Time for jar colonization
    #360802 -

What is a maximum time I should allow? It has been 3 weeks and there is some, but very little, colonization going on. Some jars just on top, other a little on the side, too, but not more than 15% of the jar surface.

Just this week I upped the temp to 85 degrees via sitting them in a plastic dishpan of water and an aquarium heater. They were at 70-75 before.

At this rate it seems like it will take another month or two for them to be 100% colonized. Should I abort, or take out the colonized parts and case them? What is the max time I should allow first? Forgive the ignorance of a first-timer.

FOr the record, 5 jars have organic white rice flour, verm, and water and the other half have rye flour, verm, and water. I put spored directly from a spore print into each.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Abenheimer

If you haven't yet, take the tape off the inoculation holes and invert your jars. If you don't see new growth within a week, it might be time to case.

I scraped from a spore print instead of injecting, so I have no holes. Is there another option?

They're short of one of two things or both, air and/or water. It sounds as if they may be suffocating. Have you made any provisions for air exchange? If not, at least loosen the lids. And/or, you can punch some holes with a nail.

If you scraped the spores into the jars from a spore print, there's a good chance the spores were dehydrated. Take puscle's suggestion and poke some holes in the lid for air. If you don't see much growth over the next week to 10 days, you should just pop the cakes out and case them.

Thanks for the suggestions- I'll try poking some holes in them. I'll post the results .
