Casing with only vermiculite
    #849478 -

Just curious, but I've read the "easy casing FAQ" or whatever and they talk about just using vermicultite. I know this will work, but I'm wondering if it's worth it.

Is there a point to casing with vermiculite instead of just leaving them as cakes, I mean should I notice more fruits, etc?

The reason i case is to create larger more even fruits. The casing isn't intended to give more. There's no nutrients in it. What is it your trying to do?

by casing with whatever, the mycelium draws moisture from the casing and it does not have as much surface area exposed to the air thus keeping itself moister. since mushies are mostly water, this is ideal for larger and more fruits.
yes it is worth it.

I would recommend using 50/50+ over straight verm. I recently did an experiment using both. I had much better results with the 50/50. Use spagnum peat moss as opposed to straight peat in the mix. Good luck.

I like 50/50+, but I've also used pure vermiculite casings. In my opinion, the most glaring difference between the two would be the ease of visually determining moisture content in the casing layer. Peat moss turns a lighter color as it drys whereas vermiculite looks pretty close to the same.
