon as you enrich coir with an amount of water that would be enough for your mushrooms to grow, it gets dense. This again makes it harder for the mycelium to grow through it, increasing the chance for contams, because it takes so long.
In addition, it appeared to me, that pure coir tends to store water not as good as verm for example.
The times I tried it, plenty of water ran through the coir and formed little pools on the bottom of the jars, providing perfect conditions for contams.

This is at least my theory about my failed tries on pure coir cakes. Now, this doesn't mean it can't work.
I've tried it three times, with different amounts of water. All three jars took ages to colonize. Two of them suffered from contams, the third one stalled.
