Cow poo vs. Horse poo vs. Store bought poo
    #1814392 - 08/14/03 06:49 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I've really only worked with fresh cow poo...and driving 20 miles and walking 2 is getting kinda old.

What are your prefrences...if you have tried more than 1 kind of poo. And if there is any one who has tried all three kinds of poo, your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe I should get all three and do a log...

Dont know about store bought, but what gives horse dung an edge is the amount of semi-digested fiber that remains in it. Thats not to say that cow dung isnt as good, but learning to gauge moisture content is something we all learn the hard way about and horse dung is more forgiving. So far as the store bought stuff I do remember a guy doing a dirt grow indoors with some other stuff and it sure turned bright green fast so there may be a problem with contams. It would sure be interesting to do a log on the subject if you are pretty sure about the consistency of your strain. Post the results if you decide to do that for sure.

completely agree on the horse poo. It's my preferred dung of choice, usually drier, cleaner and doesn't smell as bad (Race horses anyway).

Tried store bought poo, and first time out it ended up being too wet. Scotts 3n1 worked for me though. But I still prefer grassy horse poo with a little straw and verm mixed in.

Does this post belong in advanced cultivation?? I would appreciate it if a mod would move it over there.

I have used all three. I can report that horse and cow poo resulted in much healthier mushrooms. I never really noticed a difference between cow and horse manure, but then again I never did a direct comparison. The store bought manure was just like dirt in a bag; water content was very difficult to get right compared with real poo. One strain produced horribly on the first flush (one mature mushroom), while the 2nd flush resulted in a fair amount, but a far cry from real poo collected by hand. It was used right out of the bag, a real advantage as no pasteurization was needed, but the yields could have been better. I have tried 2 other strains since then to see if any would perform better on this bagged stuff, but I still come to the conclusion that "wild" manure is best. Plus, you never know what level of decomposition the bagged manure has gone through, nor do you know if anything has been added. While it was clear that the mycelium was consuming some nutrients from the store bought stuff (mushroom production was far greater than possible from the small amount of spawn), mushroom growth was too poor to be considered acceptable, and mycelial growth through the substrate was very weak.

Manure strait from the field is what you want, but if you can?t get it, store bought manure will work. I recommend supplementing it with a greater amount of spawn (especially grain spawn) to heighten the yield potential.

cow poo, when mixed with straw works best .
horse poo is rougher so straw isn't needed . also works good, and is far easier .
store bought is  with the possable exception of zoodoo . i haven't tryed that yet, but i have heard good things about it .

Most store bought poo sucks, I've tried it. It works okay when mixed with a lot of straw, but it's probably the straw doing all of the work.

The reason why you don't see shrooms growing on horse poo in nature is because the spores germinate in the cows stomach. It doesn't mean it that it doesn't work well for cultivation. Most people do seem to prefer horse poo for indoor cultivation. Of course, cow poo works too though.

If you have no access to good poo, wouldnt just straight straw work better then straw mixed with storebought poo? Like in a straw log situation? just a thought

Never heard of that before.
I've seen cubensis around horse stalls before. No cows around.

Okay, I should have said that they usually germinate in the cows stomach. I was just responding to floridaboi101s post claiming that cow dung was better cause he doesn't see shrooms on horse dung in nature.

I dont think I said anything about being better, just easier. A thought on the store bought manure is that alot of it is pre-pasturized before it sets around in parking lots for months creating an environment that breaks the substance down to being compost not dung. I would say if you could get some that was fairly fresh from the supplier it would probably work much better.

Isn't the reason you don't find shrooms growing on horse poo in nature is because of the acid in a horse's stomach? Bovines or cows have five stomachs because they do not use acid to digest their food , they use bacteria. This is also the reason why cows can eat hay which is coarser than straw and horses cannot.

Yes I had the same experience with Black Kow which is allegedly composted manure. It was thick sludgy and just way too heavy. After contacting black kow I was informed that they gather their cow poo from dairies where cows are fed grain. This leads to poo which lacks body and the correct structure for shroomies. What you want is hand picked cow patties which come from the field from cows which eat grass. This poo gives you the perfect structure necessary for growing creepers. At least this is my theory anyway! Anybody else have an opinion. I know that some say poo is poo but I have to disagree.

So far so good with the tex my foaf is doing on store bought steer manure. In a week and a half, it is fully colonized using wbs as the spawn. Will post results later on how the flushes are to compare store bought compost with homemade compost.
