Help: top of jar colonizing sloow
    #386873 - 09/06/01 07:10 AM (22 years, 25 days ago)

My pet monkeys jars of Lipa Yai were growing very quickly, the bottom and sides colonized in a real hurry. However, the top 1/4" of the substrate seems to be colonizing very slowly. I'm not quite sure they'll finish, it hasn't quite been 3 weeks since innoculation. Two notes:

1) Could it be that the cakes are a little dry up there? He used the ramsey seal with no tape on the lids, and a heating pad on top od the jars (with some magazines to cool it off a little) that kept the lids of the jars about 83 degrees. I suppose it's possible the cakes dried out a little up there. On the other hand, 5 of his jars injected with Equador honey water colonized the tops with no problem, although it's been a little OVER 3 weeks for them and he doesn't recall them having problems colonizing the tops. IF they did dry out up there, could he inject a little bit of boiled water with a syringe to help it along?

2) He removed the heating pad about 5 days ago to heat his terrarium. So is it possible they're just growing slow in the cooler temperatures (arond 70 or so) than they were when they were heated?

Please help, he gets agitated quickly and I don't want a pissed off monkey runninng around. Any suggestions would be very appreciated

Grover

Yes, stalled jars are usually caused by dry substrate. You can try injecting 5mls of water and inverting the jars.

It must have been the heat. The monkey birthed 5 jars this morning, each had some bluing on the top and a few small flecks of uncolonized verm. The verm underneath and to the sides of said flecks were colonized, so he's not too worried they'll get contamninated. Hopefully the terrarium will provide some moisture and the cakes will be off and running.

With condensation running down the sides of the terrarium and a little on the lid, that means it's humid enough right? There's a heating pad underneath the terrarium, with plenty of water for the perlite, so that would force more moisture into the air, right?

Thanks
Grover

Dry heat will do it every time. You've got plenty of humidity. The heating pad really isn't needed.
