How do you define a foodie? And are you one? * 2
    #26196193 -

I think a foodie is someone who is open to trying just about anything (within some level of reason), and is someone who seeks out dining gems in their local area or wherever they travel to. As the saying goes, those that live to eat as opposed to eating to live.

I feel like I am -- I'm borderline obsessed with food (and no I'm not obese lol I probably go a buck-fifty soaking wet), I love watching shows about food, like Chef's Table on Netflix, all of Anthony Bourdain's stuff (RIP).

I do a lot of research on local restaurants that have special reputations and auras around them (gonna sound like a food snob here but I tend to avoid chain establishments most of the time). From hole in the wall hidden gems to fine dining, if the reputation around a place is special enough I'll put it on my list to get there for a try.

But notice I said I avoid chain establishments most of the time -- keyword being most, as I certainly don't all the time. I do have my guilty pleasures at the occasional fast food joint, and got no problem with indulging myself in some cheap "trash" food at the grocery store from time to time (as I mentioned in an earlier thread from this week one of my favorite guilty pleasures is eating a .99 cent Totino's pizza after a drunken night ).

Anyway, do you consider yourself a foodie? And if so how wide is your food spectrum?

No, it's basically being a custi (costumer) but I'd say a lot of America is and fat/poor because of it.

I would say I am a foodie. After 34 years working in bars and restaurants I developed a foodie mindset. If the chain restaurants would follow protocol some of them would be really good. The best time to go to a chain is when they are about 3 months open. There is a great thai place right off Oak Lawn, "PakPao", excellent tom ka and pad thai. "Marios" tex mex, salvadorian, papusas etc...on Lemmon ave is excellent as well. I'm going to try and hit both while I'm there.

I think you're confusing being a constant consuming American who spends all his/her time in drive-thru lines and stuffing their face with junk food with being a foodie

It's not the same thing

I'm talking about people who go out seeking new cuisines/dishes from different cultures because they enjoy exploring new tastes

I think you're thinking of these people

eating a lot of calories doesn't make you a foodie

I've tried a lot of different cuisines but Salvadorian isn't one of them. Would love too, though. How did you like it, rex?

Pupusas blew me away. Basically it seems to be a softer version of a tamale, I would go to Marios to get them the 1st time, so good there, all the food there is 5/5.

looks like pakpao went down hill since I left 5 years ago, marios is still looking good though. I'm open for suggestions, we'll be at a downtown hotel.

I just heard about this place -- it's a different place than that Vietnamese joint I told you about.

https://www.dallasnews.com/food/2019/09/17/khao-noodle-shop-is-bon-appetit-s-no-2-best-new-restaurant-in-america/

Khao Noodle in East Dallas. It's Laotian. It got the #2 best new restaurant...in America per Bon Appetit magazine. Man that's ridiculously high praise.

definitely going to have to add this to the Dallas list

Pat I know you're in Canada, but don't know where. You anywhere by the coasts? I always hear that the seafood off the coasts of Canada are among the cleanest and just overall best fresh seafood on earth.

Anthony Bourdain did an episode in Newfoundland & Nova Scotia and they were virtually swimming in an embarrassment of riches when it came to pristine seafood. Mouth was watering just watching.

Dude!!! I haven't got a chance to go there yet, but my barber raves about it. He's on the same street. He says him and his uncle will close up the shop, throw back a few beers and then cruise down the street there and go eat oysters, shrimp and gumbo. They love it.

It isn't the most culinary varied city, but it has it's treasures.

And yes, the Atlantic provinces have by fr the best seafood I ever tasted.

Foodies? You guys are doing it wrong...

THESE are foodies.

They're just pretenders.

Why go all the way to dress up as a pizza?  It's a wannabe move.

Wanna look like foodie?  Eat like a pig at a new restaurant.
