Over a month, 4 ounce jar has no outside signs of colonization
    #26197307 -

Hey all. This is my third batch of BRF jars. My other two all had bacteria (I never allowed gas exchange). Many made it to 95% and then started to pin :/ I used smaller 4 ounce jars this time and knocked with B+. They have micropore tape and were PCd for 2 hours. I knocked them about three hours after taking them out of pressure cooker. I used one Innoc point in the middle. I like that the middle gets colonized first.

However, as they seek to be getting heavier, it has been almost a month and a half and they have shown no growth that I can see. Not even on the bottom. I keep a space heater near them and they never seem to get that warm. The jar is always coldish (my family keeps the house cool).

Patience is a virtue but damn! These sonbitches taking their sweet time. Anything i could improve on? Here is a picture for reference.

If they havent grown much in that long then they stalled .. usually MYC will keep growing if it was just the spores then I'd say they didnt germinate ..

If its colder then like 60 degrees then that would cause it to slow down but its gotta be pretty cold

Could have made the sub too wet ? I mean there's alot of reasons it could have stalled .. 3 hours after the PC probably wouldnt have been cool enough but I'm not sure on those small jars did you take them out and cool or straight from the PC?

Questions I’d wonder about:
Where’d you get your syringe (known good vendor?)
How old is the syringe?
How was your field capacity?
Whose PF TEK method did you use? (I recommend This one
Did you do inoculation in a SAB or open air?

Inoculating from the middle of the jar is fine, but I’ve found that i won’t see mycelium growing as quickly as with the 4 injection sites method.

Month and a half is a while.  I’d be thinking: bad/old syringe, poor sterile technique, or over/under field capacity medium.  2 hour PC is excessive and may have contributed to the problems too.

If your home is anywhere from 60-80 degrees F, no need for a heater.

My guess is that it was still too hot, killed the spores.

From the most popular PF Tek Guide:
Quote:
4. After your pressure cooker cycle has finished turn off your burner and allow to cool for at least 8 hours or just let it sit overnight.

Other possibilities:
  • Unfamiliar with mic tape, but these need gas exchange, so that may have blocked too much. Also, I only see one hole, so may not be getting enough/any GE.
  • Your hole is in the center... that's the furthest point from where you'd be able to see your mycelium, so it is totally possible that there's some minor growth that hasn't spread out enough.
  • As above, possible technique flaws.
  • As above, possible bad syringe.

My guess is that it was too hot. But they still feel like they’re getting heavier? I see no water droplet. I’m still getting my ducks in a row.

Yeah... That was my guess too :frown: It’s okay, I have more chances

My spores are from a very reputable sponsor on her. I’ve had them for about two months.
I did one hole for my other larger jars and they did great besides the bacteria (I had put masking tape on the hole!! Lots of solution and extra water too.)

So, you're using a dry verm layer on top right? That alone is your filter for contaminants. The tape is just... ummm... extra? Also, masking tape is totally breathable, but I still don't know about mic tape

And, if the spores are from a reputable vendor then that narrows the possibilities of where the problem is! I would recommend letting it cool longer. This happens, we all learn some how.

Good luck!

yes, very reputable and I had the two other grows from them work out fine besides the bacteria (I had the masking tape over the holes for a while and used too much spore solution)

How old is the syringe?

2 months

How was your field capacity?

Great, no extra droplets of water, used the given ratio
Whose PF TEK method did you use? (I recommend This one

BRF tek, Bods Cheap Easy AF tek

Did you do inoculation in a SAB or open air?

Open air, that’s how I did the other two (none had mold)

Inoculating from the middle of the jar is fine, but I’ve found that i won’t see mycelium growing as quickly as with the 4 injection sites method.

Yes of course! I might take the tape off then. They could just be taking their time, but all signs point to not letting them cool enough. They felt cool to the touch when knocked them, but maybe the inside wasn’t cool enough. I have an extra syringe, so I could always use that. Thank you for taking the time to respond!

Oh! Next question, how much liquid did you use?! I hope it was only like a drop or two. Also, make sure you shake the FUCK out of your syringe.

You got this

I used about 1 cc between all four jars. The first/second batch was 6 jars total and I used a shit ton of solution for those. I still have about 2-3 ccs left.

Micropore tape.  I was given this advice when I was doing PF TEK as picking up and examining the jars results in the verm layer moving around.  Another layer of protection or totally unnecessary?  I had 12/12 jars birth when I used it last so felt it was a reasonable approach

I... wow. Reading comprehension fail from me. Shit.

Micropore tape... meh. I completely stopped using it after looking at it in a microscope. It's basically about as good as draping toilet paper over it (scroll down on the link). I'm not going to say it's worthless completely, but I don't feel like it's doing enough, so I don't use it any more.

Amazing info, Shaper.  Thank you for sharing!  Another one of those “it makes me feel better even if it doesn’t actually do anything” things.  Appreciate the info very much!

Would it be okay to replace the tops, do two outer innoc  points, and Pressure cook again? They don’t smell at all and have no signs of growth. This time i’ll wait overnight.

Ps, thank you for the pointers!!

I wouldn’t.

I’d just start over - new BRF/verm mix, new holes in the lids, PC, then wait (overnight) to cool and innoc the next day.  Cutting corners will likely lead to more problems.

Fair enough... Time to try again!! The mushies don’t make it easy for those looking to cut corners, that’s for sure. Thanks for your help C. Youre awesome!!

More than happy to help!  I remember those PF-TEK days.  My first attempt was a near failure but I learned a lot (mostly what not to do!).

Once you get your 2nd round going let us know and post pics.  We’d love to follow along and the best feeling is seeing others succeed!
