Bottom of Jars not colonizing
    #618119 - 04/25/02 06:16 AM (21 years, 11 months ago)

Hey folks. I have always had a problem with jars fully colonizing. The bottom of the jars don't appear to colonize. I find that out of a batch of six jars, 2 will always end up not colonizing the bottom. I don't use an incubator and don't regulate temp. I merely innoculate my jars, tape the lids, and throw them anywhere I have out of sight for colonization. Is this lack of incubation (humidity and heat) leading to my colonizing problems? Or is my Oxygen levels falling well short of the required needs of the mycelium. Perhaps the lower then desired temps cause slow colonization and all the oxygen gets burnt up. Any suggestions and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Before you flip them over on their lids, give them a good shaking. If nothing works, just cut off the uncolonized part of the cake before birthing or casing.
