horse poo logs

Looking to combine horse poo into future straw log projects.  Don't believe this has been done before? 

Have always been uneasy about horse poo because it seems like pasteurizing it would make a big gooey mess that's sure to contam -- straw by itself is easy to contam if it's too wet.  Also, straw logs are generally super dense.  Is it okay to compact wet poo so much?  Will it still colonize?

Anyone want to discuss adding poo to straw logs?  Point me to a post?

I have yet to see it done in a log fashion, but maybe supplementing it with straw could turn out to be interesting. Poo is very easy and clean to pasteurize, just put it in plastic bags that can handle the temps.

Dont use much poo, you dont want to compact it at all. Straws the only substrate thats good to compact which is why you usually see those in logs and not poo.

sounds like it really wouldn't work then.

Beyond that, was thinking it would be possible to pasteurize the poo and the straw in the same laundry bag in a rubbermaid tub. Plastic bags aren't necessary right? You can just put the poo in cloth and then into hot water?

Also, it seems that poo would hold water a log better than straw. It would really have potential for between-flush log-dunking!

Yep, you can do poo or straw, in pillowcases or sealed in bags...both work. Just easier to get water content right first on poo usually.

Poo does hold water better, and contams way less then straw...which is why you should start doing poo tubs :smile:

what if you only took the solid round shit nuggets and used those for a log. do you think there would be enough structure to support a log???

The mycelium provides a very stable structure for straw logs. As in, once the log is fully colonized, the thing is quite difficult to pull apart, slice pieces off. So one would imagine it would do something similar with poo, maybe less so, because poo is not fibrous like straw. But people are saying poo can't be compacted like straw. It's too bad!

Here's another idea -- why don't people use pasteurized soil for nutrients, instead of poo? In the absence of poo...will soil do?

Soil doesnt have what you want. Its not NPK were looking for.
