I hope it fully digests. It would suck to have it "make contact" on the way out! I can't even imaging having poison ivy there!

I've been doing it for a few days and no problems yet, but man that would suck

Oh shit! Uhm, no pun intended! I don't think it would survive the stomach acid though.

My grandmother almost died burning poison ivy though. She inhaled the smoke from the burn pile and got poison ivy in her lungs. Very bad news!

Actually it's been practiced safely by many people and written about in other places. Starting very small and gradually increasing the dose to build tolerance makes sense. Sorry to hear about your troubles

Yeah I hung out around a fire when I was a lot younger when some folks were burning the shit and I didn't know it. Thankfully I didn't inhale enough to have respiratory problems but I had some solid rashes, not even bumps just pure thick patches of poison ivy it was wicked

as a crew, we have to be very careful to remove P.O. from brush, especially when working near roadways.

however, burning PO out in the open, especially just a few sprigs here and there, is NOT going to hurt someone unless they are intentionally breathing in the smoke right next to the fire.

on side jobs, i burn PO all the time, cause it doesn't affect me unless i have days of exposure to the smoke.  burning it in a wood-stove and opening the door (or closing after just placing a log in) is how most people get hit with it via the smoke.

as always, individual sensitivity levels ultimately dictate the degree of response.

now the real lovely things about urushiol is the orgasmic "pain" that comes from exposing the PO "wound" to HOT HOT water.  i do it intentionally when i get it real bad (even though it prolongs the sores a few days) because of how amazing it feels.  i've fallen to my knees shaking (almost equivalent to an orgasm, except i can feel the delight ALL throughout my body, inside and out); it's bliss.

FYI, do NOT expose a fresh urushiol wound to warm water, as it allows the oil to soak in.  cold water and soap is the way to remove the oil from skin.  the sooner you can get to cold water, the less effect the urushiol will have.

My wife is so allergic, that just touching a mango will get her to break out... I've wondered if you could use this method to build an immunity to it, but I am leery. People do it with peanuts and have success, so who knows.
My main concern for ingesting it would be your GI tract getting fed up with a constant irritant and triggering an anaphylactic response... if that happens you might be a dead leaf eater if you dont have an epi-pen.

I have wondered if you could gather alot of it, then dry it and grind into a powder. This would give you a consistent stock to dose from (much like we all know how to do:mushroom2:). Then take a very small amount like .001 grams per liter of water or carrier oil and apply it to the skin... then keep increasing the concentration until you find the threshold (unfortunately you would have to at least once, induce a reaction). once the threshold is found, reduce the concentration and guesstimate a protocol. On a decided date try the threshold dose again. Document it all, if found to have a positive affect. Then graph dates, dosage, and the new threshold levels. With that info you could theorize the optimal protocol I.E. apply daily and double dosage monthly or what have you.

To spare my wife, I wanted to get some bald mice, lather them up, and get them right itchy but that demon oil looks to only have taste for human skinbags. I asked my wife to be my cute little test rat...I kinda got the vibe that she'd rather eat a dog turd.

either why keep us in the loop with your trial. good luck!

Huh, I'm finding this all pretty interesting. Especially the obstinacy due to lack of research. In 1940 there was a clinical test done for treating extreme poison ivy allergies. The link is below. It's a long read. I did read it all and the methods are well described. I'll sum up for you though. He used an extract diluted in corn oil in gel capsules. There are different dosing schedules described and over various periods of time. He also tried muscular injection. Like a vaccine. That didn't work. The oral therapy did. The number of people treated is too small to be definitive in my opinion, but he trusted it enough to treat both his sons.

Here's a quote from the conclusion "Some forty selected ivy-sensitive persons have, to date, been treated by either shock or prolonged fractional oral therapy. Reduction in skin sensitivity, as shown by quantitative patch test,s, has occurred in all volunteers thus treated."

https://www.jacionline.org/article/S0021-8707(41)80009-4/pdf

Personally, I wouldn't follow his methods as many doses caused poison ivy on the ass and some other really crazy stuff at higher doses. The low dose method didn't have many side effects

Now that I've gotten interested in this subject more because, as I said, my girlfriend has severe reactions, I've found other studies that back up oral treatment. Here's another one:

https://www.jacionline.org/article/0021-8707(59)90082-6/pdf

And some quotes...

"The bencficial therapeutic effects of oral ivy dates back to the report of Dakin2 in 1829. Warren3 produced immunity by administering the extract orally in 1909. Schamberg4 was the first to popularize the ingestion of the ivy resin which he dissolved in alcohol. Shelmire” employed t,hc ivy resin in diluted corn oil and gave it by mouth in daily doses. There have been many reports6+’ since then on the efficacy of oral ivy therapy."

"The results tend to show that Aqua Ivy Tablets offer immunity against.
poison ivy dermatitis.. This conclusion appears warranted on the basis of
the double-blind, controlled study which gave statistically significant results, as well as the clinical study in which 88 per cent of men with a past history of poison ivy dermatitis, under conditions of heavy exposure, had no dermatitis at all."

Poison shouldn't develop immunity. Urishol is a poison not an allergen. You don't develop immunity to cyanide or deadly mushrooms. Older skin might just be less reactive to it

keep arguing with the wealth of evidence out there.  proof is proof.  it's not about building immunity.  it's about building RESISTANCE.

That's not true Bod. on many levels. You can develop an immunity, as I did, after sever exposure. It's also not a poison, but many, many animals develop resistance to poisons. Not only can people develop resistance to poison but it even has a name. The practice is called Mithridatism and was very common in the past in rulers who feared assassination from poison.
