How long you PC that brf agar? Josex was recommending something like an hour for BRF Agar, but I just don't have time for that shit for agar, honestly.

An hour?  Damn...I Max at 30 mins for BRF agar cuz I’m worried about caramelization!

If I'm not mistaking, You don't have to worry about caramelizing  when using grains.. I think Josex was just making a point that time just doesn't matter..

Damn your plates look great. I have used the same recipe as you have, but with purchased organic BRF. I am getting frustrated with my cultures. They never seem to take off. Almost seems to me like there is some growth inhibitor in my mixture, some fungicide or similar.

Yesterday I have transferred to purchased ready made plates with Kimmig agar for mushrooms. So far there is zero reaction after 24 hours. Looks like the mycelium does nothing. Very strange.

When you grind brwon rice in your Vitamix does it become like fine flour or is it more fine granulates?

A comparison between grain water and brf. Plates.
I just thought I would share this...

9/21 to 9/25
6 grams brf.
9 grams telephone agar
500 ml. water

9/21 to 9/25
10 grams telephone agar
500ml. grain water from oats

This is a sample of what most of my grain water plates look like at seven days..

Are all your samples rhizomorphic or do they become tomentose as well? DO you know, what ensures such nice rizho growth? Agar mixture? Gas exchange through cling wrap or parafilm?

It's a very fine granulates to a powder...
When I mixed It up with water the powder disbursed nicely but I could see small granular particles settled down to the bottom of the container.

The culture I'm using is B+ from a pin on the first ms flush.
The tub had a nice pin set on nine days and was harvesting on thirteen days, so I grabbed a few pins and went to my agar dish. Each dish grew out with contaminated free cultures. The cultures in the pictures are transfer 2 from the pins.

I got to like telephone brand agar powder in the 25 gram sealed packed.
I don't have to worry about using old oxidative agar  that lost It jelling power..
7-25 grams units for ten dollars on ebay..

I can't find telephone agar here, but can use this one now

Was using this before

I cant say I noticed any difference in performance, since I have been and still am dissatisfied with my growth on agar. The only time I had somewhat decent growth was from clone tissue.

Ok, look at this...

To test my agar plates I have now tried to deliberately grow bacteria by coughing on the plates a lot and even swiping my finger with saliva all over the plate. The right plate is BRF agar (6g brf 9g agar 500ml water, as suggested above). The left plate is MEA (15 gr ME, 20 gr agar per l).

Look at the results 3 days later. WTF?
Why are the plates not full of bacteria all over the place? I am seriously confused. If even bacteria can hardly grow on them, mushies may have a hard time too.

Have any of you experienced this? WTF is goin on?

Yeah sure they are growing something, both are, but only in one spot?
I really coughed on those heavily and grabbed them all over the media. Shouldn't they show heavy bacterial growth all over the place?
Have you ever tried that?

I'm a believer that not all contaminate will show on your agar dish right away.
That's why we so easily contaminate our grain jars/bags.

To Your question: No I have never tried to contaminate my dishes. Only when I want to check the integrity of my flow hood..

:frown:

it just seems odd to me, that I am unable to even grow some stupid old mold on my dishes, when I mishandle them, but get moldy dishes when working with mushrooms under a SAB...

I will observe these for a while longer and see what happens...

Well, you already know that you are getting contams on your plates so it would be more beneficial to just focus on improving your technique in any small ways possible than to try to grow molds just to see.... because you already know you're growing molds, so why the need to confirm? Just try to improve

I wanted to rule out that something is wrong with my agar causing the mycelium to stall. You are right, this was only something on the side I was curious about.

I have made new transfers today with attention to technique. Made transfers today, from each plate to 3 plates with different agar mixtures each, BRF, MEA and Kimmig to check, if this leads to any significant difference in performance.
