******Coco Coir comment and question******
    #2268526 -

So I  FINALY found a store that sells coco coir! They just started selling it recently.

Anyway. Id like to know your opinion. ( :alert:preferably opinions from people who are adept at using coco coir :alert:)

:mushroom2:Question #1:   Id like to ask if I could replace the peat-moss portion of 50/50+ mix with the coco coir? Or are there better recipies? The coco coir reminds me alot of  peat-moss texture wise/consistancy wise.

:mushroom2:Question #2 Also, hows the PH of Coco coir? The same as peatmoss pretty much?

Ok, ok, I admit that I can be lazy too sometimes. :smirk: Its not that there isnt enough information on everything, I just find it overwhelming with all the information that I get flooded with when punching in a key word in the faq page  :nonono:

:mushroom2: :sun:SO,  Question #3  Id like to know a simple but effective recipe using coco coir.

PS: You dont have to answer all 3 questions if you dont know the answers to all, if you can only answer 1 or 2, thats cool too:)

Thanks.

1. yes and you probably won't need to adjust ph like peat
2. I don't know, but I assume it to be pretty neutral, because I don't know of anyone adjusting the ph of their coir like with peat.
3. just mix it 60/40 verm/coir

So something like 6 cups of verm with 4 cups of coir? Im guessing you just add water the same as yoiu do with most other recipies...just enough untill you can barely queeze a drop out of?....

Thanks,

any more opinions/recipies?

Coir is nuteral in PH. One of the reason the hydro growers use it.

Neutral huh? Well thats interesting.

Im planning on doing  Coco coir, Verm, oyster shell, touch of soil sweetener (lime) ..not too much of the lime, very very little. And of course, water....cook it at 15psi for an hour.....

what you think of that, should work hey? Ive always used this recipie.  Im just wondering if replacing peat with coco coir really even makes that big of a diff? Is it more ariable?  :smirk:

I'm not posotive so dont quote me but I dont think that Coco Coir needs to be sterilized, I personally have never ever sterilized it and I've had 100% sucess every time, just use tap water or bottled water or just boil well water if thats what you have. I'm not sure about all those things that you have listed as add-ins to your mix but I was under the impression that they adjusted the PH level to some degree and since Coco has a nuetral PH all that other stuff might have no real benefits. As for weather or not Coir is better than Peat, i've used both on casings and have done some w/o casing layers all toghether and I have to say that my coir shrooms get to be pretty massive so i would have to say that coir holds more water than peat in the long run and IMO is better. Best of luck.

coir is very much like peat moss, the most important difference being the pH. coir is only very slightly acidic. you won't need to adjust the pH like with peatmoss.

Question #2 Also, hows the PH of Coco coir? The same as peatmoss pretty much?

only very slightly acidic.

Question #3 Id like to know a simple but effective recipe using coco coir.

you can use straight coir. you can mix it with vermiculite. i usually use it by itself with a little crushed oyster shell in there to buffer against the acidity of fungal wastes.you could just use it straight if you wanted to keep things simple.

Coir is what I always use, never tried anything else (not even strait verm) and i don't feel the need of trying something else.  A year ago, I went with coir because I wasn't able to find any PH buffer and that made me an happy man.

Most people say 60% 40% coir-verm but the ratio is so futile.  Strait verm works kinda fine. Strait coir works kinda fine.  Why bother measuring the ratio of two things that work fine by themselves.  I just mix the two. Sometimes I put more verm since coir is lacking or more coir since verm is lacking and it always work pretty fine anyway.

Now I'm faced to an important decision about acquiring some Growool since Starter is always convincing me with his new techniques

I personally like 75/25 coir/verm and no ph adjusting needed
