I guess it doesnt matter so much, but there must be some secret to the agar formula or brand or maybe something else, that determines tomentose vs rhizomorphic growth.

I think my oat prep works fine meanwhile. You are probably talking about those contaminated jars in my other thread? I think contam was introduced due to bad G2G tek. Messed up.

But how is this is related to growing mycelium on agar? Are are u saying I should not care how it looks on agar?

It seems to me, that it has not been understood, what determines tomentose vs. Rhizomorphic growth. Was not able to find any convincing answers anywhere. Always the same fuzzy talk, sometimes it's tomentose, sometimes not, it can go back and forth, and it doesnt matter, yet rhizomorphic mycelium leads to stronger growth and more primordia, but also tomentose can fruit well. Do you see how inconsistent the knowledge base is with regard to this question?
Maybe it remains unsolved, but then I would appreciate, if a more experienced guy would just say so.

Is one not wanting rhizo growth for easier isolation of a single strain (if that ultimately is your end game).

I personally don't care as long as the plate is clean. Just curious.

I have transferred to BRF plates as suggested 4 days ago, but it seems it made the situation even worse.










The mycelium does not seem to want to grow on this agar with BRF. It only exhibits this translucent film. Driving me crazy.
I have now tried MEA agar with different concentrations of malt extract (15 - 20 gr/l) with different brands of agar and malt extract and also now BRF agar. Basically I conclude that I am not getting any good growth on either of these recipes. Something else must be wrong. I don't see any contamination, do you?
The spore prints are from a reputable supplier in Europe, who is a sponsor here.

What would you suggest to do next?

That's been my experience and research as well.

Those last plates you show look like bacteria. I just started a different thread with my cultures that seem to be showing the same signs. My Thread

I am really not so convinced yet, if this translucent stuff is really bacteria. Someone once mentioned to me that it is translucent mycelium and this is also what I have observed when making spore swipes on agar plates. It starts with this translucent leading edge and then starts to grow white mycelium. But I admit it could be both, bacteria and mycelium, growing together, since spore prints are not sterile anyway. But I would be happy to get some more views to confirm, if I am really looking at bacteria. I think my SAB tek is not that bad, so I would be surprised to have only contaminated dishes all the time.

I have also ordered ready made dishes with Kimmig agar for mushrooms and will check out, how transfers to some of those change the picture in. Maybe this proves something wrong with my agar mixes.

can you hold the plates up to a light in the back so we can see the spread better?

the top pic looks like the myc is escaping something.

The spread can hardly be seen for now and I couldnt get it photographed well.
This translucent stuff is on most plates perfectly symmetrical arount the center.


Here is a pic with light in the background of the escaping mycelium, but I was not able to photograph it in a way that one can see this fine layer on the photo.

It looks the same as Messiah's

I just thought I would share this...

9/21 to 9/25
6 grams brf.
9 grams telephone agar
500 ml. water




9/21 to 9/25
10 grams telephone agar
500ml. grain water from oats



This is a sample of what most of my grain water plates look like at seven days..
