What's your definition of a hippie? People use the term a lot on here, many times in a derisive way.

It's no different than nigger, jew, spic, gook, thug, hipster, punk, etc... It's how it's applied by the person using it, it's meaningless unless you know who you are talking to or can respond to a new voice.

You can't be a hippie if you don't do psychedelic drugs; just like you can't be a yogi if you don't do yoga.

Unless you're approaching retirement age, you're probably not a hippie. No matter what you may think.

... We still got a few hippies in Woodstock NY, and yes, they are approaching that age, or in fact, retired...

Hippie, in the way it's meant when people use the word: In the '60's- Some one who most likely protested the Vietnam War, took LSD and went to Woodstock. Modern versions- a kid in high school who listens to the grateful dead, does not smoke weed or do drugs, and uses 'being a hippie' as an excuse to not bathe and act liberal. Neo-hippies. OR Does a ton of drugs and doesn't give a shit about politics as much as neo-hippies but usually has an enlightened attitude as a result of the drugs. Not usually a self-proclaimed hippie, but called that by others because everything has to be labeled. Is the more acceptable form.
Anway, I loosely respect old hippie ideals and people like Timothy Leary, because of the open mindedness supported by the lifestyle. But I, being part of a later generation, believe in creating my own identity and not following a dead movement. They set a good example, socially, by questioning authority and not being restrained by societies standards, but most of the followers of that movement were just going with the crowd and eventually grew out of it into the disco scene. Back in the 60's they were creating their own lifestyle, it was new. Anyone who tries to replicate it is an idiot. A big part of the whole movement was being unique, and copying something that's supposed to be unique defies what you're trying to copy. And in the end you're just an idiot. Acting like a hippie now is a lot like boasting that you're a non-conformist. I can't take these kids seriously. I think were due for a movement among youth, this current pop culture has to die. If it continues we're fucked.
