50/50 vs Straight

I was wondering what the benefits of casing with 50/50 (vermiculite/peat moss) is over just casing with vermiculite. I've grown with cakes many times but have now decided to try my first casings. Thanks.

Wrong. A casing layer is supposed to be a non-nutrional layer. This prevents a lot of contams from making home etc. Use straight coir (or you can use both verm and coir) It works a charm everytime. Ive had better results using coir then using 50/50. Also, Mica doesnt not contain nutrients. Its a mineral. It's heated until all the moisture is out thus making it puffy looking..making vermiculite.

Yes...the main disadvantage would be that with straight verm the casing layer tends to be more closed and harder for the mycelium to penetrate.

Straight coir works awesome and is easy to get and even easier to prepare than 50/50.

Some add a little verm to the coir to help it hold water better.

A casing layer should be filled with little peaks and valleys and somewhat open so the mycelium can run through it easily.
