Mycelium on agar suddenly tomentose or what?

I have done several transfers from dishes that looked like decent rizhomorphic mycelium of various varities and strains, but ended up with lot of dishes, that only display thin, almost translucent mycelium. It's been 8 days now. What's going on here?

Let a more experienced agar user chime in before listening to me but I've seen overly nutritious agar cause more tometose myc but somtimes it's just the genes all my Rusty whytes were pretty tometose but good luck.

Change the nutes would be what I would do. But if that doesn’t help I would start over or go back. No sense trying to get a silk purse from a sows ear.

I used MEA with 15gr ME and 20gr agar.
I will try MEA with different brands of ME and agar now and check if that makes any difference.
What surprises me though is that I transferred from pretty good looling dishes with the same products and recipe used for MEA.

Try something other than MEA. The colony can get lazy eating the same shit all the time. Do some PDA.

I just switched to pda from MEA after a month or so culturing on solely malt. Some of my tomentose cultures went back to rhizo, others didnt. Youll have to get a feel for what varieties like what. It;s easier to get this feel if you keep your amount of varieties being cultured low. I have 4 going right now, after burning my candle at both ends trying to work with 15 different varieties... :facepalm3:

MEA and PDA have different nutritional profiles, and might need different metabolic pathways to process. The one pathway may be down regulated while the other's nutes are available.

Transfer some of your culture to a different type of agar, and your myc may spend a lot of energy growing fast to try find the nutrients it's used to.

Some people also reduce the nutrients in their agar to force rhizo growth.

But honestly, the one isn't any worse than the other. The only real difference imho is that it's easier to see contams in rhizomorphic growth than tomentose growth. Beyond that having the one or the other isn't any real concern.

Senescence is a red herring. You're not going to encounter it doing transfers alone.

It is a likely reason why you don't want to do a clone of a clone.

I understand that one can have perfectly fone fruits with tomentise mycelium but dont we all want to have beautiful agar cultures? Its like when u keep on hooking up with average girls. They work as well, but everybody desires the hot slutty ones😆. We all want those strong rhizomorphic bright white perfectly linear circles in the dish, or else disappointment ensues.
My cultures somehow exhibit some rhizomorphs, but then also usually lots of tomentose growth. I have already reduced ME amount from 20 to 15gr/l but this had no impact.
I will simply us different brands of agar and ME to check if it changes anything.
Will also compare with PDA.
If these dont work I guess I have to start over with spores.🤔

ive had mixed results from malt agars. i honestly like brf agar the best. at 1.3% it always performs gud.

I like it because like most noobs I bought a huge fucking bag of the stuff a few years back.

No way I'll use it making pf cakes so I use it for agar.

I really like 6g brf 9g telefone agar 500ml water.

Alright folks,
here are the transfers from some of the above dishes to new dishes with MEA made with 2 different brands of agar and ME. Same recipe 7,5 gr ME and 10 gr agar per l.
TO my eye they look better now, but some still remain tomentose, almost puffy in the center and have developed a larger translucent ring around it, kind of a translucent leading edge, which is large for some and barely noticeable for others.
But overall few dishes look promising.
What do you think?

I could not yet try BRF agar, will do it next and share results.

I'm kinda surprised no one mentioned that there's no real need to get rhizo growth? I mean, we're going to grow this out on something else (like oats, wheat, birdseed, etc) so who cares what it looks like on a plate as long as you're getting healthy and uniform growth?

Yeah I was trying to make the point in another similar thread that I didn't think we were still supposed to care about rhizo growth anymore :shrug:

Maybe people desire it more because it looks prettier
