If it gets too low your culture may freeze to death like mine did.

Also temp fluctuations can cause pooling of water which can wick contams

I keep my plates at room temp for over 6 months with no problems. Might want to stack them in an insulated lunch box or something though.

So, I'm super new to hobby.  As well as agar. 
First batch of plates i poured were    brf agar,  that were super thick and with sediment.  Also the culture i started appeared to be super bacterial, so I'm trying to clean it up and save it after a few failed attempted shoeboxes.





The second attempt at agar was with  medium maltose  extract, and i this time the plates were poured too thin.  Use  lc(?)  or a spore syringe (unknown culture)  resulted in an amazing imagery. 




I'm learning.  Also for anyone starting -  grab more plates than you think you will need!

I don't really have access to any varieties so I'm trying to work with what i have.  Wish me luck!


I picked the best plates from the first attempt and transferred those.
Tomorrow I'll get more plates and will transfer the second plate in that picture.  I wanted to share it, because it was super pretty. 


PS: (1) when do you add food coloring, before you PC the agar, or after?  I suspect before.  (2) Is it safe to add after?

I hope this is the right place to do this?
Can anyone else see this fuzz on top of this culture? It’s plain old cubensis. It’s growing at the same rate as the mycelium, not ringing out like cobweb. The culture looked fine, until it got a little bigger, and then I noticed this. A couple of my cultures have it and it looks totally disorganized, but this b+ clone looks like it literally just started leaving the agar, or never started there, just grew on top of itself. Idk, let me know if u can even see it. These plates are poured really thin and could very well be nutrient deficient. My recipe was 10g DME, 25g Agar, 700ml water.

Follow up from the badly bacterial culture, i took my best 6 plates, and transferred. Some of them are going very slow.  But one of them 3 days later is now dime sized.

Though, about 2 weeks ago i had no clue about any of this.

1. Is it actually clean?  I don't see the similar structure that other people have in their plate cultures. This seems to be one continuous blob.
2. The other dots I'm seeing appear to be sediment, though I'm now sure why it is covering only a portion of the plate.  Any thoughts?  They haven't grown like other bacterial cultures I've seen.  Medium Barley Malt Extract + Agar. I think it was 20g/L i should have kept better notes.
3. Should i wait a little longer, or should i transfer?
4. Which portion?    12-1, 2-3 what seems to look good to me.
5. How do you all take nice pictures?  Light box?

The medium is 2% / 2% MEA agar and is incubating at 24C.

The transferred wedge itself is growing but it just doesn't want to colonise the new plate.

Did you place the wedge on the new dish upside down?

I'm no expert  [i just started a few weeks ago!] , and condensation makes it look a little hard, but it looks a little bacterial.

Hard to tell for sure, but I would say you're good based on the time frame....do you have any pic updates?

Started experimenting with blended oatmeal + yeast extract agar. Results are encouraging, but it seems more prone to mold infections and it's not transparent.

Results of experiment, comparing 3% oatmeal + YE to 3% MEYA:
* P. Cubensis Golden Teacher clone - 42mm vs 33mm diameter in the same time.
* Reishi - 31mm vs 24mm.
* Pleurotus ostreatus - no visible difference, didn't bother to measure.

I will do more tests with other species and more dishes.
